I have a similar situation upon upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10 today. In
my case, I was using -cpu pentium3. -no-kvm is also my workaround. My
host is a 32-bit Intel VT host rather than 64-bit.

Pardon me. Of course I mean that my host *kernel* is 32-bit (i686). My
physical host processor is 64-bit (P8400). In my case, I needed to
enable the VT extensions in my BIOS, and it was working well in 9.04.

Anything showing up in /var/log/syslog when you try to start samba
manually (sudo /etc/init.d/samba start) ?
Try purging to see if it goes better:
$ sudo cp /etc/samba/smb.conf ~/smb.conf.backup
$ sudo apt-get purge samba-common samba
$ sudo apt-get install samba
Does samba start ? If yes:
$ sudo
