Ok, yes, one can telnet to port 9000 and try to enter http data.
Usually, though, unless you really know your http, all you'll get back

With a stock SBS/LMS/UEML config, you'll only be able to telnet to port
9090 -- that's the CLI port. It's to be expected that the SBS http

My problem miraculously fixed itself when I ran the script - it said
that LMS was already running and then it was. I think the problem was
caused by Ubuntu Desktop being too much for my old Core 2 duo to handle,

Okay - I think I got to the bottom of it on my own! It is now working -
at least for now. :)
It seems the problem was being caused by the second drive being
auto-mounted by the desktop, rather than being mounted by the system.
This meant that LMS couldn't access it.

You could try starting LMS using this debugging script..
# sudo ./lms-debug.sh
lms-debug.sh:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
# Script to debug startup of squeezeboxserver/logitechmediaserver
TRUNCATE=1
GITDEAMON='/usr/share/lms/server/slimserver.pl'
