I'm having the same problem. I'm given the option to start in low-
graphics mode or to boot to a console, etc., but everything I choose
just gives me a black screen, so I simply can't log into my computer

As far as I can tell, this always happens when the monitor powers off
after 1/2 hour of inactivity. If I leave the screensaver on indefinitely
without having the monitor power off, it never seems to happen.
By the way, why is this tagged hardy? I have only had this problem
under Lucid.
