If it's working as originally intended it wouldn't classify as a bug, but it
can be a good feature request, to add another switch to open them in editing
regardless of the extension.

sue... Have you tried disabling any advanced stuff (like compiz or kde
desktop effect) ?
Also, if you're using the libreoffice-kde integration package, try without
it to see if the issue remain...

Libreoffice does not use qt, so it's normal that it don't follow your system
settings. There is a libreoffice-kde package on debian to do this; maybe
there is an equivalent thing available on opensuse.

mentionning that there will be libreoffice available from official debian
repositories soon.
However, like with Ubuntu, I don't know if they will replace openoffice or
coexist. But I believe that being available is more important.
