By that reasoning, Livecode should recreate all the API’s Apple provides,
rolling their own. And then we will get to gripe when they don’t work anymore
after updating our OS. C’mon guys. For better or worse, ALL OS developers have
to continue to innovate. If Apple’s OS troubles you, you can always use Win 8.x
where you have to relearn where everything is, or Linux and then deal with
piecing together all the components necessary for your app to work on every
workstation that uses it. sigh

Perhaps . . . Livecode (or its community, or its community [whatever])
should recreate all APIs (what are you doing shoving
an apostrophes in there?) that differ cross-platform to that the
programmer has a uniform experience when working . . .

Bl**dy hilarious to the other Linux user out here . . .

while Ubuntu might be best described as the coming-man already gone as

What we have now is sort of a best-of-both-worlds:

Where consistency with the rest of the OS is important, we have hooks in

And where we have liberty to take liberties from the consistency, as

Having participated in some long discussions on the Ubuntu Community
List recently, it seems the scope of discontent is varying in both
content and, dare I say it, merit.

Canonical have made their own goals and priorities transparently clear.
They're working on a truly Third Platform family of systems, so things
like Unity and Mir are solutions relevant to that goal which simply
aren't being addressed by projects with different goals.

But the beauty of Linux, and open source in general, is that everyone
can have exactly what they want. There's nothing requiring anyone to
work on any project that doesn't reflect their own personal preferences.

It's Linux - there are hundreds of distros, dozens of desktop
environments, all of which can be mixed and matched in all sorts of ways
if any single one of them isn't reflective of whatever specific things
one might want.

With so many free software projects out there, it should be easy for
everyone to have exactly what they want: If CLAs are a problem just
move upstream and contribute to Debian. If Unity makes your skin crawl
(though I rather like it) the folks at Gnome could use a hand and are
doing some excellent work, as are the KDE folks. If Upstart seems too
limited then work on init.d (though to their credit Canonical ditched
their investment in Upstart during the voting process that favored
init.d, even as they get no credit for being team players and as init.d
faces legitimate criticism of scope overreach).

To be frank, more than a few of the blog posts I've read are from people
who seem to believe that open source means telling other developers what
to work on, rather than just choosing to work on something themselves
that reflects their personal interests and goals.

I've argued with Mr. Shuttleworth myself on a blog comment space or two.
I don't always agree with him, but I do agree with the larger goals of
the project, and find Canonical very supportive of contributions that
offer actionable design alternatives.

I am currently doing reasonably well with Ubuntu Studio 14.10 as
it uses XFCE without all sorts of funninesses that seem to crop
up with Xubuntu, and don't have the faux Windows 8 kiddy-kit
of Ubuntu [or is it Windows 8 that has the faux Ubuntu kiddy-kit?].

There must be a humor there more obscure than my own. I use and like
both Win 8 and Ubuntu, but see very little similarity between them
beyond perhaps both having overlapping windows and a pointer.

Re: I Hate the New Color Picker

2014-12-08 Thread Howard Bornstein
Well, this is strange. I was checking out the color picker in Yosemite
using TextEdit, which incidentally, doesn't have those Cancel and OK
buttons, but has the dot to pull down the color dock. When I call up the
color picker in LC, I get the same view as Geoff, with two lines of palette
docks and no dot to extend the dock section. Unlike Roger, I couldn't find
the sweet spot to make this work.

Apparently, LC has modified the system color wheel to a certain extent.

Yup, it’s a Cocoa thing. Not there in 6.6.x on Yosemite. Magically appears when

Bummer! I find that versions 6.7.x are a problem for me, but I’ve also found
that you can use the dot to reveal more swatches of the Color Picker in LC
6.7.1 (rc2), and it will stay “open” for when I go back to my current LC
favorite, 6.6.5.

How much functionality do you want in a color picker? If you just want to allow
a user to pick from a fixed set of colours, it’s easy to grow your own -
cross-platform too. But of course that’s just a small subset of an OS’s picker.

The color chooser from RR/LC 2.0 has RGB sliders so one does NOT have to
depend on the fixed palette of a limited

The only differences I see from the color wheel in Snow Leopard is that the
selected color choice is a small square at the bottom in Yosemite with an
eye dropper and it's a bar across the top in Snow Leopard with a magnifying
glass. The Saturation slider is on the bottom in Yosemite and down the
right side in Snow Leopard. The color selector cursor is a circle with
cross hairs in Yosemite and a small square in Snow Leopard. That's
basically it.

You can do that yourself, of course, by simply adding a plugin. But so
far, I have heard from only two people who actually want that option.
I'm happier with the system picker myself, since on OS X it allows
extensions that provide many more color options.

There seems to be quite a lot to hate about Yosemite.

I wonder what Apple thought they were doing.

Richmond,

Do I recall that you had converted an old MetaCard Color picker for LC about a
year ago? If so, is it still available?

Thanks!
Roger

That's true: but I haven't a clue where it has gone.

Possibly (???) I could just suck it out of the Metacard setup and post
it again :)

Don't hold your breath; it'll take a while.

No hurry, and no worries if you don’t. I can always use the ugly one.

I’m sure the new color picker is totally Apple’s (Yosemite) fault, but I hate

Is there anything I can do about it, like go back to the old one?
