I don't understand what you mean by new SQL DB? Did you try
creating a new Base database connection with the wizard?

NO - I created my new SQL Database in MyAdmin and then imported all
the fields from the previous time I did this.
But somehow the 'Connection Type' is now available to me BUT still gives
me communication error

Host name should be localhost. - *IT IS*
Port number should be 3306 - *IT IS*
MySQL JDBC driver class should be com.mysql.jdbc.Driver if you are
using JDBC.  - *IT IS*
For reference, I am using mysql-connector-java-5.0.7 with MySQL
5.0.67 and LO 3.5.3 . Not the latest, but it works.
Under edit - database - Properties - Advanced Properties, you can
set up the database name and authentication:

I'm using mysql-connector-java-5.1.22, with MySQL 5.1.55, and LO 3.6.2.2

Name of the MySQL database is the name of the database you used

Password required should be checked if you set up a password in

But 'Test Connection' still gives me the Communication Failure!!

This sounds like Base still can't talk to the server through localhost.
The var/lib/mysql Folder is there but is EMPTY(??)! (and has no
permissions) and I can not delete it.

Are you looking at /var/lib/mysql as root? - *NO I WAS NOT!!*

Tried as 'root' and I can now see it - thanks for that!!
Oops! I don't think I told you about mysql_install_db? If not,
that's my bad. I am sorry I left it out. That needs to be run before
anything else, including the mysqld server. Here is the correct
sequence of configuration:

   (set up my.cfg)
   mysql_install_db --user=mysql #creates the databsae structures.
mysqld_safe --user=mysql#script to run the mysqld server.
   NOTE: sometimes called safe_mysqld
   mysql_secure_installation #removes insecure
   files/structures.
mysql --user=root -p mysql #Allows you to create your
   databases, user names, permissions, etc.

No - you did not tell me about this!! So I followed the instructions and
got positive response all the way!!

(set up Base)

Went back to Base - BUT still get the dammed Communication Link
Failure!

I'll go off and read the Post Installation Guide you mentioned and see
if I can spot anything.

This is REALLY getting to be a total PITA - This is the 4th time I've
tried to get this to work in the past 8 months or so. I really DON'T
understand why it has to be such an involved and impossible way to do
something!!!??

But I DO thank you Girvin (and others) who have been trying to help me.

Installing MySQL and getting Base working with it is not trivial, as
you have seen. As far as I know, there is no one document to describe
the process. Now add in all the other database server systems out
there that Base can connect to and it really expands. That is why I
keep notes on what my process is for the time I upgrade my Linux and
have to do it all over again.

I also started a Linux Set-up Document when I started with the OpSys.
I think the first one was one or one and half pages. 4 years on it is
now over 20 pages of notes, methods, tips and tricks!! And *IF* I get
this to work that will add a few more pages!!!

Thanks again and all the best

Re: [libreoffice-users] Win64: Scribus too... :-)

2012-11-04 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)

Are Cpu cycles to do with multi-core/multi-cpu?  If so it's presumably possible
for 32bit apps to take advantage.  I think it's just a fluke that most of us
think that 64bit machines tend to have more than 1 cpu/core and 32bit ones
don't.  Both technologies became well known around the same time.

Apparently the 4Gb Ram limit is a limit of the OS, not the apps.  If the OS can
read/write to more ram then i don't think the apps would be restricted.
Apparently OSes that are 32bit could read more Ram with a different kernel
module.  With GnuLinux it's possible to swap-in the different module and i
kept being told that it's really easy.  Something like the pae-something
module.

Ram is used more efficiently by OpenSource programs, especially when using
quite a few at the same time.  My whole system is OpenSource apart from a few
fonts and a couple of codecs and i seldom need even 1Gb.  Movies and even
fairly hefty games seem quite happy.  I figure that if bits of my ram detiorate
over time then i could always swap the sticks around to use the ones that
aren't getting used at the moment.

If it feels like LO/OO are bumping into ram issues then it's more likely to be
the limits you set (or the default ones) in

Tools - Options - Memory

If you imagine wires or cables as lanes on a motorway then double the number of
lanes can carry double the number of cars.  It's just that you don't always
need to have that many cars on a section of motorway.

IMHO, the practical difference is nil for a typical office use. Some large
databases will require 64 bit because 32 bit is limited to 4 GB.

I'm a Linux user, 64 bits of course, but I have one, 1, count 'em, one
computer that has 64 bit Windows 7 on it.  Then again, there have been
64 bit versions of Linux going back 17 - 18 years and I was running 64

Since Libreoffice is a Office product . I don't believe you will see a big
differential in performance as a user . From a programmer view , you can
take advantage of the cpu cycles and memory usage with a 64bit system.

CPU Cycles is the process the processor takes to complete a command.
Multiple cores came about due to the current CPU overheating above 4GHZ .
So they started adding more cores to the existing processors to give you
more cpu threads to process commands. So in theory you can have a 3GHZ CPU
with dual cores (2 central processing units) to get the result of a 6ghz
processor.

You are correct, the 4GB limit was imposed by the operating system . 64bit
has been around for years, I believe someone else mention this on the
thread, its not new and unix/linux has been using it.

With PAE, the 32 bit CPU can access more that 4 GB, but Microsoft still
limits Windows to 4 GB. With Linux, no there is no such artificial
limitation. IIRC, applications are still limited to 4 GB, as they don't
know how to access more, but the OS can use the greater space and make
it available to the apps. With Linux, recently used stuff is retained
in memory, so that accessing it again is quick. It will eventually be
moved to swap, if not recently used. So, with Linux, the more memory
available, including beyond 4 GB, the faster the system in general runs.

The 64-bit R4000 by MIPS technologies came out in 1992 and was first
used in Silicon Graphics machines, running IRIX the SGI flavour of UNIX.
This processor was 64-bit internally but 32-bit externally so only a
32-bit wide memory-path could be used.Later versions, notably the R8000
(1994) and the R1000 (1996) were 64-bit internally and externally. In
1994 SGI licensed the memory architecture, developed by Cray (which it
bought a few years later) and licensed it, I thought in 2002 to AMD for
its 64-bit processors. This NUMA architecture is much faster than the
standard architecture used in other processors and is much more suitable
for multiprocessor systems.

you, but I still can't test it, so it may still need a bit of work
to get it to work on your system.  If you want to try it, let me
know and I can tarball it and the other files I use to repackage
LO for Slack and send it to you. Note: My SlackBuild script does a
lot more than the usual SlackBuild scripts, but it is commented
     fairly well.

[libreoffice-users] Cannot save data ranges in spreadsheet other than with .ods files

2012-11-04 Thread Subscriptions

I'm using LibreOffice 3.5.4.2 Build ID: 350m1(Build:2) on Ubuntu 11.04

When I create a data range and save that range in the ods format,
everything works as expected.

If I save the file as a MS files (xls or xlsx), the range is not saved
(i,e if I save and close, the range has disappeared if I open the file)

Thanks

Re: [libreoffice-users] Cannot save data ranges in spreadsheet other than with .ods files

2012-11-04 Thread Dr. R. O Stapf

Seems to be a bug. I made a test using XP/SP3 and 3.5.7

Data Range names get lost.

If other it could be confirmed in 3.6 version, a bug report appears to be the
we can do.

[libreoffice-users] bug or missing functionality in Impress/Chart ?

2012-11-04 Thread Dr. R. O Stapf
I wanted to create a chart in Impress
Inserted a chart
Opened the chart data table
So far all fine and as expected

When I wanted to copy data array (2 rows, 5 columns) from Calc into the table,
the data of the array
selected on copied into the clipboard all get pasted into the cell I selected
(top left corner)
Even adjusting the chart data table to exactly the size as the original data
array resulted in all
data in the selected cell in the chart data table.

Is this a bug or a missing functionality in Impress?

The ability to copy and array of data from Calc into the chart data table would
increase productivity.

XP/SP3 LibO 3..5.7

[libreoffice-users] Is it possible to show cell value with text

2012-11-04 Thread dave_
Is it possble to do the following:

Lets say a1 =5, a2=3 and a3=7, now in cell c1 I would like a message to say
Number of errors are + (=sum(a1:a3) +.
Number of errors are 15.

Is this even possible?

Thanks ahead for any suggestions.

2012-11-04 Thread John Clegg
Nice easy one that! You were nearly there:

=Number of errors are(SUM(A1:A3) .)
