After reviewing the changes between -3ubuntu7.4 and -3ubuntu7.5, I have
found that the problem is caused by the removal of the file
/lib/udev/rules.d/95-multipath.rules. In -3ubuntu7.4, it contained the
following:

RUN+="socket:/org/kernel/dm/multipath_event"

# Coalesce multipath devices before multipathd is running (initramfs, early
# boot)

If this file is manually reinstated (either to /lib/udev/rules.d or
/etc/udev/rules.d), boot is again successful (even with the latest
-3ubuntu7.9 multipath-tools package).

I see from the changelog that the removal was intentional:

  * debian/rules: don't ship 95-multipath.rules udev rules anymore; they are
not necessary with multipath-tools listening for udev events directly.
  * debian/multipath.udev: removed.

However, in order for this to actually work with multipath-backed "auto"
filesystems in /etc/fstab, it seems necessary to ensure that multipathd
is started before mountall runs. I am not entirely certain how to
accomplish this, though, as mountall is started from Upstart while
multipath-tools is stuck using a legacy SysV-init, and I do not know if
it is possible to enforce service ordering between the two init systems.
For what it's worth, renaming /etc/rcS.d/S21-multipath-tools-boot as
etc/rcS.d/S00-multipath-tools-boot does not work around the issue.

I know this seems like an odd bug, but I've spent all day chasing it
down.

I was seeing problems with LDAP lookups inside an LXC container, and
strace on getent lookups was showing that attempts to read from
/var/run/nslcd/socket were being closed as -1 (EACCESS).

That file/UNIX socket is owned by nslcd, also running inside the LXC.

Back on the host machine, setting the LXC config to set lxc.aa_profile =
unconfined (and restarting the container) then allowed that socket to
start working freely.

This seems weird, as there's all sorts of other things using UNIX
sockets inside containers that still function normally, but I thought
I'd mention it, especially in case anyone hits this issue.

I'm using lxc 1.0.7 from the stable PPA on precise.

When I use lxc-clone to copy a container running MAAS, which uses
hardlinks to manage images, each hardlinked file is created as a new
file in the cloned rootfs, increasing my file system size by hundreds of
GB's.

rsync is not using -H - just rsync -a.

Nothing LXC can do about it. An unprivileged container cannot have any
more right than the user which spawned it. Your user cannot  open that

We have a trusty host which has 9 trusty guests running under LXC.  On
the most recent reboot, 3 of the LXC processes crashed:

We were able to manually start them afterwards, but it's not clear why
they crashed on boot.

Each of those containers has identical software configurations to at
least one of the 6 containers that didn't crash on boot, so it appears
to be random.

We're running the 3.13.0-68-generic kernel and LXC 1.0.7-0ubuntu0.10.
All other packages are current.

Here is a sample config:

Since version 1.0.8 of the lxc package in trusty it appears that it's no
longer possible to create a container with a loop backing store.  To
reproduce the issue, install version 1.0.8-0ubuntu0.3 of the lxc,
liblxc1 and python3-lxc packages on trusty and run the following:

If I downgrade all the lxc packages to 1.0.7 on the same system it works
fine.  This issue is similar to what was reported in
https://lists.linuxcontainers.org/pipermail/lxc-
users/2015-September/010092.html but in that case the issue was
occurring when running with backport versions 1.1.3, 1.1.2 but again,
not with version 1.0.7.

[Bug 1547311] [NEW] Installing MAAS in Trusty fails to restart apache2 (traceback about the maas user when restarting apache2)

Public bug reported:

Installed a VM with 14.04.3, did a full dist-upgrade and then installed
maas from the Trusty repos.

Since no newer maas has been SRUd yet, 1.7.6 is the only MAAS available
to trusty unless you know about the PPAs.  So normal users would end up
with 1.7.6, not 1.9 by default.

Installed maas and the restart of Apache failed.  Looking in the apache error

Based on the changelog entries, I would guess that this was introduced
by the fix to CVE-2015-8619.

Requesting an FFe for this please. Lars has had a branch ready for a
while now, and we've already had one review round, but I haven't managed
to review again in time. I expect to get this uploaded in 1-3 weeks.

One complicating factor is that this will trigger a library transition
for libmysqlclient, and I know this is undesirable after FF. In
mitigation, upstream aren't expecting any API changes to cause breakage
- the ABI bump was to clean up unused symbols that shouldn't be
exported.

Upstream are working closely with us on this, and I am a DM for this
package in Debian.

Requesting a brief (1-3 week) FFe for this please. I have a merge ready,
but there is a transitional bug I want to fix. conffile renaming is
currently not working in some scenarios, which I believe also affects
Debian. It is complicated because of a migration in Debian of squid3 ->
squid which overlaps Ubuntu taking squid3 as default ahead of Debian in
the past, so there are overlapping package renames going on (crossing
the Ubuntu delta) as well as the conffile rename, which isn't working.

I'm still working on fixing this, and I'd prefer to land it when it's
ready rather than right now, because then I don't have to worry about
unsticking users caught by the current bug in another set of
transitional code.

I was delayed by what turned out to be a race condition affecting the
init.d script and system, where systemd cannot find a pid file before
the daemon has written it. A workaround for this is trivial (sleep 4 or
something), but I'd prefer not to land this without fixing it properly
either. But if the release team prefers an earlier landing to grant the
FFe, I can fix the first and leave the second worked around and fix it
properly afterwards. That would allow users to test the actual binaries
and functionality better.

I feel it's quite important to get squid to 3.5 in 16.04, as the current
version is quite out of date.

Why is a component mismatch critical?

Looks like the original reason Debian added the dependency is
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=797276. Which confuses
me. Doesn't the guard stop it running?

Pierre proposed http://paste.ubuntu.com/15111754/ which looks fine to
me, except that I want to make sure we don't reintroduce that Debian bug
which would make the package explode on postinst on Ubuntu by default.
Can someone check before uploading the fix, please?

After installing 'daemon' package, the different error would show up indicating 
that init.d script uses parameters

System information: Cisco UCS B200M2 blade, fnic.ko HBA. The system
boots from local storage, but mounts the following file system on an EMC
VNX during bootup:

/etc/fstab contains:

/dev/mapper/opt_vnx /opt/vnx ext4 noatime 0 2

After upgrading the "multipath-tools" package to version
0.4.9-3ubuntu7.5 or higher, the system can no longer boot without manual
intervention. Instead, the following question is asked (by mountall(8))
on the console:

The disk drive for /opt/vnx is not ready yet or not present.
keys:Continue to wait, or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery

Waiting does nothing useful. Pressing "S" allows the boot to run to
completion, and the "opt_vnx" *is* present when logging in to a
completely booted system. However, it seems that this is discovered
*after* the mountall(8) question appears and is skipped, as this log
line appears later on in the boot process:

 * Discovering and coalescing multipaths...
[ OK ]

Downgrading multipath-tools to version 0.4.9-3ubuntu7.4 does resolve the
problem, and allows the system to boot normally without manual
intervention. Note that the dependent "kpartx" package does *not* need
to be downgraded also, if this is left on version 0.4.9-3ubuntu7.9 it
will still boot fine.

We experience this problem on serveral other systems apart from the one
described in this bug report.

The xenial systemd would fail because there you must have libpam-cgfs
to get your own cgroups for lxc.  In wily iirc that should not be

This is a non-deterministic failure error in the installation attempts
on the package.  According to everything, nginx is currently running.

The only thing I can suggest is that you try and stop nginx first, then
try and load it again, and see if that resolves the issue... because it
appears that everything is actually 'running'...

sudo service nginx stop
sudo service nginx start

Update 2:3.21-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 in Precise bumps the epoch of the
package.

However, nss.pc contains:

Version: 2:3.21


This breaks detection of the version.

for example, NetworkManager's configure.ac has
PKG_CHECK_MODULES(NSS, [nss >= 3.11])


With this change, it results in a configure-failure:


checking for NSS... no
configure: error: Package requirements (nss >= 3.11) were not met:
Requested 'nss >= 3.11' but version of NSS is 2:3.21


For example Debian also has an epoch of #2, but nss.pc doesn't contain
the epoch there:

$ grep Version /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/pkgconfig/nss.pc
Version: 3.21

Juju 2.0 - this new command will install /usr/bin/charm (previously
managed by charm-tools 1.0.0 so this command will break charm-tools
1.0.0 and suggest charm-tools 2.0 (where charm-tools 2.0 will depend on
this charm command.

Since this is a new package not yet in the archive, and it's dependent
on changes in the Juju 2.0 FFe we request a Freeze Exception for this
package as we wait for Juju and charm-tools to be uploaded as well.

This tool adds:

 * Ability to publish charms to the charm store without needing a dvcs
 * A charmstore compatible search and query lookup
 * Managing a users assets in the Juju charm store

Looking into this further (thanks to Marc on the Security Team), it
looks like your system is trying to use the rsax OpenSSL engine, which
is not shipped in Ubuntu.

Can you provide all your nginx configurations, please, so we can see
whether this is the case or not?
