but I guess it can't do SSE4.x and has no EFI to support CL !

do you have overlooked the check tool ?

regarding device shipping:

here in germany labdoo has central hubs to collect the devices.

as of labdoo's website:

https://www.labdoo.org/content/hubs-dashboard

there are hubs in the USA too.

so you just need to bring the device to such an hub.
- don't forget the power supply ! -
;-)

the further delivery goes with private people or organizations which
travel to the children's homeland !

so to you it's complete free of charge (except your travel to the hub) !

before that the device will be checked, as you can see with my device
(the last link in my prev. comment)

nice, that you take it in your account !!!

Well, I gave up and DBANned it -- and today, feeling less old and
more sanguine, downloaded and tried to install ClearLinux after all.

I got a fatal failure, saying the poor old machine has only a 32-
bit CPU. Re-checked the CL site, and 64-bit does seem to be an absolute
requirement. Rats.

Anybody have a favorite minimal 32-bit OS?

I'll start with offering it to a few friends, then to anyone on
the LUG; there might be some student group on campus that needs little
more than a calculator and maybe a minimal word processor. I doubt it's
still worth shipping overseas.

I guess the device could be this one:
https://www.linux-netbook.com/system76-starling-netbook/

2 GB !

P.S.
if I still were in the possession of my old netbook (given away cause reading
glasses needed) I would check to get ClearLinux on it.

https://docs.01.org/clearlinux/latest/reference/system-requirements.html#system-requirements

But EFI, SSE4.x ???

a check tool:
https://docs.01.org/clearlinux/latest/get-started/compatibility-check.html#check-compatibility-steps

my old netbooking given away to african children:
https://www.labdoo.org/content/07466

maybe an option for you if you want to "retire" your netbook too ?

It boots, and lets me log in, and issue a command (actually just
one tap on the up-arrow) to a tab on the terminal that I set come up on
login. Then it sits there, until I finally go away. When I get around to
looking again (usually hours later; I haven't timed it), the command is
there ready (it thinks) for me to hit enter.

I don't know how much RAM it has: still the original, whatever
that was. I haven't added any.

Core for a netbook??

2019-11-04 Thread Beartooth

I have an old System76 netbook "starling," I think one of the
first ones ever, whenever that was. Years ago. They were an Ubuntu shop
then, and afaik still are; but I'm not. The first thing I did with it was
to install the then current Fedora release.

F30 is on it now, but I can't say it runs. It boots up, and then
freezes. Local people who know things tell me it just isn't big enough
any more.

I got it to do email in waiting rooms; but I found I usually got
my turn before I got into my email. That proved true even when the
netbook was still quick; wifi in the places I waited was slow.

So I guess I can afford a risk: would CoreOS be able to handle
Alpine (formerly Pine from UW) and a browser or two? Maybe even Pan??
