I also had the fast-playback issue with using a dmix device. Using
option '-u X' resamples the audio to the max supported by the card,
which fixes the issue.
Also, to be clear, the desired router would be a WRT54GL, not a WRT54G.
The extra 'L' stands for "Linux" and is capable of being flashed with
some very good third party firmware.

Whether it's locked down or not is independent of it being lossless or
lossy.
A quick bit of googleing reveals that some people seem to have gotten
WMA Lossless to play back on Linux systems via the use of xine and/o
e installation will
be entirely smooth for a newbie. Linux, like any OS, has a learning
curve. I'm pretty good with Windows and Linux (because I've been using
them for years), but I would be a little lost on OS X for a while,
because I've never used it.

use a GUI with that machine. Even if you were to upgrade the RAM, the
processor is also pretty slow.
In an age where P4s with 512MB RAM can be found on craigslist for less
than $100, I wouldn't be messing around with
I don't have one of these machines, but I think one primary difference
is that the Dell machines come with licensed Fluendo codec packs.
Could be useful, depending on your country and/or feelings towards
software patents...
