G'day!
My machine runs W8.1 and has no trouble opening .xslx or .docx files
using AOO 4.1.1. Just checked it again. Perhaps there is something not
related to the different software that is causing the problem?

G'day Fred
Like you, I'm a fairly ordinary user. I run Win 8.1 64 bit and the latest AOO
version and always update when a new version comes out. Generally, a few bugs
are fixed and occasionally extra functionalities are added.
When you upgrade, always do it from the official
No, Kay, your documents will remain where they are and be accessible in
the usual way. I upgrade when every new version comes out and have never
lost a document. Be sure though to ONLY download from the official site
www.openoffice.org as using a third party site can cause problems.
Good luck
I'd vote for someone who doesn't respect common courtesy to be barred.
Urmas is a prime example.
For anyone who wants DejaVu fonts, they can be downloaded from

G'day Patti and Simon
I've used Chrome as my default browser for years, have downloaded AOO
every time a new version became available, without problems. But I've
always downloaded from the official site - I got burned once using an
unofficial site (not for AOO, but other software) so don't
on the odd occasions I need the other apps.

G'day!
I am using AOO 4.1.0 on a Windows 8.1 computer. I loaded your .xls
spreadsheet into Calc and the values transfer correctly. Perhaps your
problem is caused by something in the extraction process.
Good luck

If you are using Windows OS, have you tried right-clicking the file in
Explorer and checking the attributes? If read-only has been selected,
you can change that and try again. If you are using a Mac, can't help,
sorry.

If there is an official site for any software, use it. Software
downloaded from a third party site, which may be partly funded by
selling ad software, often results in you getting more than you
bargained for. I never use them, never get unwanted ad popups.

Maverick, have you tried uninstalling the version of OO that you have,
then downloading again from the official site (link below)? Hopefully
then you will be able to recover your lost work and have a stable program.
