G'day!
My machine runs W8.1 and has no trouble opening .xslx or .docx files

related to the different software that is causing the problem?

I always drag them to the trash and drop them there. Then I ask the sender

Re: Should I Upgrade?

2014-12-29 Thread Tony Gallas

G'day Fred
Like you, I'm a fairly ordinary user. I run Win 8.1 64 bit and the latest AOO
version and always update when a new version comes out. Generally, a few bugs
are fixed and occasionally extra functionalities are added.
When you upgrade, always do it from the official sitewww.openoffice.org which
takes you to the SourceForge site where all AOO files are stored. Once there
your download should start in a few seconds once you click the download button.
Downloading from a third party source almost guarantees that you will have
problems and usually wants to add other software that may or not be safe
Good luck
Tony

More complicated it is, but I'm using 8.1 which doesn't have that

Re: Sneak in Scam

2014-08-18 Thread Tony Gallas
Brian, that's a very likely explanation. I made the mistake many years
ago of clicking on the big green button. I can't remember now what I
got, but it installed something that caused me problems and it took a
while for me to realise what had happened. Once I did, I uninstalled the
offending software and have never toughed a big green button since.

When people make suggestions such as this, they are normally dismissed
with comments insisting that they simply must have downloaded
OpenOffice from some unofficial source and thus obtained a
contaminated product. (That hasn't happened this time so far, though.)
May I make an alternative suggestion?

When prospective users visit the official site and click on the
download link, they are redirected to sourceforge.net. They need to
wait a few second until the download begins, and even then they
probably need to recognise their browser's warning bar requesting
confirmation. They may not even know what to do with this at first.
Meanwhile, they are presented with a Sourceforge page which generally
advertises other possible free downloads. These advertisements usually
contain a large green Download button.

Surely it is quite likely that users will be distracted by a big green
Download button and not, initially, notice some beige banner from
their browser? They will click the big green button, understandably
thinking that this will download the product they have come for: after
all, this is still the official OpenOffice download site, isn't it?
When they install the extra software along with OpenOffice, they will
blame OpenOffice or - as here - remark that the rogue item has somehow
infected the OpenOffice download.

Note that DriverManager is indeed a program distributed by
Sourceforge: see http://sourceforge.net/projects/drivermanager/ .
There is suspiciously little information about it at the Sourceforge
site.

Should there be some explanation and warning on the OpenOffice web
site immediately before the transfer to Sourceforge (Don't touch the
button!?) to help potential users avoid this trap? Should those
responding to complaints be aware of this likely cause of the problem
and not so quick to dismiss the user as having used ill-advised
alternative download sources?

Is this what happened to the current user?

Re: Using fields for frame or draw object in writer

It is much easier to do in DRAW. You can create a text box, enter the
text then find the effects button at the bottom of the screen. One of
the options will be rotate, click that and when you put your cursor at
the corner of the box you will be able to rotate it to whatever angle
you wish. Then it is an easy matter to create another box and put it at
180 degrees. Hope this helps.

I'm guessing here, but I suspect you can do what you need using two
paragraph styles - or, probably more easily, two character styles (or
just different character formatting) - using 90-degree rotation for
one part of each label and 270-degree rotation for the other. You
could do that in frames or, possibly more easily, in table cells. It
may help to rethink your page orientation as landscape instead of
portrait or vice versa.

I trust this helps.

A little elementary arithmetic helps here: 90 degrees + 90 degrees = 180

I created a simple text page with a black background and white text, red
text, green text, then exported as a .pdf file. The colours were not
changed. OO 4.1.0, Win 8.1. Does this help?

I have the background colour for all pages set to black. When I
export to PDF it reverts everything to white, and even inverts some
of my text (white text is now black.)

Also, some of the link colours have reverted back to their defaults.

i cannot confirm this behaviour. could you please upload to some file
hosting service a sample odt file demonstrating the issue? (if you
post it on the list directly, there is a chance that it be filtered by
the antispam engine.)

Re: Open office install and ads

2014-05-22 Thread Tony Gallas

G'day Brian
If there is an official site for any software, use it. Software
downloaded from a third party site, which may be partly funded by
selling ad software, often results in you getting more than you
bargained for. I never use them, never get unwanted ad popups.

Cheers
Tony

Does your version of Open Office come with ad software attached and if so
how can I remove it?

Thanks
Brian

Maverick, have you tried uninstalling the version of OO that you have,
then downloading again from the official site (link below)? Hopefully
then you will be able to recover your lost work and have a stable program.

Cheers, Tony

A legitimate version of openOffice has no inbuilt time switches and no support
structure other than help forums. The only site from which one should download
OpenOffice is
www.openoffice.org/download
which will redirect to SourceForge servers.

As OpenOffice is a free, opensource project, it is often availed of by
unscrupulous persons to be sold commercially; that you have a purported
customer contact number and a time limited version would suggest you have
purchased such a version. If you go to the above URL you will be able to
download a free version, with no adverts, trojans, or time limitation.

Re: Open Office 4.10 text document bug

2014-05-13 Thread Tony Gallas
I tried every combination in the Change Case menu and could achieve
whatever capitalisation I wanted. It was easiest to change to all lower
case and proceed from there.

Good luck!

Dear Sirs,

Using Openoffice 4.10 text document program, I tried to change case of the
following:
Put Take Table
(EDIBLE ITEMS ONLY?)
I highlighted the entire line, and directed the program to change to capitalize
every word. The result was:
Put Take Table (EDIBLE Items Only?)
I edited the line and inserted a space before EDIBLE so it read :
Put Take Table ( EDIBLE Items Only?)
and tried again. It came out: Put Take Table ( Edible Items Only?)

Just for your review.

I also have never had a problem downloading from openoffice.org. Any

BTW, we are not a company. This is a mail list for users of
OpenOffice. Beyond using it, I have absolutely no connection with them.
