Do you guys need my logs too, or is what cypressyew provided enough ?
Just let me know. For now, I cannot test Ubuntu Trusty at all due to
this low-graphics issue, which is quite frustrating.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 509329]

2014-04-09 Thread Ajax-a
(In reply to comment #0)

What I would expect that if the system can detect (which it can do) which
resolution is the native resolution, it would enable clone mode and set the
resolutions to the respective *native resolutions* instead of setting them
 both to 1024x768.

That's nonsensical. Clone means identical.

We did actually try doing something like this at one point, where we'd
set all the outputs to their native resolutions, overlapping, with their
top-left corners aligned. Turns out that's a worse solution because
desktop UI elements like panels get either placed in the middle of the
screen (if you align them to the smaller screen) or only visible on one
screen and not the other (if you align them to the larger). And people
hated that, and rightly so, so now we pick the largest mode supported on
both.

2014-04-09 Thread Erick Brunzell
Thanks Alberto, yes it worked but it was sloppy on my end.

The vesa driver does not work well here (too much screen tearing) so I
had to approach this by installing Lubuntu Saucy and then handling the
rest in a chroot, but the attached apt logs should show you what I have.

I will not however give this a verification done until we see how it
works in the Precise daily's with the Saucy hardware enablement stack:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/precise/daily-live/current/

Because we'll need to be sure that upgrades from the Saucy enablement
stack to the Trusty enablement stack work OK in Precise when the time
comes.

Test program to help reproduce the bug

If the root window and all its subwindows are redirected to off-screen
storage by using XCompositeRedirectSubwindows with the update parameter
set to CompositeRedirectAutomatic, some windows fail to repaint
correctly in some conditions.

To reproduce this bug:
(1) ensure that windows are NOT currently redirected to off-screen storage
(2) run the attached test application, or run xcompmgr -a if you have it
installed.
(3) open any regular window, then open a menu window so that it overlaps with
it partially
(4) close the menu window and open it again in another position so that it will
not overlap with the regular window
(5) observe that the part of the regular window that was covered by the first
menu window is cleared and then it's not normally repainted anymore

I can reproduce reliably on a machine running Ubuntu Linux 11.04, which runs
X.org version 1.10.1, with Linux kernel 2.6.24-29-server x86_64
The window manager running is Metacity (with Metacity's own compositor
disabled).

The menu windows mentioned in steps 3 to 5 are those that appear when
right clicking on the desktop. I don't know what is special about them
in X11 terms, but there are no other windows that exhibit this behavior
that I could find.

I could reproduce this bug both on an Nvidia card and on a machine with
integrated Intel graphics.

The issue seems to be caused only when override redirect windows (such
as GtkMenus) overlap a window, then the menu is destroyed and somehow
the area previously occupied by the menu is clipped (and the wallpaper
is visible) when a new menu (which doesn't overlap the same window) is
created. Moving the window makes the hole go away as miMoveWindow() does
a RegionCopy().

I guess something weird happens when the window is no longer marked as
overlapped. Maybe miMarkOverlappedWindows() doesn't play well with
override redirect windows in CompositeRedirectAutomatic mode.

Any ideas as to how I can further debug the issue?

Thanks

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1304912] [NEW] Ubuntu 14.04 laptop uses lot of power switchable graphics

2014-04-09 Thread Lars Schütze
Public bug reported:

I have a Samsung Series 7 Chronos 700Z3A-S02DE. It uses an i5-2450m
(Intel HD2000) and an AMD 6490m dedicated graphics card. Since Ubuntu
14.04 uses Linux kernel 3.13 it enables dpm by default. This causes the
graphics card to be shut down to dynoff when not used and should make it
use (almost) no power.

However, the laptop fans are working all the time and the laptop
produces quite a lot of heat (the CPU does not heat as sensors are at
60°C). The sensor for the graphcis card always shows -128°C.

Using powertop it reveals that the laptop consumes around 34W on
battery. Looking on the list where the usage is shown per device it
shows the radeon graphics card with 0%.

I think there is a bug and the graphics card is NOT shutdown correctly
to not use any noticable power.

I would appreciate if I can help you to find the issue and if you need any more
information.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1304912] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 laptop uses lot of power switchable graphics

2014-04-09 Thread Lars Schütze
I have already installed the latest kernel from Ubuntu mainline kernels
(3.14 trusty). The problem still exists.

** Tags added: apport-collected compiz-0.9 trusty ubuntu

** Description changed:

- I would appreciate if I can help you to find the issue and if you need
- any more information.
+ I would appreciate if I can help you to find the issue and if you need any

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1304912] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 laptop uses lot of power switchable graphics

2014-04-09 Thread Lars Schütze
** Description changed:

  I have a Samsung Series 7 Chronos 700Z3A-S02DE. It uses an i5-2450m
(Intel HD2000) and an AMD 6490m dedicated graphics card. Since Ubuntu
14.04 uses Linux kernel 3.13 it enables dpm by default. This causes the
graphics card to be shut down to dynoff when not used and should make it
  use (almost) no power.

However, the laptop fans are working all the time and the laptop
- produces quite a lot of heat (the CPU does not heat as sensors are at
+ produces quite a lot of noise (the CPU does not heat as sensors are at

I would appreciate if I can help you to find the issue and if you need any
more information.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1305003] [NEW] Both xubuntu and lubuntu crash after reaching desktop

2014-04-09 Thread Ian
Public bug reported:

When I try the 14.04 beta2 ISOs, both xubuntu and lubuntu crash seconds
after reaching the desktop. It happens after about five seconds with the
former and about one second with the latter.

This happens on two machines, one with an A8 5500 APU, i.e. AMD Radeon
HD 7560D graphics, and one with an A4-5300 APU, i.e. AMD Radeon HD 7480D
graphics.

Because of the nature of the crash, it doesn't leave logfiles.

The MD5s of the ISO files verify, and the same memory sticks work fine
with two laptops... neither of which have AMD APUs.

I normally run Linux Mint 16 with the AMD Catalyst drivers, but it also
worked with the libre drivers with 13.10.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1240957] Re: Scrolling behaviour and window focus has changed and is inconsistent

2014-04-09 Thread Lem
For the record Chris, the scrolling issue with GTK3 apps (only tested
gEdit) is still present under KDE/KWin (makes sense since you fixed this
from within Compiz, so I guess more a workaround?). Perhaps it would be
nice to give the KWin guys a heads up on how you fixed this with Compiz
so maybe they could do the same with KWin?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1305264] [NEW] Incorrect display when using monitor on the left on NVIDIA Optimus Card

2014-04-09 Thread Lukasz Piepiora
Public bug reported:

When using configuring screen to be placed on the left side Unity
behaves incorrectly. The screen on the left monitor is containing
duplication of the main screen. This means that when I reach edge of the
external display the content contains duplicated copy of main display
which is scrolled as I move cursor. The same content is shown on the
main display.

Additionally making windows full screen makes the window full screen on
both displays.

This is not the case when the main screen (laptop) is configured to be
on the left and external monitor is on the right.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1305003] Re: Both xubuntu and lubuntu crash after reaching desktop

2014-04-09 Thread Ian
Ah, adding 'nomodeset' as a kernel option seems to work for Lubuntu, let
me see if it does for Xubuntu too...

... yes.

Elsewhere on launchpad, there's a suggestion that nomodeset be the
default for systems with 'recent' Radeon cards. I am minded to agree.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1305327] [NEW] Always in visible workspace does not work

2014-04-09 Thread berend
Public bug reported:

I can enable this option, but doesn't do anything, stays in single
workspace.

If you go to compiz, general options, and look at desktop size, it
doesn't show data for vertical virtual size and number of desktops. Can
set them with the unity tweak tool, but does not show up in compiz.
Setting these options in compiz won't make them stick.

So possibly related: i.e. workspaces don't work, therefore this option
doesn't work.

nouveau driver exhibits exactly the same corruption, almost worse I
would say. Enabled it with:

  xrandr --output LVDS-1 --panning 3520x1200

so not an nvidia driver bug, but somewhere in Xorg.

2014-04-09 Thread Tommy_CZ
Well I think mesa is still buggy, because 9 and 10 version produces some
screen corruptions in all KDE versions (in 12.04.4 and 14.04) and the
only resolution is to downgrade to Mesa 8. It occurs on Ivy bridge and
Sandy bridge intels.
