Depending on where you got your board from, it may not have the latest firmware. I just checked, and RPI has moved the VLI chipset update to critical status. You can update using pCP, but you need to follow these instructions.

Ok in Windows (10) file explorer i made a file netusb on the boot partition pcp-boot on the sd card. No extension. so it is simular to the ssh file for example that is allready on the sd card. No luck. At a normal boot it shows up as a client in my router. Now it does not.

It's a power issue - I was overloading the Pi PSU by trying to power an external HD via USB. I couldn't get WiFi to work by editing the wpa_supplicant.conf file either - but on disconnecting the USB HD it's again working fine. I'll go back to storing my music on couple of thumb drives for now.

Tried doing a backup after a WiFi change, and rebooting. I get exactly the same problem, WiFi not working. On the WiFi configuration pane under "WiFi information" to the right of the MAC address is displayed "Wifi IP: is missing - [Reboot] or [Save] to connect."
