WORKAROUND:
Revert back to the kernel version that your Ubuntu release came with:
Ubuntu 10.04 -- kernel 2.6.32
Ubuntu 11.04 -- kernel 2.6.38
-
- No workaround is available for Ubuntu 12.04-alpha-1 yet.

- TEST CASE FOR 12.04 (ALPHA-1):

- sudo
I have this problem as well. Unity 2d, which uses metacity, has tearing,
while the normal mode, which uses compiz, doesn't.

Public bug reported:
When using xscreensaver with glslideshow, the X server randomly crashes
after a few hours. Typically, this manifests itself by my coming to the
computer after leaving it overnight, only to find it at the X login
screen. This happens most nights, and sometimes during the day
