Installing it on a Mac requires additional steps. I don't have a Mac,
so I can't advise on that. However, someone else here should be able to
help.

You don't have to pay for OpenOffice. It's a free download from
www.openoffice.org. I don't know who you paid for OpenOffice, but there

It's not illegal to sell copies of OpenOffice. In fact, selling it on a
CD is a useful service for those who cannot download it. However, some
load it up with crapware. Also, what is "Premium Edition"? Another
issue is those who promise support and then send their customers here.

Someone must have installed MS software, hijacking your app
preferences. You can reset this, but the exact method depends on the
version of Windows you're running. For example in Windows 10, you go
into PC Settings and select Apps > Default Apps and then click on the
file type, e.g. .doc, and then select the app to use.

Or make it read only. However, there is something called "Templates" in
OO. If you save templates there, you don't have to worry about overwriting.

As for recovering the original, it may still be on the disk, but marked
as deleted. There are disk utilities that can find deleted files that
have not actually been overwritten. Avoid writing anything to that
disk, until a recovery has been attempted.

I don't recall that. Way back then, I was at IBM Canada, supporting
OS/2, Windows 95 and NT, with some DOS stuff thrown in too. With 16 bit
Windows, which includes everything up to Windows moron edition, but not
NT, 2000 etc., DOS was actually used for very little. Most of the
functionality of Windows came from Windows. I do recall that DR-DOS was
superior to MS-DOS in many ways and that Gary Kildall proved in court
that MS-DOS contained some "borrowed" CP/M code.

Actually, the normal process is to copy everything from your home
directory to the new system. This should copy over all your data,
settings etc., for all apps. The details will vary with the operating
system you're using. Applications, such as OO, should be installed
fresh though.

Install the app, such as Thunderbird. Then, ensure it's the default app
in Windows. It should then be automatically selected when you try to
email a document.

There is no email app for OpenOffice. You use whatever email app is
installed on your computer. Many people use Thunderbird.

When you have an email app installed, you can use it to send documents.

I think you have a misunderstanding of what OpenOffice does. While it

I've run into similar. I have a friend who insists she knows how to use
a computer properly, but she's clearly clueless about much of it. I
also used to do support at IBM Canada and had a "fun" users. One woman
insisted it was OK to just kill the power to the computer when she left
for the day, but couldn't understand why her computer stopped working.
The disk was filled with all sorts of improperly saved files.

What's worse is people who should no better, but don't. I come across
this in the company I work for. We do networks, VoIP, etc. It's
unbelievable the nonsense one of the owners comes up with. A recent one
was he claimed turning off the DHCP server in a modem/router was enough
to put it into bridge mode. He also seems to think that an Ethernet
card can tell what type of cable (CAT5, 6 etc) is connected to it. He
seems to think that's what determines what speed the NIC works at,
oblivious to the fact the NICs negotiate best speed & mode. He also
seems to think some Ethernet switches don't handle VoIP properly. Well,
switches don't know anything about VoIP or even IP. They simply pass
Ethernet frames, without regard to content (the exception being VLANs,
on managed switches, with CoS set). But this guy's one of the owners...

Still though, it wouldn't hurt to include that link in the sigs, so that
when someone complains about OO, we can tell them to read the article.

There are a couple of ways. The easiest is to use a USB drive. Copy
the files from the Documents folder on the old computer to the drive and
to the Documents folder on the new computer. If you have a network, you

It has many "special" characters. With it, the € is AltGr 5. AltGr $

First off, you need an email program. Many people use Thunderbird.
Then you have to set it as the default email app. You do this by
clicking on Start button > Control Panel > Default Programs > Set your
default programs and then Thunderbird. Click on Set this program as
default. Thunderbird should now be available for sending documents.

On this point, you're wrong. A sentence always starts with a capital.
Reading text that does not have capitals is very irritating to the point
I often don't bother.

Sentence structure, grammar and correct spelling are all there to make
it easier to understand what is being said. The current situation,
where those are so often ignored, shows the sad state of behaviour or
even education these days.

It's entirely legal to sell it. Some people sell it on a CD, which is a
convenience for those without a decent internet connection. However,
some people fill it with crapware. So, your best choice is to always
download for free from www.openoffice.org.

You can use LibreOffice to save .DOCX. However, whenever possible, you
should use plain .DOC, due to incompatibilities even within Microsoft
Office.

BTW, please keep that religious nonsense off this list. Many people,

You may recall I mentioned how I used to provide OS/2 support at IBM and
worked with English and French keyboards and how it was so long ago I no
longer remember the details. Also, answers on this list should try to
be general, so that others can benefit, which is why I mentioned Linux

So, now you're hitting 3 or 4 keys and you'd have to set up something
for each special character. I just press right Alt & 5 to get €.

Again, it's so easy to set up the U.S. International layout on Linux &
Windows (no idea about Mac) that there's no need to use those tricks.

I have my keyboard configured to support U.S. English, U.S.
International and Greek (for electronics symbols). I can easily switch
among them as needed.

If he's running Windows (I thought the OP said OS/2), it's a simple

I am quite familiar with OS/2, having used it for several years and also
supported it at IBM Canada. You have to use a keyboard layout that
supports that character, for example International English. In Linux &
Windows, it's easy to switch layouts. It's been too many years for me
to remember how to do it in OS/2. When I was at IBM, I worked with both
English and French layouts.

This is not a support department. This is a mail list for users of
OpenOffice, where many users can help others. Did you buy OpenOffice
from some place that passed off this mail list as "support".

You should only download OpenOffice from www.openoffice.org, where you
can get it for free.

As for file type, you can choose the type when you save the file or set
the default file type by clicking on Tools>Options>Load/Save>General and
making your selection.

I don't see any mention of 5 years. Only that you were trying to
install 4.1.1. As someone else mentioned, there is a place to store
your info so that it's included as meta data in documents, but I didn't
get the impression that's what you were talking about.

Regardless, in all the years I've been running OO (well over a decade),
I have never, not once seen a registration screen. However, I am aware
that some people offer OO, after it has been modified in unethical
ways. I assumed this is what you had, as there was nothing to indicate
the source.

I suspect you may have downloaded OpenOffice from somewhere other than
www.openoffice.org. There are many who take open source software, such
as OpenOffice, and load it with crapware etc.. You're right to feel
uncomfortable. Someone may be trying to scam you etc..

Always download only from www.openoffice.org, which will take you to an
appropriate mirror.

BTW, I have to use Outlook at work and find it to be a piece of crap,

Perhaps he's running as a user and is being asked for the admin's password.

BTW, contrary to common practice, users should not have admin
privileges. They should be asked for the password when installing
software. Otherwise they greatly compromise security and open the door
for malware.

Whenever I set up a Windows computer, I create an admin account and
another for users. There's rarely any reason to run as admin. This is
also the normal practice in Linux.

In Windows, there's generally a "Downloads" folder, located in your
folder. Try looking there. When you find the installer, double click
on it to run the install. Incidentally, this is how you generally
install software on Windows.

One thing you can be sure of is when anyone calls you claiming to be
Apache, Microsoft, your ISP etc., it's a scam where they're trying to
install malware on your computer. I have had calls from Microsoft
about problems on my computer. Funny thing is, I run Linux. I have let

have a bit of fun that way, before they finally give up. ;-)

Microsoft Office formats, along with the Open Document Formats. I hope

I just checked with Windows 10. I normally use Windows 7, when I have
to use Windows. W10 is different in that the apps do not appear to be
automatically added as an app registered to open a file type. Instead,
it's necessary to click on Open with Choose another app and then
choose the app from Other Options and also select Always use this
app However, even after selecting that, the app will not appear in
the Open with list, though it is the default. I guess this is
Microsoft's way to discourage competitor software. I suspect W8 is the
same as W10 in this respect.

There's a couple of things you can do. Many Windows apps can run in
something called wine or the commercial version, CrossOver Office.
The other, as I do, is to run a virtual machine. For example, on this
computer, I've got both Windows 7 and 10 running in VirtualBox virtual
machines. With W7, I have access to my disks and can use cut 'n paste
between Linux and Windows. However, VirtualBox isn't quite up to speed
with W10, so I have to use a network share to access my files on Linux.
