Und zwar habe ich mein DocumentRoot auf /home/gzimmerm/bilddaten
gesetzt. Steuer ich per Browser das Verzeichnis an, schreibt der Apache
einfach nur Index of /
Wie kann ich ihn dazu bringen, dass er Index of bilddaten anzeigt ?

Nichts weiter? Hat der Apache-user überhaupt Leserechte auf das
Wenn Du Bilddaten angezeigt bekommen möchtest, müsstest Du das Root
auf
/home/gzimmerm setzen.
... womit Du aber nicht unbedingt da landest, wo Du hinmöchtest, denn dieser
index of zeigt natürlich auch alles andere unter gzimmerm an, wenn da
nicht nur der Bildordner ist. Es ist nun mal so,

It's enabled by default, and you have to recompile Apache to
change/disable the behavior.

Jay,
Directory / points to the actual '/' path. It is locked down for
security reasons, and you should not alter it.
To allow access to your server, you should create or alter the
Directory block in your virtual host instead. Look out for the
DocumentRoot directive to know what path to use.
