[Bug 1741113] Re: package samba 2:4.3.11+dfsg-0ubuntu0.16.04.12 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Your /var/log/samba/cores directory is owned by user "ats", not root. The same goes for the inner nmbd and smbd directories. Please change that by running this command: sudo chown root /var/log/samba/cores /var/log/samba/cores/* And then try the systemctl restart command from earlier again. --

Thanks, but you didn't attach the log files from /var/log/samba/ for this last attempt at starting the services. Or was there nothing new in there? That being said, I saw this snippet from nmbd: Jan 10 06:08:16 ats-pc nmbd[1085]: Failed to create /var/log/samba/cores for user 0 with mode 0700

None of the log files correspond to the failure you had yesterday (Jan 4th, 2018). Please show the output of these commands: sudo systemctl status smbd nmbd winbind samba-ad-service sudo systemctl restart smbd nmbd Also please attach /var/log/syslog, and if something new was logged to

Thanks for filing this bug in Ubuntu. The logs you attached confirm that the smbd service failed to start, but do not state the reason. This would be in the more detailed logs in /var/log/samba/log*. Could you please attach the log files from /var/log/samba? Thanks! ** Changed in: samba
