Re: DRM/GEM how to proceed
On 04.10.11 22:22, Johannes Hofmann wrote: Hi, I happen to have a Core i5 laptop with integrated Intel graphics. Unfortunately recent versions of xf86-video-intel need kernel support to work. Most notably the GEM interface needs to be implemented in the kernel. It's not only about GEM, but KMS as well. As far as I know only FreeBSD folks have (somewhat) working KMS code. OpenBSD has only GEM implemented and is maintaining de facto a fork of the intel driver because of that. But modifying the intel driver can't be avoided anyway. I'd recommend to go to the FreeBSD route. We share the DRM code which should make a lot of things easier, especially in KMS land. -- Hasso

Update to the state of the pkgsrc
- I no longer have a hardware to do regular full pbulk builds from pkgsrc HEAD with DragonFly master. - I no longer have much time to care about either. This doesn't mean that I'll will not do anything any more etc, but I don't have resources any more to care about pkgsrc for DragonFly community I did up to now. Also I think that some things need to change to preserve usability of pkgsrc at all for DragonFly users. - Official (signed?) regular pbulk builds. The current situation really isn't acceptable. I'd never use packages from random source updated randomly (no security updates). Really. - Public logs from all pbulk builds. The logs are there for reason. I don't see any in the avalon at the moment. How people should fix anything even if they care? - Using bug tracking systems for pkgsrc bugs. I'd recommend using NetBSD GNATS for bugs which are addressed to the pkgsrc committers à la here is a patch to make package x/y build on DragonFly and bugs.dragonflybsd.org for reports which need to be investigated by DragonFly developers (à la the package x/y doesn't build or work on DragonFly). Once again - it doesn't mean that I quit or smth. I still can take care of committing patches to the pkgsrc (you can kick me by mail if something is stucked in the GNATS), I will continue to maintain my packages and doing some general pkgsrc work. I just don't have a resources to continue the fix as much of pkgsrc as possible work I did up to now. But it also means that things will rotten quite fast in the pkgsrc. To preserve usability of the pkgsrc, the help from community is very much needed. -- Hasso Tepper

A little installing experience
I got a shiny new HP server to test and it might happen that I can't get all issues with DragonFly on it solved before I'll loose it for testing, therefore will document problems found so far. * Network doesn't work. The bce(4) driver in our tree needs and update to get support for 5709 devices. * PS2 keyboard doesn't work at all in DragonFly, the USB one works only sometimes. There is two issues. At first PS2 isn't actually a real PS2, but emulated one. This commit in OpenBSD is relevant probably: http://anoncvs.estpak.ee/cgi-bin/cgit/openbsd-src/commit/?id=08a81789 The second issue is that there is always at least one USB keyboard and mouse in the system - virtual ones from ILO management console. Therefore there are problems choosing between these and real ones. We need keyboard muxing to solve this issue. * The system doesn't boot from ciss(4) raid volume. Mounting root is attempted before volume (da0) is really detected. It's a devfs issue, pre-devfs system boots fine. * System behaves well when installing, but after booting into installed system from raid volume (pre-devfs system) there are constant intr 11 livelock messages in the console and the system is under 50% interrupt load. This is gone if I disconnect SATA DVD (not ahci(4)) device. Why it isn't the while installing? There might be more of course, help is welcome ;). -- Hasso Tepper

If I mount it in the working system, interrupt storm stops as well. Isn't there something low level annoying (probing?) the device if it isn't mounted and it's not aligigning requests correctly (AFAIR SATA ATAPI required requests being multiple of 4 (?) bytes)? -- Hasso Tepper
How can I help with pkgsrc? FAQ
Q: Pkgsrc sucks! A: Yes, I know. Q: But shouldn't we look at alternatives then? A: There is really none. We just can't take random packaing management system and modify to our needs. We don't have resources for that. Really, believe me. Btw, one of best ways to piss me off is to start discussion regarding this again. Q: But I'm willing to do all the porting work myself! A: Unless you really do and make all these thousands packages build and work for us (pkgsrc have more than 8000 at the moment), don't expect to see any helping hand. Q: But how can I really help? A: That's the right question. There are several areas where I'd like to see a little help from community. * Not all packages which are there and building on DragonFly don't really work. I started to use http://bugs.dragonflybsd.org to track these issues (tagged with pkgsrc keyword). Take a issue, fix it and submit patches. * Not all packages build on DragonFly. Take a look at pbulk logs at http://leaf.dragonflybsd.org/~hasso/pbulk-logs/ to identify packages which don't build for some time (random failures are mostly fixed by the time you see the log). Note, that I will not accept patches to make build historic versions you might find in the pkgsrc. If you care, please update the package at first and then make it build and work on DragonFly. * There is a lot of packages in the pkgsrc which build and work fine, but only do because of patches applied from pkgsrc. It's really important that these patches will go into their upstreams really. Find a such package from pkgsrc tree, find out how to submit patches to the upstream and do it. But, please do it in polite way, submit patches against upstream repository, test it before submitting, explain non-obvious parts of patches (you can ask from me if you have problems understanding some parts of the patches) etc. Upstreams are mostly very friendly (there are exceptions of course) and fast pushing patches into releases, it's really only putting a little bit time and effort into it. Take a look at these patches there, commit them or die! isn't a polite way, btw ;). Thank you! -- Hasso Tepper
Qemu in the pkgsrc
I updated qemu in the pkgsrc to the 0.10.6 version and have all the patches floating around relevant to DragonFly. This with combination of DESTDIR support makes this procedure possible: cd /usr/src/pkgtools/pkg_install/ bmake USE_DESTDIR=yes package pkg_add -u /usr/src/packages/pkg_install-[DATE].tgz The same procedure works with bootstrap-mk-files and bmake packages. The state of compilers in DragonFly and stuff
The gcc-4.4.1 was imported into DragonFly by corecode recently. I have to confess that it was probably my fault partly - I began discussion regarding this ;). There is two major issues with it though ... At first corecode made -march=i686 default. It means that binaries compiled with it will not run on i486/i586 machines (which are supported by DragonFly) any more. I disagree with this because I think that compiler should generate (at least by default) binaries running on all supported machines. Note, that that's my main point. What we should support is slightly another story. I don't mind dropping i486 support. Although it's still very much alive nowadays (cpu's are in production etc), it's relevant in the embedded world only. I'd argue regarding dropping i586 support (note, it's not only pentium, but also at least all Cyrix, VIA C3 and AMD K5/K6 CPU's). But if the comunnity agrees on this ... Good relevant reading: http://osdir.com/ml/redhat.release.psyche/2002-10/msg03258.html Another issue is the state of pkgsrc. I didn't imagine that there is so much issues with pkgsrc. gcc 4.4 is much better at discovering potential strict aliasing problems (that includes in software using -Werror ;() and there was a major cleanup of c++ headers in gcc-4.4 development cycle causing major problems now while building c++ programs. There is probably more, these issues popped up as major ones doing partial pbulk build with 400 packages I use on my desktops only. I don't have resources (mostly time) to do so much work on pkgsrc and I don't see it coming from elsewhere either. NetBSD (as all other BSD's as well) have no plans to get any GPLv3 code into their bases, so no any fix build with gcc-4.4 commits from there. In short I don't see the chance to make gcc-4.4 default even after the 2.4 release. We just can't break so much things. Honestly, I don't know what position/direction we should take now ... ;) Thoughts? -- Hasso Tepper

v4l2 and DragonFly
Anyone has any plans to work on video support for DragonFly? I mean especially newer stuff using v4l2 (Video for Linux 2) API etc. I'm asking because if not, I'm going to disable pkgsrc video stuff using v4l2 API for now. -- Hasso Tepper

It's default and using libc_r isn't something you should do in production system anyway. libc_r is there for testing purposes only. I can also guarantee that it introduces at least some problems with building pkgsrc packages. There shouldn't be any problem running packages built before that change though. I'm in vacation next four weeks, so I'm not able to work on this much, but I hope to get most of pkgsrc in shape again (to fix failures in essential packages at least) during this week. -- Hasso Tepper

Re: Call for help with firefox 3.5
Ühel kenal päeval (reede 03 juuli 2009) kirjutasid sa: I'm kinda lost in this sea of source code. Do you have any idea where this OSS source is relative to the pkgsrc work dirs? media/libsydneyaudio Browsing stuff in mecurial repo might be helpful as well: http://hg.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla-1.9.1/file/dc0e69abb566/media/libsydneyaudio/src/ I also need a way to incrementally rebuild and reinstall firefox to test changes since clearly I don't want to rebuild the whole thing from scratch every time I mess with the source a little. Joerg might have some recommendations, I don't :). -- Hasso Tepper
Call for help with firefox 3.5
I made Firefox 3.5 (wip/firefox in the pkgsrc) work on DragonFly. Thanks to Matt who implemented shared POSIX semaphores in 10 minutes HTML5 video/audio tags are working now as well (you need a very recent master for that). There is still problems though. In videos there are sync problems (audio is about second behind the picture) and it crashes often while seeking or if video just finishes playing. My guess is that it's related OSS backend because nobody actually uses it in the upstream (I don't think that any OS relevant today except FreeBSD and DragonFly use OSS by default at all). There are several commits into other backends to solve sync problems, but none into OSS code. Therefore call for help - if you can and understand what OSS is (I don't ;), please look at it. -- Hasso Tepper
Re: Call for help with firefox 3.5
Joerg Sonnenberger wrote: NetBSD and OpenBSD use either the SunOS interface or OSS compatibility. I think the situation for Solaris is somewhat similar... In other words: only Mac OS X, Windows and Linux use something other than OSS :) At least in Firefox 3.5 OSS backend isn't compiled on Solaris at all. Both NetBSD and OpenBSD do the same (in the ports) - only sunaudio backend is compiled. Therefore I doubt that OSS is received any real testing at all ;). -- Hasso Tepper

ABI/API soft freeze reminder
Let me remind to you that there is ABI/API soft freeze now in effect until 2.4 release. I know that we all wanted to do more in this cycle (libc_r removal etc), but as it's not done for now, sorry ... it has to wait for post 2.4 now. The goal of the freeze is to provide relatively stable environment for pkgsrc development work so focus can be moved to fix packages not only to the breakages caused by the development in the base. Soft freeze doesn't mean that bugs can't be fixed and development can't be done, but ... * Please not moving things around in headers even if the result is more correct according to standards. No playing with standards etc related ifdefs either, please. * No changes to the public API/ABI in the libraries in the base. This includes both removal and adding of the symbols, also removal and adding of the libraries. * No sync library x with yBSD either, please. I'm sure I forgot something anyway ... ;) thank you for understanding, -- Hasso Tepper
BIG FAT WARNING about master + pkgsrc HEAD
* Threaded programs are broken after (seems to be trivial) commit 704e9c962d491f4dba31d2922f7a70d92b373d30. The problem seems to be that --version-script didn't work at all so far (it was silently ignored), now with -Wl it does and exposes bugs. * Xorg from pkgsrc HEAD doesn't work at all with Intel hardware. It's due to another serious threading related bug in our libc. Corecode is working on this already AFAIK. So, if you are affected by these, please hold on an update until these are fixed. -- Hasso Tepper

Re: pkg_dry on DragonFlyBSD
Steve O'Hara-Smith wrote: Like kqemu it's a kernel module with only one client, kqemu is only used by qemu and the DRM kernel module is only used by the Xorg server. They are both bridge modules with one end of their interfaces determined by the client (and thus not under the control of the DragonFly project) and one end determined by the kernel interfaces of DragonFly. Both of these interfaces are subject to change over time. There is many things not under control of the DragonFly project. There may well come a time for either of these where there are two incompatible versions extant supporting two actively used versions of their client (think around a major version bump). This situation just isn't acceptable. It isn't acceptable even for Linux (as DRM upstream). It would be much easier to maintain multiple active versions in the pkgsrc framework than in the kernel source tree. Have you tried it? How do you manage kernel interface changes? It isn't hypothetical, DRM depends closely on many things in kernel (agp(4), pci(4)). How do you manage having pkgsrc package files outside of pkgsrc prefix? -- Hasso Tepper

lang/gcc34 in the pkgsrc
I hacked a lang/gcc34 to build on DragonFly. My brief tests show that at least C and C++ compilers are working as well. Note, that it's about current master only, it doesn't build on 2.2. The idea is to remove gcc34 from the base after the next release. So please, if you are interested in having working gcc3, test it out and report problems. -- Hasso Tepper
Maintaining stuff in pkgsrc (Was: Consequences of major libc changes)
Matthew Dillon wrote: No third-party program should depend upon sys/queue.h, it isn't a standard header file for ANY system. I think the solution is for the third party program to have its own copy that works for it. Well. I'm not against it if someone else does it. I'm already tired of fixing stuff because of DragonFly way of doing things. Please, if you want to have any person doing this work I've done in pkgsrc during last year, don't do these things any more: * Moving headers without very good reason (a la dev/* - bus/*). It might be logically correct, but causes major headache for thirdparty software. * Renaming headers without very good reason (a la disklabel.h - disklabel32.h). Preserving 32 bit stuff in disklabel.h wasn't an option? Also sys/ata.h - sys/nata.h ... * Renaming members in structures, ioctl's etc etc without very good reason. Again disklabel changes are examples, but also struct kinfo_proc changes. With all these examples damage is already done, but let's try to avoid this in future. -- Hasso Tepper

Consequences of major libc changes
A short list of problems based on first bulk build ... * It introduced some new _POSIX defines in unistd.h which are clearly wrong for us - _POSIX_BARRIERS and _POSIX_SPIN_LOCKS are such examples. I hope that Peter will fix these ASAP, but ... Although libthread_xu implements barriers, we can't use these because libc_r doesn't. In fact it's the main reason why I vote fro libc_r removal. Any takers for this task? There are some more stuff besides spinlocks which is mandatory nowadays we don't implement yet. Any takers for this task? * There is major problem with DragonFly that too many packages need patching to include unistd.h - especially stuff using C++, but C packages as well. This might be right thing to do, but I still would like to avoid it. Any ideas? * Most of strings related stuff is now at string.h and strings.h is for BSD only stuff as needed. But it's problem for packages that in NetBSD strings.h includes string.h, and not vice versa, as DragonFly also did before libc changes. Now DragonFly doesn't any more. Maybe we should reintroduce this include? I'm sure there are more problems, but so far so good. -- Hasso Tepper

Quick HAMMER notes
I have finally my laptop on HAMMER and would like to share some quick notes. Please forgive me if these topics are already covered in the past, I've ignored most of HAMMER threads so far ;). * locate(1) database doesn't ignore hammer snapshots? Can we do something about it? * Finding out how should I really access historical data in filesystem isn't easy. It took some time to find out about 'undo -i' and that it's the thing I'm looking at all (Generate a single line ... ?), the point of the 'hammer history' is still mystery for me. * Some unclear things in undo manpage ... It should be mentioned in manpage that the current version isn't in the output of the 'undo -i'. I remember from somewhere that it's normal that some iterations of the file history can give you an empty file, it should be mentioned in BUGS section of the undo(1) IMHO. * Relationship between (no)history and snapshots wasn't clear for me in the beginning. Also ... What's the difference between 'nouhistory' and 'nohistory'? What all these flags on chflags(1) do at all? * Who was the guy writing IO scheduler? We really need that, I happened to do some work when cleanup was started :(. -- Hasso Tepper

I think packages should compile against a symbolic link(libidn.so) to libidn that doesnt have the version in it. And if the library contains API/ABI incompatible change? Can we do something about this? Not really unless you don't want to put significant resources making pkgsrc much better regarding update procedure. Qemu 0.10.0 HOWTO
Seems I'm not very good at explaining things and many of you have problems with qemu ;). What works at the moment is upstreams' trunk - ie. development branch from qemu subversion repo. But as it seems to be broken often etc, here is short HOWTO for 0.10.0. * Grab and unpack the qemu tarball: http://download.savannah.gnu.org/releases/qemu/qemu-0.10.0.tar.gz * Grab and apply the patch: http://leaf.dragonflybsd.org/~hasso/qemu-0.10.0-dragonfly.patch * ./configure --disable-bsd-user --extra-cflags=-I/usr/pkg/include \ --extra-ldflags=-L/usr/pkg/lib (You might want to disable sdl support as well with --disable-sdl if you don't want it.) * gmake * gmake install Enjoy! -- Hasso Tepper

Thanks to corecode for patches. I pushed these into upstream and current trunk (rev 6790) compiles and works on DragonFly now. You have to disable BSD usermode emulation targets though (--disable-bsd-user). Please test, report the problems (with patches, please ;) etc. I'll try to take care of pkgsrc ports as well if it will be updated to 0.10.0 and also trying to push patches into upstreams' stable branch. happy hacking, -- Hasso Tepper

Qemu on DragonFly
There has been several developers stating that they are using qemu on DragonFly, but I don't think that users and other developers have seen any working qemu on DragonFly ;(. There was also the problem with qemu needing GCC3. Qemu 0.10.0 was released yesterday: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2009-03/msg00154.html It doesn't need GCC3 any more! So, developers who have patched their local checkouts to run on DragonFly - please at least send your qemu patches to me so others can benefit from this work as well. I can take care of pkgsrc and pushing patches to the upstream. Thank you, -- Hasso Tepper
Re: 1 week until Summer of Code application time
Simon 'corecode' Schubert wrote: I don't really see the benefit in this. Either you combine forwarding tables into one table, or you... well, that's actually it. I guess the larger part is more on a control plane level than on a data plane level, so that would more be a xorp project, I guess. I might also miss the point completely. Control plane is a trivial part, really. Forwarding plane part is much harder. Proper virtual router support as used nowadays massively (yes, really) in ISP's needs: * Completely isolated forwarding tables (this includes L2 info) - you just associate an interface with virtual router. * Sockets associated with virtual router. A process can create a socket listening 0.0.0.0:179 in particular virtual router only. Ideally some mechanism to associate a process with virtual router - all sockets created by process will be associated with this virtual router then. * The ability to reuse IP addresses and TCP/UDP ports in virtual routers. Different virtual routers can have overlapping addresses and different processes using overlapping ports. * Mechanism to forward traffic between virtual routers (and full control over the traffic). With this in place, making control plane software to support it, is quite straightforward. I have done this once although in limited way on top of Linux forwarding tables (which are lame in routing point of view, btw) with Quagga. regards, -- Hasso Tepper
Re: The state of DragonFly and pkgsrc 2008Q4
Matthias Schmidt wrote: We should adopt the following policy: Before someone commits some big diff (like the mentioned one) or some stuff that breaks the API/whatever, the diff should be applied to clean machine which runs a full pkgsrc bulk build. If the build fails, there is enough time to fix occurring problems and rebuild. Once the bulk build runs fine, the diff can be committed to master. This takes some time and delays the introduction of new features, but it should save us from broken pkgsrc builds ... We have no resources for such tests and to fix things constantly ;). What I'd like to see though is kind of userspace API/ABI freeze. Not really hard freeze, but no such changes as introducing the reentrant functions was, no messing with hiding/disclosing stuff in headers (a la hey, make it more standard compilant), no sync library libx with xBSD commits etc, please. We target our releases to end of January and to end of July. Q2 is released in the end of June and Q4 is released in the end of December. I think that it's reasonable to have soft API/ABI freeze two months before DragonFly release? It would leave a month to fix problems in pkgsrc. Q1 and Q3 pkgsrc releases will be targeted to work on latest stable. It doesn't mean that these will not work on HEAD, they do mostly, but I at least don't make any extra effort fo that. -- Hasso Tepper
