@svaens: Xorg 1.6.0 is fairly close to 1.6.3. You could try applying the
backclear patch to it. I'd say your chances are about 95% that it'll
work.
In my experience the latest drivers don't resolve this issue.

Try this sequence of commands:
sudo apt-get build-dep xorg-server
apt-get source xorg-server
cd xorg-server-1.6.3
patch -p1 /path/to/xserver-xorg-backclear.patch
debuild

Fixed my HD3650 restore problem without fail.

One thing; attempting to run an 'apt-get update' 'apt-get upgrade', I
get asked whether I want to upgrade the xserver-xorg-core package and
the related dev one.
Surely if I update this I will lose the patch?

Just applied the latest patch, and I also am no longer observing the
slowness. If I notice anything else strange that seems to have come
with the patch, I'll add another comment.
Felix: Thank you! This has been driving me nuts since upgrading to
jaunty.
For the record my hardware is an HD3400
As you may already know, it also affects karmic with the latest xserver-

Hi all,
I have a couple questions before I jump into this.
@Felix
You mentioned this is a patch against the Xorg version 1.6.3 included in
Karmic.
Does that mean I should not use it in Jaunty with Xorg 1.6.0 ?
Also, a subscriber to this bug, Michel, mentioned above that he was able to
solve
@svaens
The ati driver in karmic is actually already newer than the one on ati's
site (pre-release cat 9.10) the one on atis site is 9.9. I have used 9.9
before and it did not fix it for me.

[M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled
The patch is against the Xserver source shipped with Karmic's xorg-
server 1.6.3-1ubuntu4. Do not apply the no-backfill patch at the same
time as my backclear patch, they are mutually exclusive.
