(specifically with using SOAP Client)

Do you mean with the S2 REST plugin? I haven't used it with anything SOAP-ish;
REST is kind of a response to the perceived heaviness of SOAP.

I would make sure your applicationContext.xml defines the
PropertyPlaceHolderConfigurer attributes as in
WEB-INF/mail.properties
..
and that your fully configured mail.properties is located in WEB-INF

At this location and at this time, it has to be Java and struts2.
BTW, it's for an internal web application. This mini-app rides along in the
same struts2 framework as other mini-apps.
