I had to replace my original SB3 after 14 years of service.
I chose to use a Pi(3) with HiFiBerry dac as a replacement.
The piCorePlayer 7.0 image was truly plug and play.
I'm very happy with the setup. I do miss the VU Meters of the SB3

running the update to 7.0.1 is what may have broken things.
I'm not 100% sure this is the culprit but It was the last thing I did

working on pCP. Is this the right place to ask for help?
When I power it up the backlight comes on and the screen fades to grey
(with some light vertical lines).
I don't get the rainbow display and subsequent boot text.

FAT32 (instead of ext4) and copied some music files on it. All files
were found and streamed with no problem. Music files

As kidstypike explained earlier, the pCP SAMBA SERVER is to allow a disk
local to pCP to be accessed from another computer in the network.
I had assume that you have a drive plugged into the pCP USB.
If you do not then forget SAMBA in pCP.
Instead you need to run a SAMBA or NFS client on pCP -
