You have another solution. Use post mail. Maybe the employer is older and
prefer post mail.

Personally, consider the add-on to be a mixed-blessing; it reduces
the proliferation of odf by allowing m$ users to continue using their
software, when the true aim of increased replacement of m$o for

Most employers in the United States want resumes in either Microsoft
Word or PDF format. If you are sending an Open Document Test (.odt)
file from OpenOffice Writer this is probably the problem. OpenOffice
can save in Word's .doc format or even better It can email your resume

Whenever possible, you should take the opportunity to use the native
odt and not continue the proliferation of m$ formats.

In this simple case of a CV, the document can be sent in PDF using the
existing function of OO to create PDF files. If a editable version is
requested, the recipient will be able to see an odt file if and
odf-compliant software is used, such as the latest versions of
m$office; there is a comparison of differences between formats. See:

When dealing with organizations which I know or suspect use word, I make
it a habit of prefixing the mail with something like:

The attached doc is in open document format (odt), a world standard for
word-processing documents. If you have trouble opening it, please let me
know. Newer versions of microsoft word automatically deal with it, but
older versions can be updated to allow reading current versions of their
own (microsoft) documents as well as world standard documents.

Are you saving in .doc format? Many employers are clueless about the
.odt format that's default in OO.

We need to stop this, now. Supporting OpenOffice users is challenging
enough without also trying to resolve all outstanding questions in religion,
science, politics, and the proper status of disco music ;-)

I cannot guarantee that this list will be an offense-free zone, since there
are some pretty weird things to be offended about. But I will work to make
the list be free of off-topic disruptions that waste everyone's time. We
need to appreciate that there are over 500 subscribers to this list, and we
need to avoid sending time-killing posts that do not advance the purpose of
the list: answering questions from users related to Apache OpenOffice.

Thanks, everyone, for your understanding!

In practice, no. Once a user has subscribed the content they post is
sent out immediately, with no moderator review.

In my personal opinion (noting that we have no policy on this point)
if someone has a small tag on their posts, in the nature of Go Red
Sox! or Praise Jesus or Ernest Rutherford, the New Zealand
Einstein or Progressives To The Front! or I Like Tabby Cats, to
express their personal identity, and this tag is not disproportionate
to the length of their post, then I don't see a problem. I think it
would cause more distraction and disruption than it would save, to
communicate and enforce such a prohibition, especially on a list that
has many one-time posts from non-subscribers.

But note: there is a clear distinction between expressing pride in
one's own affiliation and attacking someone else's. I hope we agree
that the latter should not be permitted.

2014-01-08 Thread Tim Deaton
If you are sending out resumes, they need to be in .doc format or .pdf
format. You can save the document to both of those formats from within
OpenOffice.

For .pdf format, there is an icon in the standard toolbar just above
your document. Click on that to create the .pdf file.

For .doc format, choose FILE from the menu, then SAVE AS. Then browse
the FILE FORMAT dropdown to find the .doc format (MS Word 1997-2003).
