Calc can be a little slow IME sometimes, but not that slow! Even opening
multiple sites at once, which I occasionally do, doesn't take more than I'd
guess around 15 seconds or so.
What if you copy all the same links into Writer and use them from there?
Any difference?

Have you disabled or deleted all your prefetch entries by any chance?
Unlikely I guess, but it's all that comes to mind right now. Ten minutes is
outlandish by any standards IMO unless there's a glitch in Calc. You could
check the bug list at the LO site.

I tested a bit and it seems that the time depends on how big the source
files are.
-1) If I open a CALC or a WRITER file with 10 links to 10 *10Kb* CALC
files (in total 100 links) it asks me to update links, I answer YES, it
takes about few seconds.

2-) If I open a CALC or a WRITER file with 10 links to 10 *800Kb* CALC
files (in total 100 links) it asks me to update links, I answer YES, it
takes about 1 minute, and it is accettable.

3-) If I open a CALC (attached) file with 10 links to 10 *10Kb* CALC
files (in total 100 links) it asks me to update links, I answer NO, then
I expand formulas in the 100 cells (for expand I intend dragging the
small black square in the lower right angle of B2 cell first
horizontally (it takes few seconds) then vertically in the resulting
selection) it takes about *1 minute*, and it accettable

4-) If I open a CALC (attached) file with 10 links to 10 *800Kb* CALC
files (in total 100 links) it asks me to update links, I answer NO, then
I expand formulas in the 100 cells it takes about *9 minutes*, and it
seems to me too much :-)

[libreoffice-users] RE: Converting Works Files

2011-04-03 Thread Edwin Powell
I haven't had occasion to try it with LibreOffice yet, but I have
opened a few .wps files in NeoOffice, which incorporates Go-oo code as
does LibreOffice. The only problem I had was that it strips out
formatting (double-spacing, centered text, etc.) so it's at best an
imperfect solution.

as far as I know, OpenOffice.org or LibreOffice cannot open .wps
files. If you still have Works on your computer, you might want to
save your documents as .doc or .rtf.

[libreoffice-users] Bug in Impress

2011-04-03 Thread Stefan Th. Gries
In OpenOffice, one could

- highlight a slide in the slide pane, press CTRL-C, and insert the
copied slide with CTRL-V - in LibreOffice that doesn't work, rather,
whatever was in the clipboard gets inserted into the currently
highlighted slide in the main central window;
- highlight a slide in the slide sorter, press CTRL-C, and insert the
copied slide with CTRL-V - in LibreOffice that doesn't work, rather,
nothing happens, even if one does copying an pasting with
right-clicks, marks a position between slides etc.

The only thing that works as it should is dragging and dropping the
to-be-repeated slide while pressing CTRL. This is not particularly
intuitive and definitely an unnecessary step down from OpenOffice.

[libreoffice-users] Serious memory issues in Calc

2011-04-03 Thread Stefan Th. Gries
I am using Ubuntu 10.10 64bit, fully updated etc. on two machines with
each 3GB RAM, one with a 3-core AMD processor, the other with an Intel
Core Duo. For a research project, I needed to handle a large
tab-separated text file with 6 columns and approximately 60 rows
(approx. 85MB as txt, about 35.7MB as ods). This raised the following
problems:

- it takes forever to open it in LibreOffice.org Calc and automatic
column-wise replacements killed the system repeatedly - but when I do
the exact same thing in my Windows 7 virtual box, which I gave 1.5GB
of RAM, that takes about ten seconds and it's done.

- Then I want to copy and paste the file from a spreadsheet into a
text file (the saving caused problems with text delimiters, don't
ask). First, highlighting the whole data and press CTRL-C makes
LibreOffice go down for minutes; the virtual box with Excel doesn't
even flinch, does it right away. Second, so I copy from Excel and want
to paste into gedit. Doesn't do it for 2 minutes or so - in the
virtual box, I open Notepad++, paste it, 5 seconds later, done!

- Then I open the file in gedit for some cleaning up. Everything, like
replacing double spaces by single ones, takes forever. Right now I
have been waiting 10 minutes for a replacement of \r\n by \n and
gedit is just dead in the water (yes, System Monitor says it's still
working, but jeses, how long is that gonna take).

Seriously, I am the most ardent defender of open source etc. but this
is ridiculous. I remember doing all this stuff on Win XP (I moved to
Linux when Vista came) in no time at all, now, a few years later, with
a computer that has 3 times as much RAM as I had back then, and a
brand new open source OS, I have to go back to some frakking virtual
box with Windows 7 to get some text processing and spreadsheet stuff
done??

Re: [libreoffice-users] Problem with Impress.

2011-04-03 Thread Troy Schulz
Ok. I manually imported an image. I then stretched it to take up the
full size of the slide. I then sent to back. I saved it and re-opened it
and it appears now.

However, in my mind, we shouldn't have to do it that way. It's a pain
and not very intuitive. We should be able to just change the background
on a slide by slide basis.

On 04/01/2011 12:30 PM, Daniel A. Rodriguez wrote:

So are you saying not to replace the background on those slides but instead
import the image as a picture and then send it to back?

as I said on previous message my problem was related to master pages,
in that case setting a different background on each master page didn't
work. But importing the images and then send them to back did. So,
give it a try and tell us.
