Title:
Black screen on startup after HWE stack update on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
I was able to reproduce this bug on a Pentium 4 with a GeForce 6600.
Installing nvidia-304 rather than updates gives the exact same problem.
I will try to reproduce it with a different 6600 to see if it has to do
with the maker (my current card is a PNY).

Unfortunately I seem to have misplaced my other 6600.

Title:
Xorg does not
Your system was crippled already when it was on 16.04. You probably
still have libgbm1-lts-wily or such installed which diverted the lib,
because on 14.04.x the original had to be used.
xenial-updates has had libgbm1-lts-$foo transitional packages since
early august, see bug #1573190
--
You
you used 14.04.3 media to install the system, so check 'apt-cache policy
libgbm1-lts-vivid'

Title:
Xorg does not utilize the 3D graphics
the reason why 16.04 worked was that it used the intel X driver which
didn't need libgbm1

Hello,
I improved on this *upstream* bug diagnosis by doing another careful git
bisect.

I tried ubuntu-gnome live, looks fine on my BDW with 3200x1800 screen..

Everything worked fine in 16.04. I then upgraded to 16.10 a bit early to
see if I could find any bugs, and immediately noticed that Unity was
running in low-graphics mode, and YouTube chugs noticably.

included in the ubuntu-desktop meta-package.

Public bug reported:
After using my system for a period of time, usually less than an hour,
the screen starts to corrupt. It will vary in intensity, until the
system either crashes, or everything goes back to normal for a while.
When the system does crash, not even the sysrq-key works.
The package is installed, but the file is not there.

Xorg does not utilize the 3D
I reinstalled the package, no dice. I then looked around for it, and
found that it had been renamed to old.libgbm1.so, along with the file it
linked to. I renamed both, removing the "old.", and now 3D works. It's
definitely still a bug though.

Confirmed. In my case the HDMI display rendered correctly but while
plugged in, the desktop on the laptop screen flickered badly (cycling
through triple buffers without any glClear()).
