Maybe I was misled by XorgLog.txt because "FBDEV" is actually the correct driver to try if /dev/dri/card0 is missing (as it is when the Nvidia kernel driver is loaded). So this might just be the *absence* of a valid config file telling Xorg to load the nvidia driver. Try using the 'nvidia-xconfig'
