My intention is to fix this multi-faceted bug in an incremental and
solvable manner.
My suggestions ARE along these lines :D
That the bug has been around for 2.5 years is a testament to the fact
that it is difficult to solve. Breaking it down into manageable bits
is a tried and true
I've same problem. To fix it I've add blacklist wl in
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file.
Now all work perfectly.

You
The original bug is fixed. The problem now though, is when you upgrade,
dpkg runs the old prerm script which tries to stop winbind. This
procedure fails due to the syntax error in the old init script, which
prevents the upgrade.
You can work around this by hand-editing /etc/init.d/winbind before
moving or deleting /etc/init.d/winbind allows apt to update it normally.
As long as you install the package maintainers version then you are ok

You haven't fixed the correct line in the man page.
You've changed the -Oe example instead of the -Ov.

Why was this bug marked as invalid? The package install should set up a
basic working configuration, or allow the user to set it up via debconf.
All that is needed is a subnet declaration.
