I expected that after closing the last open document and exiting the macro, either the desktop would display or OpenOffice would end. Leaving OpenOffice running with no GUI to access it feels a bit tricky The user then needs to start a second copy of OO and manually kill the running copy.

AndrOpenOffice (AOO) is not an Apache OpenOffice project. If it were it would be on the Apache OpenOffice SVN, the bugzilla, there'd be release votes, etc. There is no indication that AndrOpenOffice is even open source, although there is apparently significant (non-GPL) open source content.
