finally, success. not sure if this has anything to do with it but i manually downloaded both the flex & AIR SDK zip files into the installer cache. the nightly build (0.90) also installed ok. thanks.

Paul, I don't remember if the installer leaves the download around, but maybe you can run your own MD5 on it and see if it matches the MD5 on our distribution server [1]. Also check your installer.log to see which mirror was used. Sometimes a mirror can get a bad copy. [1]
