[Bug 357569] Re: please set usershare path

2009-04-15 Thread Thierry Carrez
OK, this bug is about net usershare info returning an error by
default, resulting in nautilus-share spurious messages. You suggest
adding usershare path = /var/lib/samba/usershares to smb.conf.
However, in default installs, net usershare info returns exactly the
same error with or without that parameter set:

$ net usershare info
net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error
No such file or directory
Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing.

That's because the default value of usershare path happens to be
/var/lib/samba/usershares already.
So again, I fail to see what this change would fix. Could you please explain it
to me.

[Bug 298374] Re: Samba daemon not starting

2009-04-15 Thread kuser
hello,

i am testing kubuntu jaunty alpha 6.
before samba was working very well.
since some updates this weekend i got same symptoms as described above.
samba simple won't start.
sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart looks good but ps -e |grep smb shows that
samba is not running.
also my other computer wont detect it anymore.
yesterday, i did purge all samba packages and installed it back again.. enabled
gust access, did not reboot and all was working fine again. but after rebooting
machine samba is behaving funny again and the worst thing is that i cannot find
related relevant info to solve this. i even landed on a brazilien samba site,
which, uhuu, looks nice but dancing samba didnt work either..
please tell me if more info needed, i will be glad to be of some use.
thx

[Bug 361066] Re: Difficult to share external hard drives

2009-04-15 Thread Thierry Carrez
Like you said, there is a couple of different bugs in that user story.
Could you please file separate bugs with the exact scenario to reproduce them,
including the error messages you got, and the expected behavior ? I'm closing
this one since we can only fix bugs about specific issues and not a general
difficulty.

Alternatively, you can submit a Make it easier/more intuitive to share
external hard drives in Ubuntu Brainstorm if you think the feature is
failing completely and must be redesigned.

[Bug 354243] Re: Nautilus fails to browse any share on network to which Iomega Home Network Hard Drive (MDHD500-N, firmware K108.W15) is attached.

2009-04-15 Thread Stephen D Kamm
Thank you. I confirm your summary.

smbtree -b -N returns no output

Opening the location as specified creates browse-able locations in
Nautilus, and mounts them on the Desktop. This is somewhat easier (in
my situation) than using the command line or modifying fstab. I will
test this in my real-life home network.

Shouldn't the operation of obtaining the NAS's IP address, as with
findsmb, and passing it to the browsing function be written into
Nautilus? It seems to me that it advances Ubuntu to have it just work
with cheap, widely-available hardware.

[Bug 354243] Re: Nautilus fails to browse any share on network to which Iomega Home Network Hard Drive (MDHD500-N, firmware K108.W15) is attached.

2009-04-15 Thread Stephen D Kamm
Bad news in real-life network (not the controlled experiment in bug
report):

Running Intrepid, desktop and laptop on network, each with own Samba
server (i.e. three total, including NAS), Nautilus
Locationsmb://192.168.1.66/ does not work. It shows shares, but does
not mount them on desktop, and attempting to browse them through
Nautilus results in being kicked to home directory.

CLI and fstab mounting works.

Essentially, Iomega NAS kills default Nautilus network browsing for any
user on the network.

[Bug 46081] Re: cifs is slow to read from, and choppy to write to, compared to smbfs

2009-04-15 Thread Jan Kovacik
I have Interpid box with RTL8169 chipped gigabit NIC from REPOTEC. When
I am copying from samba share to XP machine transfer speed is about
38MB/s, but when I try to copy file TO samba share, the transfer speed
is fluctuating between 500 KB and 8 MB/s.

However, I am able to copy four files simultaeously from my XP machine
with Raid 0 disks and they are being pumped to samba in same speed,
higher than one file alone :) , stable about 9MB/s It is interesting bug
and also long lasting I see.

So there is no other option than buy another crappy NIC? - i googled a
whole world to find any solution, but I found nothing :(

[Bug 361961] [NEW] dovecot not configured to listen to any ports after intrepid-jaunty upgrade

2009-04-15 Thread Steve Beattie
Public bug reported:

Performed a stock install of 8.10 ubuntu-server (i386) with the mail
server task selected and configured to be an internet with smarthost
relay. After fully updating with all intrepid updates and rebooting,
doing an upgrade to jaunty via do-release-upgrade -d resulted in dovecot
being configured with no protocols enabled. The upgrade did ask if I
wanted to use the maintainers version of dovecot.conf or use my not-

The result is a mail server that no longer provides pop3 or imap
service.

[Bug 361961] Re: dovecot not configured to listen to any ports after intrepid-jaunty upgrade

2009-04-15 Thread Mathias Gug
As steve confirmed, the maintainer version of dovecot.conf was chosen
during the upgrade. The default version of dovecot.conf shipped by the
dovecot-common package comes with no protocol enabled (protocols=none).

Since the end user is prompted for a configuration file change during
the upgrade process and can review the difference, I'll mark this bug
invalid.

** Changed in: dovecot (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Invalid
