Hello everyone, A few more OTA-12 targeted landings today, with a new telephony-service for proper handling of middle names of contacts and a big mir 0.23 stack landing - this one carrying multiple bugfixes and performance improvements. The AltGr [1] bug that's haunting most non-EN hardware keyboard users has been scheduled for 0.24 and 0.23.1 point-release (so still for this update). Another landing should be ready for release soon is a new account-plugins adding support for Owncloud and VKontakte accounts, currently rebuilding for yakkety as a triple-landing - but otherwise already signed off by QA. But for now that's it. Still lots of things planned for OTA-12 [2] - but we're getting there. Hello everyone, OTA-12 landing velocity still rather low, with only a new bugfix release of ubuntu-ui-toolkit and a cherry-pick crasher fix for lxc. Our developers are currently busy with either pending features such as the fingerprint reader or helping out in our xenial-targeted initiative. Since we have reverted the 'lxc revert' from the xenial-overlay, currently our staging images are once again unbootable - but hopefully this week we should get some progress on getting the android container working again (with the new lxc). But well, that's xenial-related so more of a thing for the future. Let's see how many of the planned OTA-12 goodies will be landed by final freeze. Hello everyone, More exciting landings today as we're slowly nearing to String Freeze for OTA-12: a new sync-monitor, new webbrowser-app (UITK now handling enter/space key-presses for list item activation), a new bugfix release of ubuntu-ui-toolkit, a bugfix for content-hub (sharing from webbrowser now includes the page title + the URL), new camera-app, gallery-app and ubuntu-ui-extras, new ubuntu-themes with idle, inactive and active states of the location indicator, a new location-service (exporting service state information), new indicator-location with visual feedback when location-service is used by apps/scopes and finally a new media-hub (enabling some metadata via MPRIS over DBus). From pending landings we have a new unity8 landing that makes the dash run confined. We'll talk more about it once it lands somewhere around tomorrow. As for frieza and cooler daily builds, we suspect we should be able to resume those around tomorrow as well. We'll keep everyone informed about what changed once it's done. Hello everyone! Due to a number of regressions in our current images and a few important landings still missing, we have decided to move Final Freeze one week later - meaning: to this Friday. Good news is that the recent phone-not-booting on first boot bug on rc-proposed just had its fix landed. Only a few more changes (color emoji seed changes, updated custom tarballs etc.) and we should be good for OTA-12 testing. The only worrying thing left will be the emulator state, as we want to block the release in case we have no functional emulator images. From other news: frieza rc-proposed builds have been finally unblocked with the required custom tarball landing in release. One thing left to do is seamlessly migrating turbo users from meizu.en to the new libertine-enabled meizu-pd.en channel, which should happen somewhere around tomorrow. Hello everyone! As per our earlier announcement OTA-12 is out and in phasing. We're currently at around 72% phased percentage so in this speed everyone should get the update notification in the nearest hours. A small reminder: turbo users do not require any additional manual steps to get the new update - no channel switches are required. As mentioned a few weeks back we now have a per-device redirect set that moves transparently turbo users from meizu.en to meizu-pd.en. No manual steps are needed. In the meantime we're concentrating on OTA-13, with a new libertine-scope landing in the overlay with build-system improvements and a visual rename of the scope itself to "Desktop Apps". This week CI Train gets more changes from Robert, with another set of jobs dropped off jenkins to bileto - this time the status job. Hello everyone! Some bad news today regarding OTA-12: unexpectedly we will have to delay the release by one week again. Due to some internal reasons the final testing still needs one week to finish, meaning an official release next week on Wednesday (27th). All pieces are in place and almost ready for release but sadly we cannot until this one more formal step is finished. Apologies about the short notice - I just learned about it recently myself. But no worries, it will come as soon as possible. We will keep everyone up-to-date. In the meantime our OTA-13 landings continue. Today we only had two landings: a cross-build fix for ubuntu-ui-extras and a new address-book-app fixing screen-rotation breaking sim-contact imports. As for our plans for OTA-13. First bigger change in the next update is the introduction of the new power management daemon implementation - repowerd. Hello everyone, OTA-12 testing continues. We had some scare moments as QA thought they have found a new regression in our current release candidate for frieza - but it seems the same problems were also visible in our previous stable version and is not as serious as we originally though [1]. Since we're now aware of the issue, this will land on a priority-fix list for the next milestone. We also finalized the required cdimage changes for our separate re-spin only project. This is more of an infrastructure change that will basically allow us to do image re-spins from snapshots seamlessly without interrupting the usual rc-proposed workflow. Hello everyone, Some more landings today: started off with a new ofono release, then the follow-up UX changes to indicator-keyboard (title property and a fallback icon when no layout is configured), ubuntuone-credentials with autopkgtest workarounds and finally an ubuntu-touch-meta upload that adds indicator-keyboard (and the missing account-plugin-owncloud) to the touch images. The next rc-proposed image should have the new indicator present. Today we also finally promoted OTA-12 emulator images to the stable channel! For now only the generic_x86 device - the one that's to be most likely used by developers. But the rest will follow soon. There might be some issues on first boot after emulator creation so an emulator-reboot might be required, but besides that it should be good enough for basic testing usage. Hello everyone, More landings with OTA-13 development proceeding steadily: we had a bugfix for libsignon-glib, a new maliit-framework with a proper fix for accented characters (hopefully now should be working on both xmir and touch apps), a new sync-monitor (multi-protocols sync support) followed by account-polld and account-plugins (update of the owncloud login screen). Looking good so far. Today we also promoted all generic emulator images to all stable channels. Those are, of course, painfully slow (as they're arm-based) so we anyway recommend using generic_x86 for testing purposes. But with this OTA-12 has now been officially released to all of our supported devices - even the emulators. Also, it might be a good thing to remind everyone about something here: our current touch system baseline is still vivid - but with an incoming switch to xenial in the nearest future. There is no real touch development work happening on yakkety - more also because our touch images are still using upstart. There are no plans for us switching to yakkety so we any yakkety-based images are most likely to be broken. We recommend using our vivid (stable, rc, rc-proposed) channels for any touch-related development for now. Hello everyone! Today was rather quiet with only one new touch package release: the lxc-android-config emulator networking fix. This will be followed by an emulator re-spin as mentioned in our earlier e-mails (and, hopefully, a new emulator stable promotion). We also wanted to land a new Unity8 for keyboard indicator enablement today but this has been postponed by a spotted last-minute regression. We hope to have it released tomorrow. This week is Feature Freeze week for OTA-13. Next week only bugfixes will be allowed to land until Final Freeze. Hello everyone! Apologies for the missing yesterday's daily e-mail - this was due to a system failure on my side. After I got things working again there was simply no time to bring you the news. And this time there's some news to be shared, as a lot of good landings have been processed in the meantime. It all started off with the new release of mir (0.24) with multiple fixes and enhancements (huge list, some of which are: trust prompt fix for camera, AltGr final fixes, mouse phantom edge fix, rotation issues and more), followed by a new ubuntu-ui-toolkit with some small visual changes and a lot of bugfixes, new libertine, backports of new versions of libhybris and gstreamer, new oxide-qt 1.16.8 (most notably with the camera orientation fix for frieza/cooler), a new release of ubuntu-download-manager (QML api additions, segfault fix), a rewrite of the system update panel in ubuntu-system-settings and, finally, a new xorg-server fixing a bug of some unclickable buttons after screen rotation. Phew. We will drag out the freeze for OTA-13 till next week though as we would still like to get copy-paste-legacy-apps support - as it's a very important feature we'd like to ship with this update. From other good news: yakkety-proposed might soon be unblocked. If all goes well we might re-enable regular CI Train silo publishing on Monday. So a few minutes after me sending this daily e-mail Qt5 finally moved from the -proposed pocked in yakkety and most of our touch packages migrated! Hello everyone, A rather quiet day so far, with only a buteo-sync-plugins-contacts packaging fix and bugfixing landing of qtdeclarative-opensource-src (fickable width/height ratio and relative mouse event fixes). We're also battling with some package migration problems in yakkety (with Timo leading the main migration-fixing effort). Since most of our package releases are so-called triple landings (meaning: when we release something it's released simultaneously to vivid-overlay, xenial-overlay and yakkety), packages being unable to migrate from proposed to the release pocket in yakkety causes quite some chaos as changes cannot be merged to trunk - and, because of that, development is hindered down. All this because of the ongoing transitions in yakkety. Let's hope it stabilizes soon. Because of that some of the features we wanted for OTA-13 got slightly delayed. To make sure we have everything in place, we need to move the OTA-13 release date by a week. This gives us one week more for features and bugfixes. Meaning, the ETA for the update will now be the 7th of September. In the meantime, we're in the middle of re-spinning OTA-12 emulator images. Hello everyone! Feeling a bit under the weather today, but hopefully after a nights rest I'll get over this slight ubu-flu [1] that's currently bothering me. Only a few landings so far, we're still waiting for copy-paste to get into the QA queue. It's certainly taking much longer than expected though - but it's always hard to estimate how much work is actually needed. Anyway, today we had a new unity8 fixing screenshot sound emission, media-hub apparmor changes (mainly for xenial) and a new ubuntu-system-settings with fixes to the new updates panel. We're also waiting for a sync-monitor landing that would generally enable translations for this project as those are currently missing. Be sure to keep an eye out on our translation series [2] and submitting translations for strings in your native language - we're really grateful for help! Hello everyone, Another rather quiet day today. We landed 2 packages to the overlay so far: a new upstream release of signon (some minor fixes and code cleanup + finally dropping Qt4 support) and a new livecd-rootfs hint-fix to possibly finally fix new emulator builds (yesterday's packaging fixes were not enough). In the QA queue there's also a new ubuntu-system-settings-online-accounts (with a fix for an empty-page display issue when clients request existing accounts), but other than that nothing else is ready. Multiple teams are busy with yakkety desktop work now as we're slowly nearing the final release date. Around next week I plan to finally work on a possible short guideline to help out those that would like to contribute to our core touch components, since it might be a bit vague as to where to look for code and how to submit fixes. This of course depends how busy next week will be, but I guess this could be a nice thing to have. Possibly. Hello everyone, With QA busy on the sprint, not much can actually land - so expect the nearest few rc-proposed images no-change rebuilds. As you can see, not only the audience is frozen - our landings as well. So far in the testing queue we have the fix for screen-suspend on first boot apparmor profile recompile and a new ubuntu-ui-toolkit. An unity8 landing is also nearing, but the silo seems to have been invalidated by some new commits coming in - now requiring a rebuild. In the meantime, remember: `sudo snap install landing-team-tools`. Hello everyone, Intense sprint times here in the Hague. Only now I found a moment to bring you some landing news. Not much going on though, with everyone busy discussing the future plans and milestones for the nearing zesty series (and snappification of the world too!). Throughout the recent days there were sadly no real landings besides the auto-uploads of language packs. One of the issues that blocked us today in this regard, partially, was the preparation of the zesty series. The switch to use it in the triple landings came a bit too soon, even before we could actually build packages for the series in our silo PPAs. This is now fixed and good, although publishing to zesty is still not really possible as the archive is closed - and besides, we first need to do a batch binary copy of all yakkety-overlay packages there as well before real releases can happen (so maybe tomorrow?) There are changes coming to the infrastructure as well. We might announce some things later this week once all is cleared out. Hello everyone! Finally a moment of peace for a quick landing e-mail. In the last few days there was not much going on though, with only a new ubuntu-download-manager fixing a crash when trying to save and download images through the webbrowser. Maybe we'll have more landings starting next week. As for OTA-14 - so far so good, with the candidate images entering final testing. That being said, due to the current schedule and timing we'll have to wait till end of next week for these to finish. This means that the current ETA for the new update is the 5-6th of December (approximately). The good news is: this should possibly be the final date as the images passed all the earlier tests without any critical regressions. But well, you never know! Hello everyone! First 'working' OTA-14 candidate image has been built and uploaded to the rc channels today. Those of you that have been affected by the rc channel being broken should now be able to re-flash or upgrade to get a booting device once again. The images have still not been tested though - I only managed to check if the graphical shell is starting this time. QA will pick it up from there. The bad news is that we still don't have a 'releasable' oxide 1.18 and most likely we'll just have to go with 1.17 for OTA-14 - which also has many good fixes (a bunch of security ones too). Multiple landings in the meantime, although not many that would carry user visible changes. One worth mentioning was a new address-book-app yesterday which introduced improvements to the application's startup time. Since Tuesday we had two silos landing so far: first is a new webbrowser-app with startup time improvements (+ other optimizations), change to make re-opening a tab now reloading it, fixes for drag'n'drop of bookmarks, fix for close button overlapping other tabs when there are many tabs opened + many many more. The second was an online-accounts landing to drop the usage of the GetConnectionAppArmorSecurityContext method - but not much user visible changes here. Hello everyone! Today only two new landings so far: a new address-book-service with a crasher fix and a fix for switching a day-only event to a daily one in qtorganizer5-eds. There will also be a calendar-app release to the store following up for the latter. In the queue we still have the new oxide and the final part of the screen-turn-off on boot during apparmor profile recompile fix (in ubuntu-touch-session). With yakkety released and z not yet opened all triple landing silos release the yakkety packages to the overlay - please remember that (in case you want to land something in yakkety main). Once z is up and running we'll be doing a batch binary copy and switching to that series as our devel tree. This should take less then a whole day and all users should see the update on their phones tomorrow at latest.
