[libreoffice-users] Brochure printing doesn't scale to page

2016-11-22 Thread Gordon Burgess-Parker

Hi.
Just tried to post a question on the AskLO forum page. I don’t think I’ll use
that again - I need “points” to post a picture (WHY?) and the link to a picture
is totally un-intuitive.

Using Version: 5.2.2.2 Build ID: 8f96e87c890bf8fa77463cd4b640a2312823f3ad on
MAC OS Sierra, with Epson WF 2660 printer
Two problems here. 1. In Print>Paper Handling the suggested paper size is US
Legal, although every setting I can find is UK and A4. Why is this?
2. The brochure prints ok, but the text is reduced in size, i.e. doesn't fit
the page as in the attached picture link.
How do I get a) the suggested paper size to A4, and b) how to get the pages to
appear full-size in the brochure?

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0Vw7ioE7vbrVnJFakV1SHBLUmc/view?usp=sharing

Thanks
Gordon

Try adding "http" to the Ignore section of spell checking.

need to know is that it doesn't contain any sort of mail or PIM client.

I am now (as of Sept 2015) an OU student and am of limited means, so The 'Open
University Computing Helpdesk’ advised me that I could try Libre Office - as
it is free and will ‘do’ whatever Microsoft Office is capable of ‘doing’ in
respect of what I NEED it to be capable of ‘doing’, in order to create any and
all documents, essays, assignments, projects, etc for my B.A.(Hon’s) History
degree course.

Is it the case that Libre Office is as 'feature packed' as Ms Office, or are
there some important features that will be missing from Libre Office when
compared to Ms Office?
If the Helpdesk say it's fine to use LO, then it's fine to use LO!
You'll find that unless you need to create extremely complex formatted
document, then LibreOffice WILL do everything you need.
For "normal" use then LO certainly contains as much functionality as MSO
- indeed when I was a Systems Accountant for two large PLCs, I suspect
that we could have easily used LO instead of MSO!

Good luck!

Trying to open.

First we need to know exactly what happened. Exactly what did you
download, from exactly where? How did you install it (clicking
something or using a terminal)? Some details about your computer would
also be appropriate I think, for instance to figure out if you
selected the right package for your machine.

I downloaded the 64 bit Deb package from libreoffice.org, extracted all
files, right-clicked in the Debs folder and chose open with Terminal.
I then issued the command

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

My computer is an Acer Aspire E3 112 64 bit with 120GB SSD and 4GB RAM

Can anyone throw any light on this bizarre ocurrence?
Why should one machine get LO 5 and the other not?

Those links are to shared images of the Help file and the FormatPage
dialog that I posted! They aren't anything to do with OwnCube documentation.
What error message do you get when trying to access them? They should be
public, which is what the link says...

[libreoffice-users] Writer 4.4.0.3 Help different from actual!

2015-03-16 Thread Gordon Burgess-Parker

LO 4.4.0.3. on Xubuntu 14.10

Looking for help on watermarks, this is what's there in Help:
https://uk.owncube.com/public.php?service=filest=b825d02c15a64c8f8dd98f7ea1639c81

If I then do FormatPage as in the above Help article, I get this:
https://uk.owncube.com/public.php?service=filest=07d7e0193f771d8c12c4074b75caa3e3

and as you can see, there's no Background tab as mentioned in the above
Help item!

Where are Watermarks in 4.4.0.3?

Cheers
Gordon

[libreoffice-users] Installation of 4.4 on Ubuntu has a slight problem

2015-01-29 Thread Gordon Burgess-Parker
On Ubuntu 14.04 32 bit, I purged the existing version of LO, downloaded
the tar.gz for 4.4, and installed as per the /readme
/The install procedure did NOT add the module icons to the launcher - I
had to search for Write, Calc etc and when they were open, lock them to
the launcher.
Now going to install on my 64 bit machine and we'll see if the same
thing happens

here's the definitive guide:
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:All#Dual-Booting_Windows_and_Ubuntu
There's a lot of information on that page.
In Brief:

1. Ensure you have a Windows Recovery media and have backed up all
data. (Not that I've ever had anything go wrong, but you never know!(
2. Download the Ubuntu iso and create a bootable USB stick (or CD/DVD -
the USB stick is more convenient and flexible IMHO).
3. Boot up from the USB stick and you can try Ubuntu without making any
changes to your computer, to see if you like it!
4. If you do, create free disk space on your C drive using Windows Disk
   management.
5. The only slightly complicated thing to do is to create the
partitions - do NOT let the Ubuntu installer do that automatically.

Hope that helps.
the total time to install (depending on your internet connection) should
be 40 minsincluding LibreOfice.

You need to change the file extension back to .msi, and to do THAT, you
need to go into File explorer and turn ON the show file extensions

option turned OF by default.

Good luck!

 * An e-mail interface that clogs my reader.

Can't we find a way to offer support that is easy and convenient? I get
that new groups are considered old fashioned, but they work very well,
and are easy to use (even by kids on cell phones). Open to suggestions,
but I don't think moving to the next hot thing is the answer unless it
is easy to use. My 2 cents anyway.

 Dave,

There's a twitter account.

Most people under the age of thirty don't know what newsgroups are, or
how to access them.
IMHO there's no point in using obsolete media.
You can subscribe to a daily digest instead of individual emails

 2013XXXX
 2014XXXXX

If I just copy and paste and the cells aren't protected by '$' the
cells change accordingly. I don't want that to happen. I want the
formulae to reference the same cells. I just want to move them to
another location. Is there any way to do this?

Yes - add $ to the cell references in the formula - e.g., A2 becomes
$A$2. That means you can move the formula anywhere you want but it will
still reference A2...

See if this works:

*How do I make my first page a cover or title page and start page
numbering (Page 1) on the second page of my document?*

1.

   Open a new Writer document.

2.

Enter some or all of the text that you want on your cover page (or
simply press the Enter key a few times).

3.

Press F11 to open the Styles and Formatting window. Choose Page
Styles from the icons (hover with your pointer on each icon to open
the note). Double-click on First Page for assigning the First
Page style to the first page of your document.

4.

Place the cursor at the end of the first page. Select Insert-Manual
   Break from the menu bar.

5.

Select Page Break. Then choose the style to use for the next page
(pick one from the menu - such as Default). Then mark the check
box called Change page number. In the box below this check box the
number 1 should appear. Click OK.

6.

Now you should have two pages. Put the cursor in the second page,
then select Insert-Footer-Default from the menu bar. A footer area
will appear on the second page.

7.

To insert the page number, select: Insert-Fields-Page Numbers. A
number '1' should appear on the second page of the file.

Hi :)
The documentation team needs 5 chapters to be reviewed, ie checked for
accuracy (not writing anything, usually).

It could be different person for each chapter so you can sign-up to do
just 1 and then see how it goes. If 4 people joined the team we could have
the full guide published in a week or so!

Reviewing is the stage where you just check that when the guide says click
on this that it does what the guide says. Mostly you can probably confirm
just from memory but it's good to click through a random sample just to
check.

Since it's the Writer Guide it's been through a lot of proof-reading and
such so it's likely to be extremely good already.

There is also an opportunity for someone to go through and replace all
screen-shots as most current ones were done in Windows. Generally it's
preferred if screen-shots are done in Mac or Linux (preferably Linux) jic
there are ever any copyright issues. (Apple has less reason than MS to
start anything ridiculous like that. Linux has no copyright issues).

Doing screen-shots is more fun than just straight reviewing but involves a
bit of faffing around so racing through doing a straight review is more
helpful at this stage.

Anyone up for it? If so please join the
documentat...@global.libreoffice.org
mailing list and give a very brief paragraph to let them know something
about why you'd like to help or why you think you'd be good (ie NOT a CV).

Regards from
Tom :)

I'd be happy to give it a go - I'm away now though until next Monday
morning...

[libreoffice-users] Uninstalling LO 4.3.0.4 from Ubuntu 14.04

2014-08-26 Thread Gordon Burgess-Parker
I installed 4.3.0.4 from the deb packages. I now wish to uninstall and
revert to the official Ubuntu-supplied version.

Using either

sudo apt-get remove --purge libreoffice

or

sudo dpkg -P libreoffice

I get the dreaded
dpkg: warning: ignoring request to remove libreoffice which isn't installed

How can I uninstall 4.3.0.4?

Cheers

[libreoffice-users] Send Document as Microsoft Word doesn't

2014-08-25 Thread Gordon Burgess-Parker

LO 4.3.0.4 on Ubuntu 14.04 - Thunderbird as default email client.
In LO Writer, if I click on FileSendEmail as Microsoft Word then it
opens a new message window in TBird, but with no attachment, which
rather negates the function!
I use this facility to be able to keep one format of document on my
machine, rather than having to do a Save As into MS Word format.

Is this a bug in 4.3?

[libreoffice-users] Document locked on other system

2013-08-14 Thread Gordon Burgess-Parker
Trying to open a document which is stored locally and not on a server
and I get this?

Document file 'Forum%20and%20site%20logins.odt' is locked for editing
by yourself on a different system since 18.09.2012 12:32
Open document read-only, or ignore own file locking and open the
document for editing.

How do I fix this?

I looked for that first and couldn't see it.
Re-tried and there it was! (No idea why it didn't appear the first time...)

 Hi :)
Yes, that problem was only in 2010 and 2007 and was due to their
pathetic attempts to use the older ODT (well specifically ods) format
that no-one else was using much at that time because we had all moved
on to the newer version. Their 2013 and 365 uses the newer format so
they don't suffer from that issue (apparently)

but it seems I can not edit a document in officesuite 7 for android, and
then continue to use it in libreoffice. the files are all in docx format
Any time I do, when I return to my PC to continue editing it, i get the
message 'general input / output error' when i try to open the file. no
other error messages happen, and nothing I can do will change the error.
I am using dropbox to synchronize between my pc and my android device. I
used to not have an issue with officesuite and microsoft word. Dropbox
fortunately saves prior copies, and I have been able to recover documents
after editing them mobile.
I have tried using ubuntu and windows 7 for libreoffice, multiple
computers, and multiple android devices running officesuite 7 pro.
Could you suggest anything I can do to try and remedy this issue?
Thank you,
Ian Dalton

I've just created a new docx document in Oficesuite 7 Pro on my Kindle,
saved it to Skydrive, downloaded it on my Netbook running Ubuntu 13.04
with LO 4.1 and opened it with no problems.

(Mind you that was a very simple document)

Extensions/add-ons are a great way of keeping unnecessary features out of the
way of the majority users that never need certain features.

I think the generally used stats are that 80% of users know about less than 20%
of features in MS Office. That's not a different 20% for each user adding up
to 100% amoungst 5 users. It's more the case that if you stripped MSO down to
20% of it's features then 80% of people wouldn't notice anything missing. In
terms of actual usage and from just observations and conversations with
individuals i would agree with Tim about it being more like 1% of features
being used 99% of the time. People tend to not use most of what they know and
they don't know much. They focus on just getting the job done, not on fancy
ways of doing it.

+1 - and that's from many years experience as a Systems/Management

years worked in a company where VBA was used...or macros come to think
of it.
