[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2013-02-16 Thread Michael Mess
I didn't experience the xorg crash for some time again. So that seems to
be fixed for me.

But I am still getting

[31161.506308] NVRM: os_pci_init_handle: invalid context!
[31161.506313] NVRM: os_pci_init_handle: invalid context!

[33531.507662] NVRM: os_pci_init_handle: invalid context!

in the dmesg log and the system sometimes freezes for some seconds or
behaves strange.

This often happens when playing video with the flash plugin.
It may happen more likey when opening more browser tabs and playing video.

So there is still another bug open:

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2013-01-23 Thread Hein
Not fixed for me. Crash happens every 2 to 3 hours, especially when
opening new windows and/or new programms. Is really annoying. Nouveau
drivers are useless: they crash to: make artefacts on my screen. Using
all different versions of Nvidia driver didn't solve this problem.
System is very unstable.

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-11-19 Thread Florent Delayen
Hi everyone !

On Quantal I still have the bug with 304.51, but experimental 310.14
seems to be okay for the moment !

Testing is simple for me, scrolling this web page make 304.51 crashes
every time, but for the moment 310.14 resists :)

Most of the time nouveau opensource driver is more efficient and less-
buggy, I recommend it until you need something not provided (DisplayPort
does not work well for example).

Hope it helps...

Any idea on what is this?

I saw previous weeks that this EQ size goes from 512 then 1024 then..
.etc.. 2^n ... and this is avoiding the total freeze... I had
yesterday.. So I'm completely lost. Is my problem related to this
thread's bug? Another one I couldn't find? Did nvidia solve this
thread's bug or not? What about mine???

Lost!! :)
Cheers,

304.51 is the least crashy version for me. It was really easy to
reproduce the crash with both 304.43 and 304.48, but on 304.51 it only

See attached Xorg log for details.

I can provide files, or trace activity or whatever you need to find and
correct the bug; just ask me !

Strange thing, the driver just before seemed to work well, about [mi]
EQ overflow continuing. it was somehow adaptive or something like
that, then, it was freezing for a second, and then, continue.

With the 304.51 I don't see this behaviour anymore, and then X goes 100%
and freezes.

(its all about X freezing, not crashing or such).

Cheers,

@Omer - Hi, Can you explain for the noob please?

Re: enable the precise-proposed repository from software sources.

How to do this from the command line please? (lightdm, gnome and unity

Also is it possible to do this only for updates to do with the graphics. I
need the rest of the system to use a stable repo.
Thanks.

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-10-02 Thread Omer Akram
Hello everyone.

We have nvidia 304.43 driver in the precise proposed repository which
fixes this issue. All you need to do is disable any third party drivers
ppa (preferably ppa-purge) then enable the precise-proposed repository
from software sources. then sudo apt-get update and after that you just
need to go to 'Additional drivers' and select nvidia graphics drivers
update and just install.

Update: finally have a usable desktop with the 304.51 driver. its been
about 2 full weeks running great with no hiccups after installing
software or updates via the ubuntu software center or update manager.
only thing ive noticed is that the random log outs return if i use my
laptop on battery. this isnt such a big deal as my laptop is almost 2
years old and only lasts a little over an hour on battery anyway so when
im doing serious work my laptop is always plugged in. but again when
plugged in it works flawlessly!

And the ones from the time of crash related in previous Xlog posted:

Im not that much into kernel, but I guess this is useless, looks like
the kernel found GPUs on the motherboard, right?

Anything more? Add some trace mode?

I have one crash per day, it's easy for me :)

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-09-11 Thread Rocko
Yes, you're right, those NVRM messages are fine - they just say that the
driver found a couple of nvidia GPUs. I was wondering if you were
getting Xid errors or the 'attempted to yield the CPU in atomic mode'
mentioned earlier in the thread. Your issue might still be an nvidia
problem - if the nvidia module locks up the kernel it can stop any
further logging - but it might be a separate issue with X or unity. If
you can do so, you could try removing one of the GPUs - I vaguely recall
seeing other bugs related to running two nvidia cards.

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-09-07 Thread Jean-Paul Argudo
Ubuntu Precise 64, (Kubuntu to be precise)

nvidia driver version 304.43-0ubuntu1~precise~xup1

Two 560 ti in SLI (3 displays)

It happens quite randomly, but at least once a day.

I attach today's xlog error.

I may add I have severe issues with flashplayer too for some time, quite
the same has those X crashes (lets say 2 months now)

1/Videos tainted in blue

Corrected thanks to this special config:

$ cat /etc/adobe/mms.cfg
EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=1
OverrideGPUValidation=true

2/ Overlays : I could see a youtube video playing like in the xroot, on
any one of the virtual desktop, or even some text above the video, for
example libreoffice's one...

Corrected thanks to this:

 $ grep VDPAU /usr/bin/firefox
VDPAU_NVIDIA_NO_OVERLAY=1
export VDPAU_NVIDIA_NO_OVERLAY

(put that in the file at the beggining for example, or make this config
system-wide (useless in my case, one user, one browser ... ))

I can provide lot more information if asked. PLease ring my bell.

Cheers,

This is definitely related to Xorg. I have crashes left and right,
regardless whether I am using nvidia-current or nouveau. Nouveau crashes
less, but its always a sefault in Xorg it seems.

The most stable workaround for me is to run Classic Gnome, and even
there, certain apps trigger a crash (Thunderbird, Firefox, Online

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-26 Thread safetytrick
This bug is specifically for XOrg crashes caused by the NVidia driver. X
can crash for other reasons but that is not this bug. Random logouts are
also not this bug unless caused by the NVidia driver causing X to crash.
You'll likely want to open a new bug.

Message about video card falling off the bus in dmesg did go away.
Changed to unity-2d, problems of graphics locking up presisted.
Turned off OpenGL in desktop effects problem went away.
Note: playing OpenGL games still result in graphics locking up,

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-24 Thread Rainer Rohde
Even with the latest Xorg from xorg edgers PPA and the lateste nvidia
driver, Unity on 12.10 immediately crashes with a segmentation fault.

The sad part is that now they removed Unity 2D and I am also unable to
install Classic Gnome, so there is NO fallback. I am trying to work with
nouveau now, and oh boy is that experience unstable. Unity just stops
working on a regular basis.

When I bought this new laptop which only has a dedicated Nvidia card, I
thought I would be stepping up from my Dell which had an Intel and
Nvidia card. That Intel card worked flawlessly with Unity in 12.10 alpha
3, and even the discrete Nvidia card worked like a charm with Bumblebee.

Needless to say, this is extremely annoying.

Oh, and what is with the dependency of nvidia-current on xorg abi 10,
11, and 12?

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-24 Thread Hector
not true. even with the latest driver installed, downloading a simple
program from the ubuntu software center started causing the random log
outs again. thanks to a suggestion from @Romuald C. i used the .run file
provided by nvidia to reinstall the driver instead of using a deb
package. now my machine seems to be running fine, but then again it was
running just fine when i first installed the new drivers as well before
the log outs started happening again.

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-22 Thread oleoleole
Well I see a bunch of people have this problem as well, I run KDE (with
effects) and it logs me out from time to time. Mainly just running Opera
and irssi. Suspect it must be some flash via Opera than which cause the
logoff.

Running Kubuntu 12.04, nVidia 295.40, and KDE 4.9

I had 240GTS card which I sent back to the store because I thought it
was a hardware fail, that said, it still may be because of heavier
hangups. Now I am using the backup card which is 8500GT, and here I
never have hard hangups, but logs me out.

I hope I don't get my 240GTS back now because of faulty drivers, that
will be waste of cash.

2012-08-22 Thread Rainer Rohde
I tried something different to generate more meaningful output.

-- Logged in from the command-line and ran startx. The session started
just fine, however there was no Gnome Panel loaded whatsoever.

-- Pressed F12 to launch Guake terminal and typed unity --replace
and hit enter. This dropped me immediately to the shell and I observed
an error message regarding a segmentation fault pertaining to the
nvidia-current driver (please see screen photos attached).

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-20 Thread ragtag
I see that there is a new Nvidia driver that apparently fixes this
problem. Can we pretty please get this update in the official Precise
Pangolin repos. This is a critical issue for the users with the
affected hardware, effectively making the OS more or less useless for
them.

I know you can install the driver manually, but would much rather have a
working driver in the repos.

finally get rid of my 11.10 install when after installing synergy to my

immediately opened up chrome and sure enough within two minutes log outs
started happening. hell I was in a terminal doing a simple apt-get

Re: [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-20 Thread Romuald C.
@Hector, did you update Xorg after installing the driver? It might have
replaced some libraries that the nVidia driver relies on. Try a sanity
check with the .sh driver package and the --sanity flag. It might fix
things for you.

Fresh install of 12.04 64bit with 304.37 driver was working fine for
about 2 days but now log outs started happening again. was preparing to
finally get rid of my 11.10 install when after installing synergy to my
12.04 box the log outs started again. I quickly removed synergy and
immediately opened up chrome and sure enough within two minutes log outs
started happening. hell I was in a terminal doing a simple apt-get
update upgrade and got logged out while doing that (chrome closed and
all). I'm not even using bleeding edge hardware here nor ancient
technology which makes this bug all the more annoying. using nvidia
 g220m...back to 11.10 =[

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-15 Thread Rolo
I've been using the workaround of running in 2d mode since I first
encountered the random log off bug when 12.04 first came out (I subbed
to this bug 2012-06-08 13:23:32). Since then, even with heavy daily use
(8 hours+) I haven't had a single random logout... until today, just
now. I presume something to do with some of today's updates.

As I said, this has been working fine for me, so I hadn't tried any of
the driver fixes, but I thought it worth mentioning this. I'll try the
driver upgrade now.

2012-08-15 Thread ConEG
I'm being cautiously optimistic but i do believe the latest driver
(304.37) has fixed the issues i was having. I had been using the Nouveau
Driver until i saw about the newest driver and got excited. I manually
installed it earlier on today. My computer (Ubuntu 12.04) has been
running for a few hours and i've been pushing it with tasks that were
previously sending me to the log in screen. So far i have not been able
to get it to crash.

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-15 Thread AG Restringere
The problem isn't the drivers it's the Xorg install script that
overwrites and alters files that the Nvidia Binary driver relies on and
then this crashes the X server. The file in question is
'/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so', the X Org files need to be
Vendor aware and not overwrite these types of files if Nvidia is
detected...

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-15 Thread Tye
@ag-restringere,
you aren't supposed to install the drivers from the .run while X is running. if
you took the time to read the README, you would have seen this:

Before you Begin

Before you begin the installation, exit the X server and terminate all OpenGL
applications (note that it is possible that some OpenGL applications persist
even after the X server has stopped). You should also set the default run level
on your system such that it will boot to a VGA console, and not directly to X.
Doing so will make it easier to recover if there is a problem during the
installation process. See Appendix J, Tips for New Linux Users for details.

2012-08-15 Thread AG Restringere
@Tye, I understand you sudo service lightdm stop and inspect the
pstree for any GL processes...What I'm saying is that the following
Package 'X Org Core Server 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.7' writes over a file like
'/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so' that the Nvidia Driver
Package relies on and that the X Org Core Server package installer
script needs to be careful not to mess with files like that...

Hi again,

I'm happy to report that the crashes (see #212 above) disappeared for me
when I installed the 304.37 binary driver (Linux 64-bit) that was
released yesterday.

I had to purge all previously installed driver packages and run the
Nvidia installer twice (to disable Noveau), but now it's rock solid.

I think we finally have this solved! I installed Nvidia driver 304.37 using
this: http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu not wanting to take a
chance on a manual install with my kernel upgrade. (3.4) Kudos to the Nvidia
team for staying with this.
I spent maybe 1 1/2 hours watching Youtube videos-mostly from the Slingshot
Channel which I enjoy greatly and are available in full (1080) HD. No
logouts-no problems so far. Details @ post #60.

@tye3ow: In that case, you are probably experiencing a different issue,
as we have identified a specific problem that was introduced between the

The next 304 release (the fix is not in 304.32) will contain a fix for
the above described problem. This driver should be released very soon.

If you continue to experience problems after upgrading to the next 304
release when it's available, please file a separate bug instead of

my mistake, I saw some reports of the same problem in the comments of this bug

I just tried 304.37 and it doesn't fix X crashing for me. My test case
is running a game using bumblebee until the GPU has fallen off the bus
problem occurs. With 304.37, I didn't get the GPU has fallen off the
bus error in the log, but video output froze and when I tried to
terminate the process, X hung completely. I was able to ssh into the
machine but could not restart lightdm, presumably because the bumblebee
Xorg process would not terminate.

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-13 Thread AG Restringere
Have an interesting update on this problem:

When I run Google Chrome and go to 'chrome://gpu-interals' the X Server
would crash and this didn't seem to be dependent on the Xorg Core Server
version. I installed my Nvidia divers directly from the Nvidia
binaries. The Nvidia*304.32.sh.run drivers have the ability to do a
sanity check run by the following...just go to TTY1...

'sudo lightdm service stop'
'NVIDIA*304.32.sh.run --sanity

Apparently the Xorg Core Server upgrade alters a single Xorg file and
this corrupts the Nvidia installation and the Nvidia installer will
recommend a reinstallation of the drivers. Unfortunately I will have
run the whole upgrade, check re-install process and write the file name

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-13 Thread AG Restringere
AWESOME, just did a controlled test post Nvidia 304.37 Installation via
Nvidia binary sh installer...

0. Assumes installation of 304.37 Nvidia Binary Driver

1. Okay installed the latest Xorg Core Server '2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.7' via
Update Manager.

2. Went into Google Chrome and opened about:gpu-internals and
triggered an X crash and got brought back to greeter.

3. Switched to TTY1, stopped Lightdm...

4. Ran 'NVIDIA*304.37.run --sanity' Nvidia installation sanity check and this
is the output:
= '/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so is not a symbolic link!'
= 'Installation was altered since the last installation. It is recommended
that you reinstall the driver

5. Reinstalled the Nvidia 304.37 Binaries as instructed by the Nvidia
sanity checker.

6. Restarted Lightdm.

7. Navigated to Google Chrome and ran about:gpu-internals and guess
what? NO CRASH :-)

Think this solves the problem...

Seems that you must not alter any files used by the Nvidia drivers or
you will have problems...

I solved my problem by switching to gdm and upgrading to Nvidia 304.34.
