from my.cnf. The option has also been removed from mysql-dfsg-5.1.

This is my output on trying to upgrade to 5.1 after uninstalling 5.0:
sudo apt-get install mysql-server-5.1
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
bsd-mailx libmysqlclient16 mailx mysql-client
I managed to get it working by commenting out the line
skip-dbd
in /etc/mysql/my.cnf
