Re: [libreoffice-users] profiles

2014-10-14 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
When you install a new version of LibreOffice it usually picks up on your
old user-profile. It's only when you go from 3.x.x to 4.x.x that a new
profile is created.

So the macro should have been automatically picked up by the new install.

That is part of the whole point of User Profiles = that a new install picks
up all your configurations and settings.

So, i don't know what has gone wrong. It might be worth exploring the path
to your user-profile to see if you have somehow been given a new one.

Re: [libreoffice-users] profiles

2014-10-14 Thread Cley Faye
Usually, moving/renaming profiles is very scarcely done, only in case
something goes wrong. Most of the time LibreOffice do a good job of
updating it.

Anyway, most of the actual content of the profile (macro, template, and
other stuff) can either directly be saved outside of it, and even if it's
not, each file/directory can be moved around without trouble. The only
thing that is quite hard to extract (and usually, the cause of issue) is
the registryModifications.xcu file, which contain almost all custom
configuration.

[libreoffice-users] parallel text in side by side pages

2014-10-14 Thread Marc Grober
Is there is technical solution to running parallel text in side by side
pages (the best example would be a text with a translation where you
have the original on one page and the translation on the facing page.
This is done easily enough in columns, but there must be some way to
pass two threads of raw text to a section in which one thread is passed
only to odd pages and the other only to even pages, or are we stuck
with alternating the text manually and inserting a gazillion page breaks?

I don't think columns works for this, as text in the first column
flows to the next column on the same page, not to the same column on
another page. You'd use a two-column table to display parallel
material on single pages, I think. (I do.)

One possible technique is to use linked frames. You could put a
page-sized frame into each page (anchored to the page) and then link
appropriate frames together. In fact, you could get away with doing
this for just one set of pages, perhaps putting frames into all the
right pages and linking them all together in a chain. Your left and
right page text would then flow as you need. You might find this as
tedious as having all those manual page breaks, but it has the
advantage that as you edit the text, the two streams will flow
naturally between their respective pages.

Here's another thought. How about creating two separate documents and
printing them both single-sided as separate print runs on the same
stack of paper? You could display both documents together on the
screen whilst you were editing them.

There may be neater solutions. I'm thinking vaguely of setting a page
size to represent a double-page spread, using a two-column table, and
somehow getting it to print across two pages - so one column appears
on each page. But I'm not sure how ...

I trust this helps.

 I think that page styles will do it. Open an untitled document in
Writer. Use the F4 key to open the Styles and Formating Window. Click
the Page Styles icon at the top of this window. Double click First
Page from the lists of page styles to apply this style to the page.
Then right click First Page and select Modify from the context menu.
Change the Next Style property to Left Page. Click OK.
 This should do it. Enter the original text on the left pages and
the translations on the right pages.
 The reason this works is because of styles. They insure that each
left page is followed by a right page which is followed by a left
page... Writer is designed to begin with the first page on the right, so
you need the First Page to fulfill this need. From then on the left
and right pages will follow correctly. (No page breaks are needed.)
 In the bottom right corner of the Writer window are three icons of
pages. The one of the right is the one you should click if it is not
highlighted. This places two pages in the window beginning with a right
page first followed by a left right page combination.

Re: [libreoffice-users] parallel text in side by side pages

2014-10-14 Thread Marc Grober
a quick top note ... yes, being able to use a Master Doc such that two
files can be displayed at the same time on facing pages might well solve
my problem, but frankly I can't figure out how to manage that
 I don't think columns works for this, as text in the first column
 flows to the next column on the same page, not to the same column on
 another page. You'd use a two-column table to display parallel
 material on single pages, I think. (I do.)
They can -- you can run columns in parallel and then just pour the two
different sets of text into two different columns and then just break
the flow as necessary.

That is an intriguing idea -- unfortunately the docs suggest that the
linked frames have to all be manually created and anchored, so yes,
this is almost as much trouble as alternating the text, though it does
offer the benefits... I guess I might want to do the same thing on the
facing page though it would not be necessary just to maintain style
consistency between the treatments. I there a way to automate an
anchorage frame in a new page by a page style? That way I could create
a new subdoc with that style, add pages, link frame and pour in the text
files into their respect frames
 Here's another thought. How about creating two separate documents and
 printing them both single-sided as separate print runs on the same
 stack of paper? You could display both documents together on the
 screen whilst you were editing them.
Not happening
 There may be neater solutions. I'm thinking vaguely of setting a page

 somehow getting it to print across two pages - so one column appears
 on each page. But I'm not sure how ...
That is something I think could be done with a master document (but I am
not sure how) which is really what I was looking for when I posted the
question in the first place ;-)

I was thinking that two sub docs could be place on side by side pages in
the master doc, with one sub doc only appearing on odd pages, and the
other appearing on even pages...

BUT the documentation on Master Docs is not all that helpful, there is
only one template on the LO site which is not all that explanatory, and
what is present makes it look like a project of such complexity that one
would not want to bother, lol

Anyone have enough expertise with Master Documents to address this?

 This can also be done with a form in Base. The simple way is to
have two fields in a table: the recipe name, and a text box to contain
all of the writing. Then create a form from this table. The field for
the recipe names can be sorted alphabetically. This sorting is done
automatically any time the form is opened, refreshed, or new recipe added.

   You're not alone -
   I too have not figured out the page numbering system;
  [I gave up when templates were mentioned]

   But there are simple solutions although not necessarily efficient;
  either (1) wait until the paper is finished then insert manually;
   or (2) insert manually as you write - in this method you'll
have to redo the numbering at times ;-)

   or (3) skip the numbering ;-)

Now I created, following your advice a new one (called firstP and get that
style for the ENTIRE book.
Trying to select pages and apply a page style (ANY) does not work.
And even though I get a page 1 after the manual break, the three pages
before that are still numbered 1-3.

So far everything is either ALL or NONE. No selection possible.
Where am I missing what?

[libreoffice-users] date acceptance patterns not sticking

2014-10-14 Thread bunk3m

Libreoffice is driving me nuts.

I am in Canada. UI is set to English US; Locale settings to English
Canada and Default Currency is CAD.

I have my Mac set dates to dd.mm.. (OSX 10.9.x)

For some reason Libreoffice (4.3.1.2) will only accept dates in the
-MM-DD format.

I'm happy that I can format the date to look DD.MM. but entering in
the -MM-DD is totally unnatural for me.

Actually, I only usually type the DD.MM and expect the to show up
automatically in Excel. I'd like the same behaviour in LO if possible.

The date acceptance patterns will not accept anything except what is
loaded by default ... which is

D.M.;DD-MM-;D-M

I don't want to have to type the each time for D.M..

I've tried to add D.M to the acceptance pattern but the text turns red
and won't save. The D.M is always gone after trying to save.

So if the date acceptance patterns are supposed to be customizable by
the user ...

what do I have to do to get this to work?

Thanks in advance.

See if this works:

*How do I make my first page a cover or title page and start page

1.

   Open a new Writer document.

2.

   Enter some or all of the text that you want on your cover page (or
   simply press the Enter key a few times).

3.

   Press F11 to open the Styles and Formatting window. Choose Page
   Styles from the icons (hover with your pointer on each icon to open
   the note). Double-click on First Page for assigning the First
   Page style to the first page of your document.

4.

   Place the cursor at the end of the first page. Select Insert-Manual
   Break from the menu bar.

5.

   Select Page Break. Then choose the style to use for the next page
   (pick one from the menu - such as Default). Then mark the check
   box called Change page number. In the box below this check box the
   number 1 should appear. Click OK.

6.

   Now you should have two pages. Put the cursor in the second page,
   then select Insert-Footer-Default from the menu bar. A footer area
   will appear on the second page.

7.

   To insert the page number, select: Insert-Fields-Page Numbers. A
   number '1' should appear on the second page of the file.

Try this:

right click on a cell
select Format Cells
in category choose User Defined
in Format code enter:  00.00.2014

Then you can go to that cell and enter for example: 2512 and it should
display as 25.12.2014.

A couple of things to remember. This looks like a date but I don't
think you could do date math with it. I do this all the time but I just
need it to visually look like a date. Also in 86 years you will need to
rewrite it.

Of course! So i'm definitely on Ubuntu 12.04 then.

Errr, just occurred to me i could reattach as ods. Only the o.p. will get
the attachment, of course. I've never heard of sylk files before. The
ending was the same as other .xls files but i gather that they usually use
.slk instead.

Saving as .ods dropped file-sizes from 86-90 Kb down to under 20 Kb.
Renaming the file-ending to .zip showed both looking almost identical. The
contents.xml didn't get colour-coded by GEdit even when i switched between
different mark-up interpreters.

So, i am completely clueless as usual! Just hope the ods files help

[libreoffice-users] Writer 4.6.2.3 Failure With Word Document

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice forks

2014-10-14 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I don't know of one. Also i doubt it'd be fully comprehensive. Part of
the point of OpenSource is that anyone can take and modify the program for
their own private use, or for their company, or whatever. If people keep
it private then we might not ever hear about it.

Forks that i know of are;
* Neo Office - for Macs, costs money but now that LIbreOffice works on
Macs i'm not sure if it's still being developed
* Go-oo - for various distros such as Ubuntu, openSuSE but this got
re-merged into LibreOffice main branch
* Lotus Symphony - by IBM but they gave a huge code donation to Apache
OpenOffice so i'm not sure if it's still being developed as an independent
program

There are tons of other programs and suites that use the same formats
natively or as an option (even not counting the 1 company that seems to
have trouble implementing the format). It'd be easier to get a list of
those programs  office-suites.
Regards from
Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Writer 4.6.2.3 Failure With Word Document

2014-10-14 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
The macros are very specific to that 1 specific version of MS Office. To
use the file in MSO 2007 or 2013 or 365 then you might need to have the
macro rewritten.

If you had them rewritten for LibreOffice then you probably wouldn't ever
need to rewrite them again, except to add improvements or the fairly rare
times that a relevant bit of functionality got completely rewritten in a
different way.

Is there any chance of posting the macro's code into an email for this
public mailing list to have a look at? People sometimes have suggestions
about what might need to be changed or even some coding suggestions
sometimes!

When Writer crashes it used to often be due to Java. Is it possible to
turn java off for a bit?
Tools - Options - Advanced/Java
and then untick the box that enables java in LibreOffice. If the program
grumbles about it then you can always switch it back on the same way.

Another possibility is the memory settings
Tools - Options - Memory
and just ramp everything up quite a lot. Maybe not the number of steps you
can take back but the amount of ram per object and the total ram allowed
for the whole document seem like good ones to increase!

Regards from
Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice forks

2014-10-14 Thread Bruce Byfield
Fork is a free software term for a project that branches off from an existing
project to develop the code in its own way. For example, LibreOffice is a fork
of OpenOffice.org.

The term's been in use for at least 20 years, so I didn't think twice about
using it.

As an example, go there:
https://github.com/watabou/pixel-dungeon

See in the upper-right corner the term Fork :)

It's almost used in a literal way: at one point in the life of a project,
someone decided to go in another direction, like a fork on a road

It's a common term for using the source of free software to make
changes - either by oneself or as a group - and carrying on without
necessarily being tied to or compatible with the previous developers
or their product. So LibreOffice is a fork of OpenOffice.org and so is
Apache OpenOffice.

Its been two or three years since I've seen a comprehensive list.
Offhand, the only programs I can think of are:
* NeoOffice;
* AndroOpenOffice;
* EuroOffice;
* LibreOffice;
* Apache Open Office;

Lotus Symphony was rolled into Apache OpenOffice. I don't think it exists as a
separate program anymore.
GoOo was rolled into LibreOffice. I don't think it exists as a separate program
anymore;

I don't know what the status of RedOffice is.

The other forks I am aware of, have either been abandoned, or rolled back into
either LibO, or AOo.

I suspect that there were a number of forks that never got on anybody's radar:
* CD/DVD only distribution as budget software;
* Vector software for Trojan droppers;
* SoHo support companies that rebranded the software, to preserve their
contract/business model;
* Instant download vendors;
