[Bug 1278365] [NEW] ntpdate target server
Public bug reported: ntpdate calls a ubuntu specific ntp server on network-interface startup. This causes some slight but unnessesary privacy issues as it identifies the client software to anyone listening on the network. This issue can be solved easily by adding the ubuntu/canonical ntp server to a public ntp pool and (maybe) using a more common server name (ntp.canonical instead of ntp.ubuntu) This way there is no privacy issue regaring network traffic and it is a public service by helping public ntp pools ** Affects: ntp (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ntp in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1278365 Title: ntpdate target server To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ntp/+bug/1278365/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1267393] Re: [MIR] juju-core, juju-mongodb, gccgo-go, gccgo-*
Adding golang toolchain to MIR; scale testing to 1000 clients had some rather nasty side-effects on the juju bootstrap node, which pushed a virtual memory footprint of 50G/resident at 1G. [Bug 1278365] Re: ntpdate target server
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I'm not sure what the implications would be for making this change, and so am not comfortable with it. There may be issues with depending on third party servers, and also implications for Canonical IS to join a public pool as you suggest. It seems to me that this is up for debate, and thus it is not appropriate to just unilaterally make this change. Thus, as there is currently no clear action that can be taken on this bug, I'm marking it as Incomplete. Please obtain consensus on this proposed change, and then change the bug status to New, Invalid or Won't Fix as appropriate. I suggest that you try and seek consensus on the ubuntu-devel and/or ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing lists. ** Changed in: ntp (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ntp in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1278365 Title: ntpdate target server To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ntp/+bug/1278365/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1278365] Re: ntpdate target server
Hi, first thanks for submiting your bug. Short answers: 1. Where are you find a privacy issue? Please read the docu at - http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc5905.txt - http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc5906.txt - http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc5907.txt - http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc5908.txt 2. The use of ntp.ubuntu.com is IMHO the availability of the ntp - service. Ubuntu can not guarantee the availability of other service providers over the entire term. 3. It is easy to change the ntp server eg via dhcp Therefore I close this bug Thanks Jörg ** Changed in: ntp (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ntp in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1278365 Title: ntpdate target server To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ntp/+bug/1278365/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1278359] Re: ntpdate call frequency
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I recently dealt with this area of ntpdate's operation. On systems that have a hardware clock this is not nessesary, causeing unnessesary traffic and load on ntp servers. Can you quantify this, please? I believe this functionality was added on that basis that network interfaces are brought up only infrequently. I don't think it is appropriate for Ubuntu to differ from Debian on the behaviour here. Please can you seek the opinion of the Debian ntp maintainers in this area and petition for a change there instead? Ubuntu will then sync or merge any changes made in Debian. See this Debian bug in a related area: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi- bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=731352 As this bug describes behaviour that is by design, and I believe that your unnecessary traffic and load presents no significant impact to a majority of Ubuntu users, I'm marking this bug as Importance: Low. I don't think this bug will make any progress in Ubuntu without consensus from Debian ntp maintainers. ** Bug watch added: Debian Bug tracker #731352 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=731352 ** Changed in: ntp (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Low -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ntp in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1278359 Title: ntpdate call frequency To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ntp/+bug/1278359/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

OK, I started a sync for 0.4.2-1 in trusty. This bug should be closed when it is done. Thanks so much! [Bug 1078922] Re: Fan runs unnecessary
Because of the fan problem in Ubuntu 12.10 I still work with 12.04 LTS. In itself there is nothing wrong with that. Until February 4, 2014. On that day, an update arrived and I installed it as usual. Later that day I started my laptop again and after a while began the fan unnecessarily run at top speed. Now I have in 12.04 LTS the same problem as in 12.10. Now /var/log/apt/history.log was my friend. The packages fglrx and fglrx-amdcccle (version 13.101-0ubuntu0.0.1) were the cause. Both packages version 8.960-0ubuntu1.1 have I installed back and marked as hold. In Ubuntu 12.04 LTS the fan now behaves as described in the manual for my Compal laptop motherboard type KHLB2. [Bug 833994] Re: debian-installer does not support https when using with preseed files
I've committed the start of this upstream, now that I've fixed things to permit the use of GNU wget. My strategy here is going to be: * make fetch-url (for preseeding) and kickseed both work with HTTPS * overload debian-installer/allow_unauthenticated=false to imply wget --no-check-certificate (I think this is close enough; I couldn't think of a reason why you would care deeply about the HTTPS certificate and then not care about installing unauthenticated packages) * add wget-udeb to our default d-i builds (at least netboot, but probably globally) * add support to the d-i build system for local builds with SSLCERTS set to a list of paths to certificates * if you want to use the stock initramfs, you can make another initramfs containing just /usr/lib/ssl/certs/*.crt for whatever certificates you need, run c_rehash over that directory, and concatenate that to the stock initramfs either with cat or in your boot loader Once this is done, I'll be able to proceed with the next step, bug 1135163. ** Changed in: debian-installer-utils (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = Colin Watson (cjwatson) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to cobbler-enlist in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/833994 Title: debian-installer does not support https when using with preseed files To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cobbler-enlist/+bug/833994/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1042388] Re: qemu: Unsupported syscall: 257 (timer_create)
The fix that was commited to the Qemu git tree fixed the original test case I had. @pittit then found another test case that fails and I intend to fix that when I find a good chunk of free time. [Bug 1272115] Re: [SRU] cloud-init SmartOS datasource provider is not compliant to datadictionary
@rcj: this is as expected. The cloud-init user-data needs to have a metadata key of base64_keys=cloud-init:user-data in order for it to work. [Bug 640472] Re: mysqld causes 2-3 wakeups per second on idle
I've filed a feature request with upstream. In 5.1/5.5 the InnoDB storage engine will have a background thread that wakes up every one second. In future versions there will be more threads for background work (as this is required for multi-core scalability), so it is an interesting question how this will affect battery life. ** Bug watch added: MySQL Bug System #71662 http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=71662 ** Also affects: mysql-server via http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=71662 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to mysql-5.5 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/640472 Title: mysqld causes 2-3 wakeups per second on idle To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mysql-server/+bug/640472/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Marking as verification-done. The logs from comment #8, actually indicate that the test cases succeeded, however, it was failing due to using a non-official Ubuntu image. I verified the test cases.
