Você pode atualizar do 9.04 para o 9.10 e então para o 10.04. Se você não
está usando uma versão LTS (8.04 ou 10.04), você só pode atualizar

Resolvi queimar o ubuntu 10.04, fiz o computador fazer boot do cd, instalei
o ubuntu mas a minha máquina tem windows xp profissional e ao escolher o
ubuntu para inicializar aparece a seguinte mensagem:
que o arquivo windows root\system 32\hal.dll corrompido.

Obrigado pelo feedback André, vou tentar:
1. Esquece o pendrive.
2. Entrei no site do ubuntu e fiz o dowload do iso.
3. Em seguida queimei um cd com a imagem iso do ubuntu.
4. Entrei no setup da minha máquina e ordenei que ela iniciasse o boot pelo
cd.
5. Iniciou pelo CD.
