When you need root access from a terminal type sudo some command and
it will ask for your user password.

in Fedora 11 it changed my FX C2100 DocuPrint ppd to the
HP LaserJet 4 ppd driver and it still worked but then a subsequent
update made it fail and I had to resort to manual install of the
appropriate ppd file as per below.

There is NO truly secure method, other than complete pulverization, to
destroy disk data.
Format the hd with DOS 3.1 or 5 that'll get rid of everything.
And if unsure after that format to ext2.. everything gone.

always broke Virtualbox in Ubuntu 10.4 on my daughter's laptop.

PC system time is correct for Ubuntu.
Changing Fedora time and saving resets Ubuntu time to +10 hours

once you are accustomed to Linux you will likely want to explore and
