Document will not print. OPEN OFFICE WRITER will not permit access to Printer
Set-up. Followed all instructions in HELP. None of them worked.
System: Windows XP 2002 Service Pack 2
Computer networked with other computers and to printer.

I assume you currently have MS Office installed and it's the default for
MS Office file types. To make OO the default app, without
re-installing,

I wouldn't be surprised that it had everything to do with you using OOo
1.0.4. Could very well be that it can't convert documents to the Office
XP or 2003 format.
Upgrade OOo to the latest version and I'm sure you will be able.

I found the problem. I had edited /etc/hosts.deny to
stop unauthorized ssh traffic to my PC. This caused
OpenOffice Writer to crash. When I added 127.0.0.1 to
/etc/hosts.allow, everything started working again.

This is a seat of the pants answer. When I change a word that should be
auto corrected, nothing happens until I type a space or other breaking
character after it as would occur in normal typing (as opposed to
editing). Then, if necessary, I backspace to remove the extra character.
