Title:
USB mouse cursor lags after random time of correct behaviour

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired
Status in rtirq package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
I installed Ubuntu Studio 18.04.1 LTS. After the first apt-get update I
noticed the following behaviour:
after havig logged in, my USB mouse works normally for about ten seconds,
then the cursor starts lagging a lot which makes the mouse pretty much unusable.
The last dmesg always contain lines these: (more in attached file)

  [<9e659b0c>] irq_default_primary_handler threaded
[] usb_hcd_irq
  [<9e659b0c>] irq_default_primary_handler threaded
[] _rtl_pci_interrupt [rtl_pci]
  Disabling IRQ #18

Out of frustration & curiosity I disabled most autostart apps
(Settings > Session ... > Autostart) and re-enabled them after
rebooting. Since then I rarely encounter the lagging cursor. If I open
Settings > Mouse & Touchpad and toggle any option on/off the cursor
  starts lagging.

How can make the cursor work reliably?
Some comment in dmesg mentions "irqpoll" boot option

  Ubuntu Studio 18.04.1
  4.15.0-20-lowlatency #21-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1787857] Re: USB mouse cursor lags after random time of correct behaviour

2021-06-08 Thread Rudolf Schmidt
In my case with Parrot Linux it was a case of Interrupt conflicts.
IRQ#18 kept being disabled by the system. After disabling the EHCI
Handoff in the BIOS,ehci_hcd:usb1 was replaced with ehci_hcd:usb2 and
the mouse lag after a random period of time stopped.

You can view your interrupt assignments with:
cat /proc/interrupts

Mine changed from:
18: IO-APIC 18-fasteoi ehci_hcd:usb1, pata_jmicron, ata_piix, uhci_hcd:usb8
to:
18: IO-APIC 18-fasteoi ehci_hcd:usb2, pata_jmicron, ata_piix, uhci_hcd:usb8

And the problem was resolved.

My PC had this issue. It was an Intel chip and a Logitech mouse,
keyboard. Over Christmas, I upgraded my desktop. The issue has gone away
now. I'm still using my Logitech keyboard and an Intel chip.

2019-11-21 Thread n2o
I also have this issue.
Plugging it in to a USB3 port solves the issue, but I don't want to waste my
precious USB3 ports for a mouse.

I experienced the issue with Ubuntu Studio 19.04, 19.10.
With 18.04 it works fine.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1787857] Re: USB mouse cursor lags after random time of correct behaviour

2019-11-03 Thread Philip Greer
I'm seeing this as well with Ubuntu 19.10, uname -a:

Linux Asus 5.3.0-19-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 18 09:04:39 UTC 2019
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Tried both usb3 and usb2 ports, on and off an (externally powered) USB
hub. Strangely, a wireless mouse works - with the usb thumb in the same
port that my wired mouse was not working on

Has anyone tried compiling their own custom kernel and this becomes
resolved? Or still the same issue (as the code base is the same)?

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1787857] Re: USB mouse cursor lags after random time of correct behaviour

2019-10-12 Thread Eric Detheridge
I encountered this recently under Ubuntu 16.04.5 with Linux
4.15.0-65-lowlatency with an AMD A8-3870k APU. In the most recent case
the machine was fine for nearly a week until I was reading a large
amount of data off a usb stick. By moving my mouse receiver to a USB 3.0
port I was able to make the mouse work normally again without having to
reboot.

Title:
USB mouse cursor lags after random time of correct behaviour

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in rtirq package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
I installed Ubuntu Studio 18.04.1 LTS. After the first apt-get update I
noticed the following behaviour:
after havig logged in, my USB mouse works normally for about ten seconds,
then the cursor starts lagging a lot which makes the mouse pretty much unusable.
The last dmesg always contain lines these: (more in attached file)

  [<9e659b0c>] irq_default_primary_handler threaded
[] usb_hcd_irq
  [<9e659b0c>] irq_default_primary_handler threaded
[] _rtl_pci_interrupt [rtl_pci]
  Disabling IRQ #18

Out of frustration & curiosity I disabled most autostart apps
(Settings > Session ... > Autostart) and re-enabled them after
rebooting. Since then I rarely encounter the lagging cursor. If I open
Settings > Mouse & Touchpad and toggle any option on/off the cursor
  starts lagging.

How can make the cursor work reliably?
Some comment in dmesg mentions "irqpoll" boot option

2019-08-03 Thread vince lewis
I just tested 5.0.0-23-lowlatency kernel with the mouse plugged into a
USB3 port, and everything seems to be okay. So it does seem to be USB2
specific (I dont have any USB1 ports to test it on, sorry)

2019-08-03 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
So it's specific to AMD systems.

Does this only happened to EHCI (USB 2.0) ports? Does this happen when
it's connected to xHCI (USB 3.0)?

installing general packages, just this scenario is new to me and I can't
find any instructions on google.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1787857] Re: USB mouse cursor lags after random time of correct behaviour

2019-07-15 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Subscribing kernel team.

Also, posting the difference between the kernel configurations for
reference so that you can see exactly why I believe it's a hardware
issue. This issue you're reporting has been reported very few times,
which is why I believe there is hardware commonality and might be
related to the video driver.

For instance, I have issues with stuttering on my AMD video unless I add
the following kernel options:

radeon.cik_support=0 radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.dc=1
amdgpu.cik_support=1 amdgpu.si_support=1 amdgpu.dpm=0
amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1

Here's the configuration file differences, which you'll find are VERY minimal:

Bug description:
I installed Ubuntu Studio 18.04.1 LTS. After the first apt-get update I
noticed the following behaviour:
after havig logged in, my USB mouse works normally for about ten seconds,
then the cursor starts lagging a lot which makes the mouse pretty much unusable.
The last dmesg always contain lines these: (more in attached file)

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1787857] Re: USB mouse cursor lags after random time of correct behaviour

2019-07-15 Thread Lassi
I tried now with 'linux-generic' package (provides currently linux-
image-5.0.0-20-generic). I did not experience any mouse lag issues,
upon any successful* boot. So in that sense this is 0/10 reproducible
with 'generic' kernel variant.

With 'lowlatency' kernel the mouse lag issue is roughly 5/10.

*) NOTE: with 'generic'-kernel I saw i2c-2 device NAK errors at startup boot
messages, and sometimes the boot froze at that point. I checked with the
'i2cdetect' tool and the listing for device 2 showed "nvkm". Howwever, I saw
the i2c-2 NAK errors during successful boots as well.

With 'lowlatency' kernel I did not see the i2c NAK-errors at all, but
the dmesg in mouse lag case shows "nvkm" in it...

So, could this be related to KMS somehow?

2019-07-15 Thread Lassi
I just saw this right at boot. The mouse was lagging already at the
login screen. And the login screen took around 10 seconds to show up
after the first two lines of kernel boot messages. (Usually takes around
2 seconds).

In that case I'm keeping this as incomplete, especially since OP
(ronso0) has failed to verify with suggestions given by kaihengfeng. I
feel like there is some hardware commonality here, and would like to see
some hardware specifics as previously requested to better triage this
bug.

but I'd love to see more comments first to confirm this.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1787857] Re: USB mouse cursor lags after random time of correct behaviour

2019-06-24 Thread vince lewis
I have the same issue.

At the login screen, I select my user, enter the password, the mouse works fine
at this point.
Click on login, wait, screen comes up then at random, the mouse either
works fine (about 1 time in 5) or it goes really really slow (4 times out of 5).

Only way I'm working around it is to reboot (usually 5 times ish) till
it decides to work.

As a test manager by trade I would say this is a P3 at least not a P4,
as it's definitely a functional issue not cosmetic, albeit with an
untidy workaround (many reboots).

I'm running 4.15.0-52-lowlatency #56-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT Tue Jun 4
23:39:39 UTC 2019 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

then the cursor starts lagging a lot which makes the mouse pretty much unusable.
The last dmesg always contain lines these: (more in attached file)

  [<9e659b0c>] irq_default_primary_handler threaded
[] usb_hcd_irq
  [<9e659b0c>] irq_default_primary_handler threaded
[] _rtl_pci_interrupt [rtl_pci]
  Disabling IRQ #18

Out of frustration & curiosity I disabled most autostart apps
(Settings > Session ... > Autostart) and re-enabled them after
rebooting. Since then I rarely encounter the lagging cursor. If I open
Settings > Mouse & Touchpad and toggle any option on/off the cursor
  starts lagging.

How can make the cursor work reliably?
Some comment in dmesg mentions "irqpoll" boot option

  Ubuntu Studio 18.04.1
  4.15.0-20-lowlatency #21-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1787857] Re: USB mouse cursor lags after random time of correct behaviour

2019-02-03 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Still need to know hardware specifics. I, for one, have AMD Graphics
which exhibits this behavior without some AMD-specific kernel parameters
in the command line in grub. Either way, subscribing the kernel package
to this as well.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1787857] Re: USB mouse cursor lags after random time of correct behaviour

2018-09-12 Thread ronso0
It is an kernel issue.
I tested with all 4.15.* kernels available in the ubuntu repo, but only
upgrading the kernel to 4.16.0-041600-lowlatency from [1] solved all issues.

don't have time to test other distros, sorry
how can I help now?

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1787857] Re: USB mouse cursor lags after random time of correct behaviour

2018-08-19 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Please post this in the forums at ubuntuforums.com or at askubuntu.com.
Also, please check to see if this is happening with any of the other
flavors, especially Xubuntu. For now, I have to mark this bug as
incomplete since further information may be required, such as your
specific hardware information. Moreover, the bug has to be targeted at
a specific package and not the Ubuntu flavor in general, so until there
is further information this bug is incomplete.
