introduce a GPU hang any longer... it just doesn't output to the
external screen at all.

Okay, that starts to make sense; I wondered if it might be something

Would you mind booting to a LiveCD and see if the hang reproduces?
What I'm thinking is that it's not unusual for random config files,
settings, etc. to accumulate over time. In theory Ubuntu should work
fine

Sorry for not commenting anything in the first description but after the
crash unity, top panel and all window decorations were gone and I was
not able to type anything. Copy and paste worked so I copied the first
bit of text I could find to allow bug report save.
This bug happened together with
BTW: Problem occurs also when logging into LXDE rather than into unity
(not sure if that information helps).
