I would check the default printer settings and test the printer with another non-LO program to see if the problem is with the printer set up. The printer could be set up to default everywhere to pdf not to postscript. Let me clarify a few things. I first noticed this when printing to a Laserjet 4M+. I also have a 5SiMx, an 8000DN, and a Xerox Phaser 7400DN. The problem happens with most of them. And I have several printers installed for each physical printer, and it doesn't matter which one I select. I always get text with the font metrics messed up. I could wipe out Fedora 16 and install Linux Mint, but the last time I changed distros it took almost a week to get everything reinstalled and reconfigured back the way I had it. I have a zillion programs installed, some of which took hours of tweaking to get them running. And I require these programs for my work. So, for now at least, I'm stuck with Fedora 16. Besides, I don't think the problem is in Fedora. From reading others' responses it appears that all we need to do is change the default from PDF to Postscript. I should add that just today I discovered another problem. I needed to print six copies of a one-page document (to give a paper copy to six different people). I remembered to check Postscript, but when the copies came out of the printer copy 2 was on the back of copy 1, copy 4 on the back of copy 3, and copy 6 on the back of copy 5. The only ways I can find to stop this behavior were to print one copy and click on the Print button six times, or disable the duplexer in the printer and try to remember to re-enable it afterward. LAME. But I will post this under another thread later. Access is named Access because you can access databases with it. In *addition* Access provides the JET database engine which embeds a database backend in the frontend file. Unfortunately, most people work with JET which is why Access has a bad reputation among professionals. I've seen very nice Access frontends for MySQL databases. We use LO base and MySQL also with very nice results :-) Base connects ODF documents with databases. In *addition* it can embed a HSQLDB into the frontend file which is basically a zip archive with configuration and Writer documents. Unfortunately, most people use the embedded HSQLDB which is why Base has such a bad reputation. If you ever had created some relational database backend using any database specific, mature tool for the database, you would acknowledge how straight-forward Base connects your database with this office suite. Simply do your database with a database program. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Printer always selects PDF instead of Postscript
Hi :) When i upgrade my OS i keep the existing one working and just set a new partition for the new one. Generally for me it's a 3 step process 1. Create a largish partition, say 20Gb for something bloated (like Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, openSUSE etc) (err bloat = more functionality built-in so it's not always bad). Install the new thing with it's /home on the same partition. Test it, update it, tweak and play around and perhaps even make a complete mess of it. After install i set the boot-menu to default to my working distro not the one i am test-driving. 2. Install to an old tiny partition but during install set /home to use my vast partition (relatively). Again set the boot-menu to my older but fully functioning distro that i am familiar with. 3. When i am happy about the new one i switch the boot-menu to the newer one. So, i always default into something i know works well enough for me and familiar enough that i can meet deadlines without having to deal with unexpected surprises, well mostly. I have even managed to do this with Windows but GnuLinux tends to make it easy or even wants to do it that way by default. Back when i was a bit of a distro-hopper i sometimes had to scavenge hard-drives from old 'dead' machines in order to get space for a new partition. Even the most bloated distro can fit on ancient crumbling drives that no respectable person would normally consider using. Hmm, well i do have a 100 MB hard-drive somewhere and a 1 or 2Gb one but they are really museum pieces. Running LO 3.4.3 OOO340m1 (Build:302) on Ubuntu 11.04 (Linux 2.6.38-generic-pae) w/ Gnome 2.32.1. Find myself having to cope with some very strange behavior of paragraph styles, not previously encountered in any version of OOo. I defined my 'Default' style as follows: font Ubuntu 12 regular, no indents, single spacing, 0.00 before and after, justified. As I begin a new document and type a one-line paragraph, then press Return to start a new paragraph, all is OK. If I press Return once more (adding an empty line), the previous paragraph gets indented without any prompting! When I go back to the previous paragraph with ArrowUp, the style changes - without any prompting! - to Text Body... If I go back to the beginning of any Default or Text Body paragraph and press Return twice, the paragraph is transformed into text that is both bold and increased in size... All of this, though, merely scratches the surface of my paragraph-style misadventures in LO. It's enough to drive me insane, to the point where I'm seriously considering returning to one of the recent versions of OpenOffice. FWIW i DID carefully read the manual on styles and templates. Like I said: no problems in OOo, a disaster in LO. As an aside: can anyone tell me what difference there is between 'Default' and 'Text body'? Can anyone offer any suggestions on how to correct / troubleshoot this? This will import the required placeholders on the fly and you can arrange these database fields like any other type of Writer field. Then you start printing and confirm that you are going to print a serial letter. In the next dialog you may restrict the incoming row set by some filter or manual selection and you may choose to print into another Writer document. If you need some fixed filters (for instance all rows where name, zip, city and address are not empty), then you may add a query to the database document and use the query instead of the table. This is where it becomes very convenient that Base provides a database view on your spreadsheet tables. -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

Wow! Just to be absolutely crystal clear, when you say If you need some fixed filters (for instance all rows where name, zip, city and address are not empty), then you may add a query to the database document and use the query instead of the table. You are saying that it is possible to mailmerge using a query to supply the data? I know that's what it looks like you said, but there's just been a long thread here that concluded this was not possible, so I'm just checking. If so, is it new (3.4.5) functionality? Re: [libreoffice-users] Problems with format in Calc
2012/2/2 Tom Davies tomdavie...@yahoo.co.uk: Hi :) Ouch. I don't know how to get rid of the comma :( Is it even possible? I have a feeling that it would involve a horribly complicated line continuing after the in order to try to get it to do a backspace. Even if it's possible it's likely to be best avoided. I had no comma, but I did some fiddling with it and found that there is a comma if the language is set to English (US). Language set to English (Great Britain) does not produce a comma, nor does Swedish (my default language). Anyway, English (US) displays ”wednesday,” but NNN displays only ”wednesday”, so that's probably how to get rid of the comma, if there is one… Kind regards Johnny Rosenberg ジョニー・ローゼンバーグ Perhaps post a bug-report/'feature request'? [libreoffice-users] Refencing calc results in writer
I'm trying to do some calculations in writer that are more complex than the formulas that are provided in the tables. I'm forced to resort to calc for those formulas. I'm trying to figure out how to incorporate the results into a table in writer. So far all I've been able to figure out is how to display the results, that is the cell in calc with the formula results, in the writer table. I would like to be able to reference the results in my table in writer. For example to include the results of the calculation in a total in another cell of the table. So far all I'm able to do is to get an image of the calc cell, but it won't let me reference it in my table. Any ideas? Re: [libreoffice-users] How to Enable Thesaurus
Try this one; Download this British English [You did want British English correct?] dictionary that has a Thesaurus built into it. Then install it [with the Extension Manager]. Then see if you have a Thesaurus. IF you do, then you did not have a working one installed that LO can use. http://libreoffice-na.us/English-3.4-installs/add-on-dictionaries-large-list/kpp-british-english-dictionary-390K-word-list.oxt The American version is what I use with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Actually this file comes from my work trying to make a set of good English dictionaries for LO. If you decide it works for you, go to the Extension Center and decide which British English [American, or Canadian version as well] you would like to use. http://extensions.libreoffice.org/extension-center/american-british-canadian-spelling-hyphen-thesaurus-dictionaries On 02/02/2012 07:47 PM, Jay Lozier wrote: On 02/02/2012 06:41 PM, Thomas Damratowski wrote: Works running Windows 7 LibreOffice 3.4.5 OOO340m1 (Build:502) On Thu, Feb 2, 2012 at 4:57 PM, Mick Sulleym...@sulley.info wrote: Running - LibreOffice 3.3.4 OOO330m19 (Build:401) tag libreoffice-3.3.3.1, Ubuntu package 1:3.3.4-0ubuntu1 Language is English (UK) Which Ubuntu version do you have?
