[ubuntu-in] Mailman Moderation policy
Hi All, I have seen off late a lot of emails getting stuck at moderation due to excessive body size. And main reason has been not proper trimming of messages, not following mailing list guidelines. If you would want your emails not to be moderated by mailman and just smoothly pass through, ensure you properly trim the message you are replying to and not over quote. Also top posting (with the entire thread contents below), the email shall result in Mail body too huge moderation message and hence wait until it is approved by one of the admins. So the solution to all this, and to keep our mailing list archives neat and clean for future viewing lets follow the mailing list guidelines present here from now. http://ubuntu-in.info/wiki/index.php/MailingList_Guidelines (There is a reason for trimmed interleaved posting. It makes following a thread very easy in the future.) Thanks a lot! Regards, Aanjhan -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

And if you'll bear with me for a minute I'll set the scene for what we hope to achieve in that time. Server A good Koala knows how to see the wood for the trees, even when her head is in the clouds. Ubuntu aims to keep free software at the forefront of cloud computing by embracing the API's of Amazon EC2, and making it easy for anybody to setup their own cloud using entirely open tools. We're currently in beta with official Ubuntu base AMI's for use on Amazon EC2. During the Karmic cycle we want to make it easy to deploy applications into the cloud, with ready-to-run appliances or by quickly assembling a custom image. Ubuntu-vmbuilder makes it easy to create a custom AMI today, but a portfolio of standard image profiles will allow easier collaboration between people doing similar things on EC2. Wouldn't it be apt for Ubuntu to make the Amazon jungle as easy to navigate as, say, APT? What if you want to build an EC2-style cloud of your own? Of all the trees in the wood, a Koala's favourite leaf is Eucalyptus. The Eucalyptus project, from UCSB, enables you to create an EC2-style cloud in your own data center, on your own hardware. It's no coincidence that Eucalyptus has just been uploaded to universe and will be part of Jaunty - during the Karmic cycle we expect to make those clouds dance, with dynamically growing and shrinking resource allocations depending on your needs. A savvy Koala knows that the best way to conserve energy is to go to sleep, and these days even servers can suspend and resume, so imagine if we could make it possible to build a cloud computing facility that drops its energy use virtually to zero by napping in the midday heat, and waking up when there's work to be done. No need to drink at the energy fountain when there's nothing going on. If we get all of this right, our Koala will help take the edge off the bear market. If that sounds rather open and nebulous, then we've hit the sweet spot for cloud computing futurology. Let me invite you to join the server team at UDS in Barcelona, when they'll be defining the exact set of features to ship in October. Desktop First impressions count. We're eagerly following the development of kernel mode setting, which promises a smooth and flicker-free startup. We'll consider options like Red Hat's Plymouth, for graphical boot on all the cards that support it. We made a splash years ago with Usplash, but it's time to move to something newer and shinier. So the good news is, boot will be beautiful. The bad news is, you won't have long to appreciate it! It only takes 35 days to make a whole Koala, so we think it should be possible to bring up a stylish desktop much faster. The goal for Jaunty on a netbook is 25 seconds, so let's see how much faster we can get you all the way to a Koala desktop. We're also hoping to deliver a new login experience that complements the graphical boot, and works well for small groups as well as very large installations. For those of you who can relate to Mini Me, or already have a Dell Mini, the Ubuntu Netbook Edition will be updated to include all the latest technology from Moblin, and tuned to work even better on screens that are vertically challenged. With millions of Linux netbooks out there, we have been learning and adapting usability to make the Koala cuddlier than ever. We also want to ensure that the Netbook Remix installs easily and works brilliantly on all the latest netbook hardware, so consider this a call for testing Ubuntu 9.04 if you're the proud owner of one of these dainty items. The desktop will have a designer's fingerprints all over it - we're now beginning the serious push to a new look. Brown has served us well but the Koala is considering other options. Come to UDS for a preview of the whole new look. UDS in Barcelona, 25-29 May As always, the Ubuntu Developer Summit will be jam-packed with ideas, innovations, guests and gurus. It's a wombat and dingbat-free zone, so if you're looking for high-intensity developer discussions, beautiful Barcelona will be the place to rest your opposable thumbs in May. It's where the Ubuntu community, Canonical engineers and partners come together to discuss, debate and design the Karmic Koala. The event is the social and strategic highlight of each release cycle. However if you want me to install KDE using kubuntu or using ubuntu responsibility then what is the use of experimenting with ubuntu? I hope you will take my efforts as a challenge. I just want to say that anyone can install KDE using kubuntu and all, but then how will we able to know the nity-grity of ubuntu and its kernel?? Hold! How will you come to know of the kernel by installing KDE from other distros? We appreciate your willingness to pick up challenges, but this is (to be very polite) *stupidity*. And also you need not install KDE if you are already on Kubuntu. Kubuntu is KDE based Ubuntu. To know the nitty-gritty of Ubuntu, there are several other ways. For. e.g. attending the weekly get together's initiated by folks, taking part in the Ubuntu Global Bug Jam, triaging bugs in Launchpad, helping Ubuntu team to test Alpha releases and fix issues. IMO these are better ways to get to know the Ubuntu system and the Ubuntu Community better. Also kernel is the same across distros (except for a few distro specific changes) and has nothing to do with KDE Installation. Please don't take me otherwise as I am a kind of experimental person. Great!! I have a couple of suggestions for you. Experiment with the development Ubuntu release a.k.a Jaunty Alpha releases. Very unstable and will definitely be challenging to sort things out. Also, will help the Ubuntu devels for fixing issues in the next release. http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/jaunty/alpha3 Or as Fabian mentioned compile KDE from source svn and get things rolling! HTH! Hello fellow Ubunteros, Wish you all a Merry Christmas and a great New year 2009. Thanks a lot for being part of this wonderful community and sharing your questions, issues, solutions and other general stuff here. As you all know, we moved recently from Canonical hosted website to our own hosting which means self funding. We successfully ran the first year with no hiccups. Huge Huge thanks to Ghose. Now the hosting provider has doubled their rates and we would require about 9000 INR per year to keep running the show. It will be great if some of us could pitch in and contribute how much ever we can. The new rates are effective from Jan 2009. Please get in touch with admins at ubuntu-in dot info if interested so that we can provide more details. Thanks in advance and have a great new year ahead. [ubuntu-in] Fwd: [foss.in] CfP Announced
-- Forwarded message -- From: Kishore Bhargava [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 11:17 PM Subject: [foss.in] CfP Announced To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] All: The CfP is finally out, check the main site (http://foss.in) for details. Text version below: FOSS.IN/2008: Call for Participation Much awaited and slightly delayed, we are finally ready with the CfP. Time is short, so please read through carefully and get ready with your proposals. The registration system will open from October 10, 2008. Introduction FOSS.IN is a contributor event, focusing on development efforts in FOSS from India. This is a Call for Participation inviting proposals for talks and FOSS WorkOuts at FOSS.IN/2008 Format == FOSS.IN/2008 will have significantly fewer talks than previous editions of the event. The focus of FOSS.IN/2008 will be FOSS developers working together, attempting to tackle challenges in the FOSS world. In order to facilitate this, this year's edition of FOSS.IN will be centered around FOSS WorkOuts. FOSS WorkOuts = FOSS WorkOuts are developer-led sessions with a focus on tackling real challenges in a project. Each WorkOut will occur in a single hall for 3 hours, either in the morning session, or post-lunch session. Special requests may be made for day-long WorkOuts. WorkOuts are to be proposed via the FOSS.IN contact system. The proposer is expected to drive the session as the WorkOut Lead. Accepted WorkOuts will be published as per the schedule below, following which interested delegates may request to be part of the WorkOut using the registration system. The WorkOut Lead will then select the participants based on the problems at hand and the skills required to solve them. At the end of each day, the WorkOut Lead will present a summary, and possibly a demo, of the challenges addressed during FOSS.IN. A proposal for a WorkOut must contain the following information: * Purpose of the session — issue(s) being tackled * Agenda to solve these issues. This includes: * What needs to be achieved before the event * What will be done at the event * Link to a planning page/mail thread * Pre-requisites for participants, such as: * Code to be familiar with * Tools required * Special Hardware or Software Requirements Remember that a well-defined agenda with very specific goals is far more likely to be accepted than a vaguely defined or overly ambitious one. Keynotes There will be a keynote at the start of each day of FOSS.IN/2008, as well as the end of the final day. Keynotes will be in-depth, technical talks from well-established contributors in the FOSS world. The event opening keynote will be by an Indian FOSS contributor and sets the tone for the event. Only the closing keynote on the final day will be on a non-technical, but relevant topic. Talks = Other than keynotes, FOSS.IN/2008 will have three to five talks per day, held in the Main Auditorium. Each talk will be between 45 - 75 minutes in length. Talks are expected to be technical in nature, and targeted towards an audience of contributors, with an emphasis on where contribution is required in the project, and how it may be achieved. Speakers may submit talks via the speaker registration system. After the deadline for talk submission, the organizers will publish the list of accepted talks. Speakers are requested to submit slides in PDF format. The organizers will then review the submitted slides and suggest feedback if required. If a speaker fails to provide slides, the organizers will select another talk to replace it. Please see below for the various deadlines. Talk proposals must have the following information: * Abstract * Intended audience, and prerequisites * Speaker's biography, including a list of contributions While submitting a talk, speakers should ask themselves what their audience will take away from the talk, and how it will help them contribute to the project. Contribution is the key focus of the event and all submissions will be judged on their relevance to increasing contribution. Project of the Day == Every day at FOSS.IN/2008 will feature a Project of the Day. Talks related to the Project of the Day will be held at the 250-seater SDA Auditorium. The Project of the Day session will begin after the morning keynote and feature a set of talks and hands-on/hacking sessions. Talks for the Project of the Day must be submitted in the same manner as other talks. This must be followed by a Letter of Intent from a contributor to the project, which must be submitted via the contact system and contain the following information: * Proposer's name * Proposer's role in the project * Agenda for the Project of the Day session * Proposed schedule of the day As with talks and WorkOuts, Project of the Day sessions must be aimed at getting contribution towards solving very specific problems or challenges in the

[ubuntu-in] [Fwd: [blug-non-tech] FOSS.IN/2008: The Omelette Post :)]
Original Message Subject: [blug-non-tech] FOSS.IN/2008: The Omelette Post :) Date: Wed, 1 Oct 2008 16:51:06 +0530 (IST) From: Atul Chitnis [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: FOSS.IN [EMAIL PROTECTED] All: A lot of people have noticed that unlike in previous years, we are not as loud about FOSS.IN as we usually are. Now that the Call for Participation is about to be published, it is time to explain why FOSS.IN/2008 is going to be different from earlier incarnations. First a quick reminder: FOSS.IN/2008 happens November 25-29, 2008, in Bangalore, India. The website is at http://foss.in. EVENT FOCUS --- FOSS.IN has never been about advocacy, or philosophical discussions. While such discussions may have their place, they steal valuable bandwidth when it comes to getting things done. Especially here in India, where we tend to lean towards political and religious aspects more easily than we tend to roll up our sleeves and get some work done, it is important to understand that FOSS.IN is meant to achieve tangible results. With this in mind, FOSS.IN/2007 (last year's event) did not accept talks that did not deliver practical, technical knowledge related to FOSS. And the talks had to be delivered by actual contributors to the project being discussed. Also, FOSS.IN is NOT a newbie event. A newbie is defined as someone who has no skills or knowledge or experience that would allow him or her to immediately contribute to FOSS development. As has been repeatedly explained to anyone who would listen - there are lots of newbie oriented events all through the year, all over India, and people should be geting their introductions to FOSS and their initial learning at such events, including at user group meetings. However, I personally was still unhappy with last years' results. Despite the fact that we made it clear that we did not want to see elementary stuff being covered at FOSS.IN, many of the talks were just that. The Projects Days were very popular, but FOSS.IN is not about popularity, it is about results. And the bottom line is that while there was a measureable increase in people getting involved in FOSS contribution, the quality left a lot to be desired. Most new contributors focused only on low hanging fruit, such as translations, and distro-specific packaging. If people got involved with code, it was usually bug fixes and code maintenance. While all these activities are extremely important, they do not need an event like FOSS.IN to be triggered off - these are things one can get involved with instantly, without really asking anyone, or attending a talk. FOSS.IN is far more ambitious, and is definitely not meant to cater to the equivalent of outsourcing code/package maintenance. Our event is meant to highlight Indian contribution to Free and Open Source Software - not just bug fixes, but real code contributions, real innovation, real projects. Last year, we changed the event slogan from Technology for a Free World (that we had used since Linux Bangalore/2001) to Linus Torvalds' immortal oneliner: Talk is Cheap, Show Me the Code This, in no uncertain terms, firmly declares the focus of FOSS.IN. Effective this year, FOSS.IN will focus on developers, and results. It will highlight credible efforts by people in India contributing to FOSS, and will bring together developers at peer level, to allow them to interact, discuss, develop and deliver. Delivery does not mean mere bug fixing. Delivery will be new features to existing applications, completely new subsystems (e.g. file systems, device drivers, etc.), (re)design of systems and applications, etc. Now I understand that many people will feel left out. There will be howls from the detractors about us abandoning the basis for Free and Open Source Software, and us being Anti-FOSS. This is because in their minds, we must always cater only to beginners, and bring more people into the fold. Thank you, but that line of thinking was old when someone said that Linux is cancer and Anti-American (and I think there were a few chairs involved, too). Just because we choose to do things differently does not mean that we are doing it wrong. Yes, we realise that this will reduce the number of people who may come to the event. Maybe we will be 500 people, maybe 1000. But that is OK. We are trying to produce results that are measurable by our yardsticks (active/increased contributors out of India), not those invariably used by others (4.91 quantillion participants). At FOSS.IN/2008, we want to see the best of the best from India. We want to see the people who actually write the code, and who ARE contributing, interact face to face with their peers from across the world. And at the end of the event, we want to be able to publish results. *REAL* results. And the names of the people involved. *PEOPLE*, not companies. Over the five days between November 25th to 29th, we are going to change the
