I have installed qemu-slof from trusty and ran again:

qemu-slof:

ubuntu@alpine01:~$ sudo apt-get install qemu-slof=20131015+dfsg-1ubuntu1

It froze on the exact same spot.

Yes. I only mounted (a different file) to troubleshoot what was going
on. The issue was happening before and after mounting. I have since
unmounted it.

qemu-system-ppc from cloud-archive:kilo. This repository is only
supported on trusty and contains an earlier version of qemu-system-ppc
than what is available on xenial.

[Bug 1379567] Re: maas-proxy is an open proxy with no ACLs; it should add networks automatically

2016-03-09 Thread Mike Pontillo
I agree with the concerns about documentation.

Currently, maas-proxy is an optional package which does not depend on
the MAAS region server (or any other MAAS component). It's analogous to
squid-deb-proxy.

The squid-deb-proxy approach to security is to ship (in an
autogenerated/ directory, which you are not supposed to edit) an
allowed-networks-src.acl file, which contains the RFC 1918 IPv4
addresses, and the link-local IPv6 addresses by default.

We could add an additional dependency on the MAAS region (or at least, a
URL to the MAAS region which allows us to figure out which networks are
attached to MAAS), and try to be smart about which networks to add. But
I'm not sure a solution that complex is worth the cost. For now, perhaps
it would be sufficient to take the same approach that squid-deb-proxy
uses, and then document how to ensure it's both secure, and able to
allow any additional desired networks.

[Bug 1379567] Re: maas-proxy is an open proxy with no ACLs; it should add networks automatically

2016-03-09 Thread Mike Pontillo
I've seen users complain that when we change this file it gets
overwritten automatically. (I guess we should also move it to /var, if
we're going to be automatically generating the configuration.)

Should every network MAAS knows about be included in the allow list? Or
is finer control needed?

[Bug 1554720] [NEW] Winbind maxing out CPU when AD user logs in with expired password

2016-03-08 Thread Mike
Public bug reported:

Hi,

My systems are Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS with samba/winbind 2:4.1.6+dfsg-
1ubuntu2.14.04.11

I am experiencing issues as described in this Samba bug:
https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11038 which is entitled
'Logging with an account which has the "User must change password on
next logon" flag cause winbindd to use 100% cpu and stop answering
request'.

Jeremy Allison marked this as a blocker bug with the comment "We must
not ship another Samba release with this bug unfixed".

The bug appears to have been fixed in Samba 4.2 and 4.3 releases, but
not in 4.1. Is there any plan to port this bug fix into releases
available on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS?

Mike

Ah, I just realized that you are running Xenial.

The best-supported way to run MAAS at this time is to run it on Trusty.
We won't have a Xenial compatible MAAS release until Xenial itself
releases.

It's strange that you would hit this error. We should be able to import
is_validator; I can see that formencode has been installed. Can you
paste the output of these commands into the bug (my example output shown
for comparison):

$ python -c "from formencode import validators"
$ python -c "import formencode; print(formencode.__file__)"
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/formencode/__init__.pyc
$ dpkg -S /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/formencode/validators.py
python-formencode: /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/formencode/validators.py
$ dpkg -S $(python -c "import formencode;
print(formencode.__file__.replace('.pyc', '.py'))")

I will work on the squeeze-lts / precise patch first and test that. If
that works well, I will forward-port the change to current HEAD.

Hmmm... ok...

I just checked upstream Git and the location you refer to is not using
safe_mount either there [1]

Furthermore, it seems non-trivial to inform safe_mount about the root
path from within lxc_init.c.

Do you have any input on the following questions?:

o Why mount_fs() in latest HEAD still using the mount() call
instead of safe_mount()?
o How could one pipe the rootfs path into lxc_setup_fs() -> mount_fs()?

Thanks for any input.

@Serge, A workaround for me is to use "hypervisor default" in virt-
manager. I'm not sure what the equivalent is in virt-install, but maybe
using --cpu=host-model-only would be a workaround?

Expose the host CPUs configuration to the guest. This enables
the guest to take advantage of many
of the host CPUs features (better performance), but may cause
issues if migrating the guest to a

   --cpu host-model-only
Expose the nearest host CPU model configuration to the guest.
It is the best CPU which can be

2015-12-09 Thread Mike Pontillo
On my Trusty VM with "[x] Copy host CPU configuration" checked in virt-
manager, running 'sudo modprobe -r raid6_pq && sudo modprobe raid6_pq'
is enough to reproduce the kernel exception in dmesg (though I didn't
see it print "Segmentation Fault", so that may be somewhat of a red
herring).

Here's /proc/cpuinfo on the guest:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/13868715/

And here's /proc/cpuinfo on the hypervisor host:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/13868744/

I have a separate issue (which I have not filed, because I haven't
triaged, and am not sure I can reproduce yet) that was blocking me from
creating a Xenial guest, but I can try again shortly.

2015-12-08 Thread Mike Pontillo
I just tried again with two logical CPUs and the core set to "Westmere"
(I think that was the default), and didn't see the bug. So this seems
related specifically to "[x] Copy host CPU configuration" being checked.
Here's the /proc/cpuinfo from the "virtual Westmere" where it works:

[Bug 1476662] Re: lxc-start symlink vulnerabilities may allow guest to read host filesystem, interfere with apparmor

2015-12-04 Thread Mike Gabriel
Hi all,

today I worked on backporting available fixes for CVE-2015-1335 to LXC
0.7.x (as found in Debian squeeze-lts).

The patch is attached, I am still in the testing-for-regressions phase.
Can any of the LXC devs take a look at the patch and maybe see if it is
suitable for Ubuntu 12.04, as well?

Greets,

2015-12-01 Thread Mike Pontillo
I can confirm that I have replicated the issue in my local MAAS test
bed.

I'm seeing behavior such as this:

$ maas admin device claim-sticky-ip-address
node-ad58adcc-980a-11e5-a692-525400130e6f
Success.
Machine-readable output follows:

}
],
"zone": {
"resource_uri": "/MAAS/api/1.0/zones/default/",

"resource_uri":
"/MAAS/api/1.0/devices/node-ad58adcc-980a-11e5-a692-525400130e6f/"

I would expect to see some ip_addresses here, but we've got nothing.

I'm still working on the root cause.

[Bug 1266840] Re: maas-dns failed to install completely on Trusty

2015-11-10 Thread Mike Pontillo
As Jeff said, I believe this is fixed in MAAS 1.7.

I worked on a related race condition having to do with migrating MAAS-
managed BIND variables to the MAAS database.

If you are installing MAAS on a machine which will *not* host the MAAS
database, there is still somewhat of a race condition, in that we cannot
fully migrate the BIND configuration to the MAAS database unless the
database is up and running.

On MAAS 1.7, if you hit this situation, you can run:

sudo maas-region-admin edit_named_options --migrate-conflicting-options

This will rewrite the BIND configuration to ensure that MAAS does not
duplicate any BIND options (which would result in the symptom above:
BIND failing to start).

[Bug 1509414] [NEW] lxc postinst script checks available interfaces, can choose

2015-10-23 Thread Mike McCracken
Public bug reported:

The released wily image preinstalls lxc, which breaks the assumption
that lxc's preinst packaging script makes:

It inspects the network to try to pick a 10.0.N.0 network that isn't
being used, with N starting at 3, so this appears to have picked
10.0.3.0 when it was installed on whatever system was generating the
image. This conflicts with the network that eth0 gets attached to when
the image is brought up in a container, because it gets attached to the
host's lxcbr0, which is using 10.0.3.x.

This affects LXC, and should affect LXD but doesn't currently. (see #2)
The easiest way to reproduce this is to use the ubuntu-cloud lxc template on a
wily host:

sudo lxc-create -t ubuntu-cloud -n wily
sudo lxc-start -n wily
sudo lxc-attach -n wily
# inside container, test connectivity, eg:
apt-get update

** Affects: lxc (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Confirmed

[Bug 1503034] Re: Autofs 5.1.1-1ubuntu2 crashes with segfault on startup

2015-10-23 Thread Mike Dunphy
Unfortunately I just rolled 20 servers to 15.10 and this bug bit me big time.
Is there a workaround or estimate when
complete or do I need to roll back to 15.04. Is it possible to just install the
autofs from the 15.04 distro ?

[Bug 1500683] Re: By default DNSSEC is enabled with automatic keys

2015-10-07 Thread Mike Pontillo
Yes, that seems to be the argument. I would like to understand why it
seems to be that many environments are set up with a forwarder that does
not support DNSSEC. (is this by choice? is it a particular vendor, or
old DNS server which does not forward the queries properly?
misconfigured firewall rules?)

There are three possible values for the BIND dnssec-validation option:
'yes', 'no', and 'auto'.

By saying "enabled with automatic keys", we just mean the default value
of "dnssec-validation auto;" in the BIND configuration file.

[Bug 1500683] Re: DNSSEC should be disabled in MAAS by default

2015-09-29 Thread Mike Pontillo
Adding the `bind` package. MAAS simply uses the value from the BIND
configuration files in order to determine what to configure in MAAS. So
this cannot change in MAAS unless a decision is made in BIND, or the
value is left out of the configuration file by default, allowing MAAS to
make its own decision.

[Bug 1319600] Re: maas-cli stack trace if .maascli.db unreadable

2015-09-28 Thread Mike Pontillo
I think the bug here is that we display an unwieldy stack trace rather
than a nice error message.

Running "sudo maas " may cause this bug to occur, since the
~/.maascli.db will be created by the root user, rather than the
currently-logged-in user.

[Bug 1485785] [NEW] simplestreams in trusty ignores http 403 when downloading imag

2015-08-17 Thread Mike McCracken
Public bug reported:

a recent bug in the cloud-images service caused the metadata to have an
incorrect path, which meant that simplestreams got a 403 when requesting an
image. However it swallowed that error and apparently uploaded 384 bytes of
something, possibly an error HTML page, as the new image to a user's glance
store, when used as part of the glance-simplestreams-sync charm.

Here's an edited bit of log from http://paste.ubuntu.com/12112343/ (this
snippet starts at line 2303 in there)

First we see they have a real 20150810 image, size=258343424.

[Bug 1468897] Re: multipath creates binding for Removable(USB) drives

Updated information. It seems the issue only comes about with USB 3.0

detection.

dmesg output from inserting a USB 3.0 device and then a USB 3.0 device.

[Bug 1413388] Re: [SRU] upgrade of MAAS removes local config for bind and breaks DNS

2015-07-14 Thread Mike Pontillo
I tested by installing bind9 on Trusty, then installing maas
1.7.6+bzr3376-0ubuntu2~14.04.1.

I verified that the forwarders were properly migrated to the MAAS
configuration, as long as at least one cluster interface was set to be
managing DNS.

The forwarders are migrated into the MAAS database, and values such as
allow-query, allow-recursion, and allow-query-cache (which MAAS had
previously always written into
/etc/bind/maas/named.conf.options.inside.maas) are now only written if
the values are not already present in /etc/bind/named.conf.options.

Hopefully this solves the issue for everyone.

[Bug 1381537] Re: Dovecot version in precise too old to switch off SSLv3 protocol for poodle fix

2015-07-11 Thread Mike Threesi
OK, I hate to be so stupid, but I need some help and can't seem to
locate anyone knowledgeable so far:

In 10-ssl.conf I added: ssl_protocols = !SSLv2 !SSLv3 (to no avail so i
think I am not patched)

Would appreciate some helpful comments / guidance please...

I did a fresh install of 12.04.5 on another machine, thinking that there
had been a patch for dovecot, but I am still getting this error, so I
assume it is not patched in 12.04.5 ? Or how do I get the patch
installed?

This accepts the login: `openssl s_client -connect localhost:993 -ssl3`

This gives an error: `openssl s_client -connect localhost:465 -ssl3`
139852816377504:error:1409E0E5:SSL routines:SSL3_WRITE_BYTES:ssl
handshake failure:s3_pkt.c:59

This too gives an error: `openssl s_client -connect localhost:25 -ssl3`
140205816501920:error:1408F10B:SSL routines:SSL3_GET_RECORD:wrong
version number:s3_pkt.c:339

So if I go to a poodle website and check, they return OK for Poodle
EXCEPT for 993 port, do you know what I am doing wrong?

BTW, these are the exact results from my long running 12.04.4 ubuntu,
and we need to stay on 12.04 for now.

Throw me a bone, please - give me some detailed instructions of how I
can fix this, thank you. My goal is to have port 25, 587, 465, 993, etc
all !SSLv3 compliant.

Thank you

[Bug 1470149] [NEW] uvt-kvm wait --insecure fails on systemd-using guests

[Bug 1468897] [NEW] multipath creates binding for Removable(USB) drives

2015-06-25 Thread Mike Rushton
Public bug reported:

On a system with a multipath configuration, multipath bindings are being
created for removable(USB) drives rendering them inaccessible as normal
removable drives.

in this case, the usb drive is detected as /dev/sdi:

# lsblk|grep -A2 sdi

Upon trying to format /dev/sdi1:

/dev/sdi1 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here!

[Bug 1468897] Re: multipath creates binding for Removable(USB) drives

2015-06-25 Thread Mike Rushton
After following this post: https://www.redhat.com/archives/dm-
devel/2008-September/msg00235.html

I have prepended the following to /lib/udev/rules.d/95-multipath.rules:

#Weed out the linear map.
KERNEL==dm-*, PROGRAM==/sbin/dmsetup table -j %M -m %m, RESULT==*linear*,
OPTIONS=last_rule

# And block devices that come from usb:
ACTION==add, KERNEL==sd*, SUBSYSTEM==usb, OPTIONS=last_rule

This prevents /dev/sdi from showing up under lsblk completely and is now
missing as a block device completely:

$ ls /dev/sdi*
ls: cannot access /dev/sdi*: No such file or directory

I think this is some progress, but not working as intended yet.

[Bug 1246236] Re: pxe boot from maas fails due to time out

2015-04-08 Thread Mike Pontillo
I hit this problem today, and it turned out to be a non-MAAS bug.

I was trying to configure a Trusty host with VMware Workstation *and*
LXCs sharing the same network.

It turns out that the combination of VMware plus Linux bridge interfaces
have a bug: if I set up the VM network to be bridged to br0, I can ping
hosts on the local network, and I can ping the Linux hypervisor, and I
can ping any of the LXCs. I can even DHCP from the LXCs. But I *can't*
establish any TCP connections to the LXCs from the VMware guest.

My current theory is that somehow the bridge interface is causing
packets sentto the LXC from the VMware guest to be discarded at a low
level, rather than sent up the stack. I couldn't find any IP Because
when I configure VMware to bridge to a physical interface rather than a
virtual bridge, it works. Until I disconnect the physical interface.

So the bottom line for me was:
(1) Have VMware bridge to the physical interface (in my case, it was eth0.100,
a VLAN interface) if you want to use bridged mode
(2) Use a host-only network (without DHCP, so MAAS can do its thing!) if you
want to develop in isolation, without sharing the network with the local LAN
 - Do NOT bridge VMware to a bridge created with 'brctl' or similar!

I added the VMware bridge interface (vmnet1) to the br0 interface I'm
using for my MAAS LXC, which may get me the best of both. I'll continue
to test this configuration.

[Bug 1044559] Re: apt-get remove maas --purge while maas is running prevents full database purge

2015-04-07 Thread Mike Pontillo
I attempted to fix this, but haven't gotten anywhere. I am seeing the
following errors:

Removing maas-region-controller (1.8.0~beta2+bzr3777-0ubuntu1) ...
 * Stopping web server apache2

dropping database maasdb: does not exist.
dbconfig-common: revoking privileges for user maas on maasdb.
revoking access to database maasdb from maas@localhost: failed.

However, I found a workaround:

$ sudo -u postgres dropdb maasdb

You can verify that the maasdb database has been dropped by executing:

$ sudo -u postgres psql

I tried adding sudo -u postgres dropdb maasdb to the postrm packaging
script for maas-region-controller, but that didn't make a difference.

I just saw this one again. I found a relevant discussion here:

https://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/dbconfig-common-

Here's the relevant quote from Sean Finney (the maintainer of dbconfig-
common):

i can reproduce your problem... looking in my postgres logs i see:

ERROR: database zabbix is being accessed by other users
ERROR: role zabbix cannot be dropped because some objects depend on
it

i think this is because the zabbix server has the datbase open while the
removal code is running in the prerm script. if you manually stop the
zabbix server before purging i think you'll see what i'm talking about.

as for how to workaround this... you could manually stop the server
before calling dbc_go when $1 is set to remove, or you could call the
dbconfig hooks after the #DEBHELPER# macro.

since this could be a general problem with other pgsql+daemon packages,
i'd appreciate suggestions for how to mention this in documentation,
assuming this solves your problem :)

Reply from Michael Ablassmeier:

yes, moving the stanza in prerm above the dbconfig-common call works
nicely and the package successfully purges its database setup. Thanks
for your time! (having a short note somewhere in the Docs might be
helpful since i've discovered the same problem for the mysql part of the
package, even tho mysql doesnt care about it that much)

Thank you for the suggestions Gary. I realized that my problem is caused
by the router firmware. Basically, they introduced loopback blocking and
I couldn't connect from the same network even using the external IP.

I just saw this exact behavior while using a 1.8.0 development package
on Trusty. Not sure what the correct process to reopen a bug is, but I
think this either wasn't fully fixed, or there has been a regression.

[Bug 708493] Re: Can't login anymore: Read from socket failed: Connection reset by peer

2015-02-20 Thread Mike
Hello,
Not sure it is the same problem here, but I cannot connect to my machine if go
through NAT.
If I connect directly from LAN everything works, but if I use the external IP,
then I get connection reset after debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT sent.

Client and server is the same machine. I tried to set MTU to 1400 and
400 with no effect, also changed the net.ipv4.tcp_rmem setting and tried
different cipher algorithms with no luck.

The above patch is what I'm running locally against Icehouse. It does
not seem that complicated, unless I am missing something major. I did
briefly look at the cherry-pick, and that is quite a bit different. The
the above is working well for us.

[Bug 1252467] Re: /etc/cron.d/awstats: wrong user for cron job

2014-11-19 Thread Mike Robinson
Either running the cron job as root or allowing www-data to read the
apache log files are bad ideas. Instead you want to create a new user
and add it to the www-data and adm groups and make the cron job execute
as that user. I called mine awstats:

useradd awstats usermod -a -G www-data awstats usermod -a -G adm
awstats

Seems to work like a charm.

[Bug 1387002] [NEW] typo in maas-region-controller.postrm stops remove/purge from correctly calling dbconfig

2014-10-29 Thread Mike McCracken
Public bug reported:

line 9 of maas-region-controller.postrm tests for the existence of '/etc
/dbconfig-common/maas.conf', which will not exist. the file that gets
created is instead maas-region-controller.conf. since that test is never
true, the call to dbc_go to do the postrm.pgsql stuff never happens.

This appears to contribute to some flakiness involving purging and
reinstalling maas.

On one server that I'm currently having difficulty with, I had a /etc
/dbconfig-common/maas-region-controller.conf that was two months (and
several maas versions) old, despite having purged several times.

I think this is related to the error messages I was seeing when purging,
including errors about wrong password for user maas. The
local_settings.py I saw had a password of 'maas', but that .conf file
had a different password.

Unfortunately, while this appears to be a legitimate typo bug, manually
fixing it and re-running the purge did not fix my problems:

It went from (struct sk_buff *skb, struct dst_entry *dst, struct sock

Unfortunately I don't know enough about openvswitch internals to change
the call, but the calls are made in datapath/tunnel.c starting line

[Bug 1307473] Re: guest hang due to missing clock interrupt

I need to amend comment #39, moving from 3.13.0-30 to 3.13.0-27 did not

following a reboot for the symptoms to manifest with 3.13.0-27.

[Bug 1307473] Re: guest hang due to missing clock interrupt

2014-07-11 Thread Mike Lowe
I believe I have the same problem, place a guest under any amount of
load, let's say 'yum upgrade' and the network stack goes out to lunch
for 1-5 seconds. Here is a sample of the ping statistics (host to
guest) from doing such an operation on a 3.13.0-30.55 kernel:

213 packets transmitted, 213 received, 0% packet loss, time 211998ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.136/106.283/2651.359/428.403 ms, pipe 3

And a 3.11.0-19.33 kernel:

62 packets transmitted, 62 received, 0% packet loss, time 61074ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.189/0.434/1.987/0.228 ms

[Bug 1340983] [NEW] GlanceMirror class does not expose progress update callbacks

2014-07-11 Thread Mike McCracken
Public bug reported:

The GlanceMirror class has no callback to provide progress updates on
image downloads. OS images are often large enough (and you may be
syncing several images) that this presents a serious UX problem during
which a user (or client program) of simplestreams will not be able to
tell that anything is happening.

The attached diff exposes progress update callbacks with a minimum of
changes to existing program logic. The GlanceMirror class gets a basic
callback, and calling code is expected to handle figuring out what
images will be downloaded and their size before calling
GlanceMirror.sync(). In order to help with this, a separate class
ItemInfoDryRunMirror is added, to make use of the same filter logic
that GlanceMirror will use but instead just collect a list of images
to download and their size.

Since this is provided as optional keyword arguments, existing users
will not be affected.

[Test Case]

From the source tree top directory,

PYTHONPATH=. tools/sstream-mirror-glance --max=1 -v -v -v --output-dir \
images/ --cloud-name test_cloud --content-id test_content \
--keyring /usr/share/keyrings/ubuntu-cloudimage-keyring.gpg \
http://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/releases/ streams/v1/index.json

And verify that it prints status updates to stdout. The
sstream-mirror-glance tool has been updated to use the new api in
GlanceMirror.

[Regression Potential]

This has limited regression potential, because the new functionality
is provided as optional arguments. If anything is running the
sstream-mirror-glance script and parsing its output, that may break,
but that seems very unlikely because that script does not currently
produce anything useful to parse.

[Bug 1339842] [NEW] GlanceMirror item filters are hardcoded

2014-07-09 Thread Mike McCracken
Public bug reported:

The GlanceMirror class has a hard-coded filter for items to be
downloaded.

Anyone using it directly or via the script in
tools/sstream-mirror-glance to load images into an openstack cloud
will end up with a large number of images, at least one for each of
the available release series, and only x86_64 or amd64.

It is likely that users will want to be able to limit the images they
download to just one release, and may want to be able to download
images for other architectures, such as arm*.

The uploaded package simply exposes the existing filter mechanism as a
config option, using the previous hardcoded values as defaults.

This config option is used (currently it is just ignored by the
published simplestreams code) in an charm that is released on the
charm store for trusty, 'glance-simplestreams-sync'. Users of
OpenStack on Trusty are likely to want the option to control image
downloads via that charm.

[Test Case]

In an openstack cloud, with proper openstack env vars (OS_USERNAME,
OS_PASSWORD, OS_REGION etc), run the sstream-mirror-glance tool to

from the source tree top directory,

PYTHONPATH=. tools/sstream-mirror-glance --max=1 -v -v -v --output-dir \
images/ --cloud-name test_cloud --content-id test_content \
--keyring /usr/share/keyrings/ubuntu-cloudimage-keyring.gpg \
http://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/releases/ streams/v1/index.json

verify that it downloads many images. This may take a while. If you
like, you can just check that it will download an image for an old
series like raring or quantal.

Clean up after it by removing the images/ directory.

Then with the update applied, from the source tree top dir:

PYTHONPATH=. tools/sstream-mirror-glance --max=1 -v -v -v --output-dir \
images/ --cloud-name test_cloud --content-id test_content \
--keyring /usr/share/keyrings/ubuntu-cloudimage-keyring.gpg \
--item-filter=release=trusty --item-filter=arch=arm64 \
http://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/releases/ streams/v1/index.json

and verify that it downloads only one matching image, trusty on arm64.

[Regression Potential]

This has very limited regression potential, because anyone relying on
the existing behavior will still get it because the previous behavior
is retained via defaults.
