tl;dr:  X is getting a major update this week for natty.  Be careful
when upgrading the next few days.

Thanks everyone who tested xorg-edgers.  Feedback has been positive and
everything looks good to go.

We are currently uploading the dependencies for this new X stack into
Natty, as you may have noticed.  Our goal is to get it all in by
Friday for the Alpha-2 release coming next week.

We have already uploaded various prerequisites and dependencies.  This
includes major updates for libdrm and mesa, which are worth special
mention.  This includes improved OpenGL functionality, Sandy Bridge
support, and a variety of bug fixes.  For full details see
http://mesa3d.org/relnotes-7.10.html.  It also includes some changes to
ABI packaging which may affect other packages dependent on libdrm driver
packages.  Please keep an eye out for regressions in 3D functionality or
packaging issues associated with libdrm or mesa.

A variety of driver updates is also planned for the coming week,
including -intel, -ati, -nouveau, -synaptics, etc.  We're going to try
to get these updates in prior to the xserver update where possible.

xserver 1.10 will be updated probably Wednesday or Thursday.  This
server has a new server and video ABI, which means existing driver
packages will break.

The server needs to be uploaded first so the new drivers build against
the correct ABI, which means that there will be a period where safe
upgrades will have held-back packages.  The dependencies should ensure
that you won't accidentally get a non-working combination of Xserver and
drivers, but be careful if an upgrade wants to remove X packages.

We are also going to be demoting several of the really obscure/ancient X
drivers (apm, ark, chips, glide, i740, tseng, and voodoo; perhaps more)
that no one seems to use.  These will still be in the archive (for now)
but will live only in universe and require manual installation by anyone
that happens to need them.  If you particularly care about any of these
drivers, just let us know.

I think I should start referring it as GNU/X/Compiz/Gnome/Linux instead 
of Linux.

in fact my one liner was not meant as a neighborly suggestion it was
to point out at the absurdity of the whole thing.

There is a constituency of folks - who feel that legally Linux is
GNU/Llinux - therefore lets say we accept that they may have a point.

However what we call something does not always reflect its real name ,
we all go around calling our country (India in this case)  India , the
Indian team, India this, India that. But is this India's full name -
nope we are actually called,  to be very accurate, as  resolved in the
constitution the Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic of
India,  while the favored official name is  the Republic of India.
Take your pick.

Now lets all start writing and talking about this as the correct
name(s) and lets get on with complicating our lifes. because naming
things in full does not mean its more accurate or more known.

Do you which country is the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
imagine if every country in the world had such long and fancy names -
we would have a terrible time forget the waste of bandwidth, paper
space and generally nonsense.

Coming back to Linux - what exactly is the correct legal name - i am
not sure and am not sure i even want to know esp if its going to be
something like Manish suggests - apart from everything else i think
the name itself will drive away 50 % of the new comers.

so to repeat its important to know our origins (both country and OS)
but we don't need burn blood over it.

At this point i want to differentiate between politically incorrect
language that propound deep seated differences - be they gender,
caste, colour etc. That language is not acceptable not because it may
be illegal but because it promotes strife and enforces a kind of
mindset. Calling Linux isn't that.

I think i should make a statement here. What makes an operating system. The
kernel as well as its utilities. Correct me if i am wrong. while saying
linux we are talking of only the kernel. Then where is the mention of the
utilities which make up the os. It is like mentioning the car engine which
represents only a part of the car.

In Simmbook we used Ubuntu Ver 9.04  9.10
In Desktop we are using Ubuntu Ver 9.10  10.10


 The challenges with these companies are they Don't know how to Sell Ubuntu,
 they struggle with Demos and hence don't promote it.
 If we can form a group of people willing to help them demo Ubuntu in
 different cities, we can made a difference.
 What is needed for Ubuntu enthusiasts need to go and explain Ubuntu to
 general users. OEMs need this support at stores, exhibitions, boots, etc.
 If people are interested, let me know .. we can create a list of people
 willing to help, cities and availability. Like someone may be available only
 on a weekend or evening.

Merci d'avoir pris les devants et d'avoir testé cet outil. Au Québec
beaucoup d'entreprises et particuliers qui utilisent déjà OpenOffice.org
auront ce critère de compatibilité à évaluer pour passer à LibreOffice
(ou pas!).

Pourrais-tu SVP ajouter cette information sur
http://libreoffice.shapado.com ? J'ai invité les éditeurs de ce logiciel
(Druide) à répondre sur ce site et à ajouter LibreOffice à leur liste de
compatibilité.

Malheureusement, sur mon portable, l'intégration ne se fait pas dans 
cette suite bureautique.  Toutefois, la compagnie a dit que le support 
complet sera dans la prochaine mise à jour.   Il est vrai que je n'ai 
pas désinstallé OOo.  Je ferai l'expérience dans les prochains jours et 
vous en tiendrez informé.

CORRECTION

J'utilisais la version 3.3.0 rc2 de LO.  J'ai installé la version finale 
de LO 3.3.0 et Antidote s'est intégré sans problèmes.  J'en profite pour 
dire merci à Druide pour maintenir ses versions à jour, même sous Ubuntu.

dans l'onglet Autres logiciels dans KPackageKit pour la source du dépôt
et en tapant dans le terminal Konsole:

wget -qO - http://deb.opera.com/archive.key | sudo apt-key add -

et puis Opera 11.0 build 1176 ne s'est pas téléchargé de lui-même. Même
après l'avoir téléchargé et installé, le programme ne s'affichait même pas
dans ma liste de mes applications dans la rubrique Internet.

grognements caverneux ... J'ai perdu patience. Est-ce que cette fameuse
clé a été corrigée? Comment savez-vous si la clé est expirée ou qu'elle a
été corrigée? Où vovez-vous cela? Comment pourrais-je vérifier que cette
clé a été corrigée, si elle a été corrigée?

Nota bene: j'utilise Kubuntu 10.10 et non Ubuntu... Je ne pense pas que
cela fasse une énorme différence mais tout de même certainement quelque
différence.

Cela fait un bout que j'ai abandonné et que j'installe Opera
manuellement à partir du paquet Debian sur leur site.  Je figure que le
temps que je passerais à essayer de rendre ça automatique avec les
dépôts est supérieur au temps passé à installer/mettre à jour avec le
fichier .deb manuellement...   Et c'est pas pire que d'installer un
logiciel dans Windows via un exécutable...

Moi je suis sur Linux Mint 9, basé sur Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. J'ai téléchargé  
et installé Opera 11 quand il est sorti, l'ai pas aimé et suis revenu à  
Opera 10.63.
Pour ce qui est de la clé, je ne retrouve plus la page, mais il était bien  
écrit que la clé expirait le 26 janvier 2010. Pis aujourd'hui je me suis  
tanné d'attendre que la clé soit corrigée automatiquement (si elle l'est,  
mes souvenirs sont erratiques à ce sujet) et je l'ai installée moi-même à  
partir du site http://deb.opera.com/
Quant à savoir pourquoi Opera ne s'affiche pas dans tes rubriques  
internet, peut-être te faut-il l'ouvrir une première fois à partir de la  
Konsole et l'ajouter manuellement par la suite à ta rubrique. Je ne  
connais pas le côté kubuntu de la distribution, alors je ne saurais dire  
avec certitude, mais ça m'arrive parfois, quand je télécharge un logiciel  
manuellement, qu'il n'apparaisse pas dans le menu et qu'il me faille alors  
l'y ajouter manuellement.

je n'ai rien touché et je viens de faire actualiser la liste des paquets et
surprise, pas d'avertissement de clé invalide avec Opera, donc ils ont règlé
le problème, sans plus...

dans mon cas, Opera à toujours apparu sous le menu Internet dans Ubuntu,
j'ignore ce qui peut se passer sous Kubuntu, ça prendrait quelqu'un qui
l'ait pour y répondre.

j'ai la version 11.0 #1176 qui s'est installée toute seule comme toutes les
versions antérieures...
et j'adore les nouvelles fonctionnalitées.

On the subject of crapware, my boss decided to try ubuntu on his new dell 
latitude laptop running win7, he installed it by himself, and came to me the 
next day when it was broken. Turns out dell wrote a dock-like application for 
win7, which they preinstalled and it cripples grub everytime it loads.

That was the end of his Linux adventure

lowlatency kernel status?

What is really the current status of the lowlatency kernel? Are we 
planning to have it in universe for Natty? If so, is any work going on 
in that area?


I talked to Andy Whitcroft yesterday about providing derivative 
flavour documentation, but he is currently busy with other tasks so 
this documentation will have to wait (no prognosis given). So I assume 
that waiting on that documentation is not an option.


Also, do we have any signs of this kernel performing better than the 
generic one? (As for bug 690010, that's fixed upstream now, and will be 
fixed in the generic kernel on the next Natty kernel upload.)

LCA 2011 Open Day - THIS SATURDAY!

Good evening Ubuntu-AU'ers,

I hope those of you at LCA2011 are enjoying yourselves (I definitely
am - if you're at the conference and want to catch up shoot me an
email - jrnor...@gmail.com or head_victim on IRC). I'm sorry about the
lack of information about the Open Day changes but there has been very
little to go on until now. The official website at
http://conf.linux.org.au/programme/open_day has just now been updated
with the new details. It is all still going ahead as previously
planned except the location is now at the new venue of QUT Kelvin
Grove in the QUT refectory in C Block (see
http://www.qut.edu.au/about/location/pdf/kelvingrove_map_colour.pdf
for a campus map).

From experience of this week there should be reasonable amounts of
parking and if you're not sure where to park I would recommend F
Block. It's a multi level car park and only costs $6.00 for the whole
day. It's only a short walk (unfortunately uphill to get there but at
least at the end of the day it will be downhill) to get to C Block.

  You don't need to do any conversion. The only thing required is, as
  mentioned in the bug, to coordinate with upstream to get this fixed
  there. By the comments on the upstream bug, it seems it has already
  happened.
  
  In addition to that, you can help getting translations into Ubuntu by
  reuploading the failed translation file with the fix.
  
  In order to do that, you can:
  
   1. Go to
  
  https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/natty/+source/firefox/+imports
   2. Get the nn-NO.xpi file from there
   3. Uncompress it (xpi files are basically zip files)
   4. Fix the file with the error
   5. Compress the files back using zip compression, naming the file
  as the original (nn-NO)
   6. Change the extension of the compressed file you've created
  from .zip to .xpi
   7. Upload this file to
  
  https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/natty/+source/firefox/+pots/firefox/nn/+upload

So a quick update on this: it seems that indeed step 7 can be done, but
just partly; the import fails because the upload does not have the
Launchpad header with the date. This is something that can be fixed in
PO files, but not in XPI files. So I've gone ahead and I did a
maintainer upload of all pending XPIs to avoid this check.

I or some community members fixed the errors in the problematic XPIs and
now all languages have been imported, except from Tamil from Sri Lanka,
which is still giving some errors. I'll get it imported in the next few
days.

As per the other languages which did not have an upstream XPI, please
let me know if you want me to import them. I've already done Galician
(please check if the translation is ok in Launchpad and do let me know).

I seem to remember there were Asturian and Malayalam translations as
well, which are committed in the VCS upstream but do not have Mozilla
language packs yet. If you want me to import them, please let me know
and we'll try to figure out how we do it.

As you are asking for advice and tips, I thought it would be worth

My only advice would be, if you are presenting Ubuntu to people who
don't know much about it, to start with the basics and don't get too
much into detail. Ubuntu.com does a good job at that, for example.

This might not be of interest to many, however I feel I shouldn't keep this a
secret any more, as there may be some of you who can provide advice and tips -
I will be (potentially) talking to the head of BBC Wales (eep!) and many other
people who don't know what Ubuntu is, yet alone my team's mammoth effort to
translate the thousands of strings in Ubuntu.

Myself and Christopher Swift (the administrator of the Ubuntu Wales LoCo) have
offered to do a Presentation/Demonstration of Ubuntu and Launchpad, We are also
taking CD's and USB drives to allow us to demonstrate and/or install Ubuntu on
people's laptops and Netbooks.

This conference will primarily be in Welsh however with a basic grasp of yr

for what can be done with technology and the Welsh language. After a year with
enough negativity, it is important to celebrate what is good and trying to cut
through the darkness with positive message.

Movido pela curiosidade acabei realizando o procedimento ontem mesmo à noite.
Algumas tentativas de levantar o x não surtiram efeito de forma alguma e parti 
para a instalação do kernel do Maverick. Embora minha banda estivesse péssima 
(30 minutos para baixar os 2 pacotes) a instalação ocorreu com sucesso. 
Reiniciei o sistema e executou sem problemas, muito legal a opção.

Bem, isto foi um teste que fiz para confirmar sua instrução para os que 
quiserem realizar o procedimento. Não sei se esta máquina permanecerá com o 
Gnome, vou fazer uns ajustes nela e ver se o mantenho ou parto para o lxde. A 
princípio preferiria o fluxbox... mas minha patroa vai se atrapalhar com ele ;) 
já que ela usa mais essa máquina que eu.

Se eu não entendi errado, o que quer dizer com isso aí que te mandei é que
não se pode mapear toda memória de 4GB porque outros dispositivos são
mapeados em endereços iguais e com isso, uma parte da RAM é perdida. Por
isso o PAE estende em 4 bits o endereçamento.

Este livro Computer Organization and Design Third Edition: The
Hardware/Software Interface explica muito bem o funcionamento da memória,
mesmo que seja a arquitetura MIPS32 a usada (foi o que usei na graduação).

Pessoal, só para constar.

Ontem a patroa acessou o 4Shared para baixar um artigo em pdf e clicou 
erroneamente no link de download do downloader deles.
Ela me chamou porque ocorreu algo estranho para ela: Foi aberto o gerenciador 
de pacotes para instalação de um .deb. Cancelei a instalação porém fiquei 
surpreso, habitualmente esses recursos são disponibilizados em executáveis 
para Windows, foi a primeira vez que ví um .deb disponibilizado em sites como 
esse.
Então, fica a dica para que usuários sem experiencia nestes casos não saiam 
instalando um monte de porcarias no sistema sem saber como remove-las em caso 
de problemas.

Sempre vai existir virus e afins, pois os usuários são o problema e não a 
máquina, é muito fácil criar um aplicativo e criar um DEB pra instalação.
No caso do Linux apesar do estrago ser menor, não está imune e até porque 
está mudando a intenção dos pentelhos de plantão com respeito a arquivos 
maliciosos.
O caras querem pegar seus dados e não destruir sua máquina, pois isso seria 
inutil pra eles.
As pragas nos computadores estão ralacionadas ao comportamento (educação) do 
usuário.
Então é assim, se você se cuidar... não precisa se preocupar, com virus e 
afins...
Eu uso WinXP também porque preciso, e faz muito, mas muito tempo mesmo que 
não sei o que são virus ou spy.

Jeferson,
Pode até ser um aplicativo sem intenções maliciosas, o problema é não saber se 
é compatível com o sistema, se é funcional e presta para alguma coisa. Para 
mim, downloaders e add searchs são lixo, mas tem gente que gosta dessas 
presepadas.
É a mesma coisa que baixar um programa no superdownloads, instalar e depois 
ficar questionando o porque dos problemas sem saber como remover o carinha.
Logicamente a instalação terá que ser autorizada, só dei o alerta porque é a 
primeira vez que ví esse tipo de benefício ;)

Por isso é sempre importante manter permissões adequadas aos usuários que
estão utilizando a máquina. Um usuário sem permissões administrativas não
conseguirá instalar o pacote .deb mesmo clicando nele por acidente. Até o
windows agora utiliza um esquema parecido, permitindo ao usuário que vai
realizar uma tarefa que exige privilégios administrativos autenticar-se como
tal e limitando as atividades do usuário normal.

Hehehehe pentelhos de plantão ;) Ótima essa.

Nesse caso, especificamente, é sòmente lixo a ser acrescido ao sistema mas pode 
haver incompatibilidade com a versão do Ubuntu e criar problemas posteriores, 
principalmente por parte dos que estão entrando agora no sistema... a 
curiosidade de testar prá ver se rola.
Digo isso de cadeira, pois quando comecei baixava um monte de trecos para 
aprender a fazer instalações.

Eu também faz mto tempo que não sei o que é vírus/spyware (nos meus PC's é
claro). Mas a minha indignação é com relação ao incômodo, aquela coisa
principalmente destes sites de upload de arquivos, onde vc tem um botão
Download Now! que na verdade faz vc fazer o download de outra coisa, ou te
direciona para outro site. Outra coisa que me irrita são aqueles protetores
de links que vc tem que cadastrar celular... aff que lixo... povo não
tem mais oq inventar...

O difícil é fazer um novato entender isso... a curiosidade pelas novidades do 
sistema é mais forte que a prudência :)

Previsível, no meu ponto de vista. 
O acesso por máquinas linux deve ser bem mais intenso que as estatísticas 
mensuradas e esses caras monitoram isso. Se você acompanhar um contador de 
visitas de um site verá que, apesar de parecer insignificante em relação aos 
Ws, o número de acessos por máquinas linux vem crescendo gradativamente. 
Amarrar recursos de acesso é interessante para eles e, se o fazem com Windows 
users, por que não com Linux users? É vantagem, é mídia, é marketing.

Não precisa cadastrar celular... abre o código fonte da página, copia e cola o 
endereço do link que está próximo ao final do html.
Se não funfar na página de cadastramento, insere um celular qualquer e pega na 
página de redirecionamento ;)

Este aditivo é do site que disponibiliza o encaminhamento para o hospedeiro, 
neste último não há nenhuma solicitação de cadastramento, apenas aquelas 
limitações para ver se pegam tua assinatura para um plano Pró.

E a ousadia tb mas é bem isso mesmo

A todo momento navegando na web sofremos chantagens (vc tem que instalar
isso para obter aquilo), e se não tivermos conhecimento destes artifícios,
estaremos condenando nossos sistemas operacionais aos poucos, sendo
obrigados a serem reinstalados (após chegar ao cúmulo da lentidão).

Eu tenho um PC na minha casa com XP SP2 nele, onde minha esposa meche
apenas. O Firefox, coitado, tem mais search bars do que área livre para
exibição de páginas web, isso tudo por causa de promessas de emoticons para
msn.

Portanto, essas ladainhas são feitas apenas para usuários leigos, que muitas
vezes não sabem nem que dá para fazer transações bancárias em um computador,
e quem paga o pato são os mais sérios, aguentando lentidão, ou chegar ao
cúmulo de terem seus dados bancários roubados.

Acho que computador deveria ser pessoal (assim como a sigla PC sugere:
Personal Computer), como um celular. Na verdade acho que a tendência é essa
mesmo. Enquanto isso vamos levando =D

 Pode até ser um aplicativo sem intenções maliciosas, o problema é não saber
 se é compatível com o sistema, se é funcional e presta para alguma coisa.
 Para mim, downloaders e add searchs são lixo, mas tem gente que gosta dessas
 presepadas.
 É a mesma coisa que baixar um programa no superdownloads, instalar e depois
 ficar questionando o porque dos problemas sem saber como remover o carinha.
 Logicamente a instalação terá que ser autorizada, só dei o alerta porque é
 a primeira vez que ví esse tipo de benefício ;)

Isso eu já saquei mesmo... na verdade tem um contador regressivo, que
habilita o link certo depois de X segundos. Vc não precisa cadastrar celular
nenhum. E tem gente que cadastra, e ainda quando é direcionado para o site
de download o link não está mais disponível.
Particularmente uso o Firebug para ver o código fonte e os elementos HTML
escondidos. Também funciona. Mas um leigo não sabe de nenhum destes
artifícios.

 Não precisa cadastrar celular... abre o código fonte da página, copia e
 cola o endereço do link que está próximo ao final do html.
 Se não funfar na página de cadastramento, insere um celular qualquer e pega
 na página de redirecionamento ;)

 Este aditivo é do site que disponibiliza o encaminhamento para o
 hospedeiro, neste último não há nenhuma solicitação de cadastramento, apenas
 aquelas limitações para ver se pegam tua assinatura para um plano Pró.
