document to pdf some of these references had changed. After saving the
document and reopening it the references were still wrong. I tried to

-shift-v (without any formatting) and
do all formatting again. This is less frustrating. When I need to save
as a MS format I do this, but never lose the original .odt format. I now
never even edit the .doc files I made this way myself, but use the .odt
document for all editing.
