So the workaround is to replace systemd with the one on the testing repo. But the testing release as also a bug with udev which rename network interface so that each new network interface is named renameX@interface. We test some udev workaround unsucessfully. ( https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=907365 ) Now I think a patch on systemd testing rpm should fix the issue, waiting for it Reference: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=912323 Last word that I've heard about this bug ^^^ (Bug 912323 - Adding a VLAN Device does not Work ) is that Muli can no longer reproduce it on his host. If this does reproduce on your system, would you provide more data as requested on https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=912323#c2 ? Note that I've just called the systemd cavalry to our assistance. I thought I had a simple (if inconvenient) work around but it looks like something (either the deploy or syncing the management network) puts the HWADDR line back in ifcfg-em1_1. I'm going to do some more testing... Yep, it's the network sync that adds HWADDR back which then triggers udev to rename em1_1.538 to em1_1 which doesn't work and I end up with rename??@em1_1. I can live without the sync I suppose. I'll try leaving the manual config of the management network alone and then config the other networks and see what happens. Well, that didn't work. I can't seem to find any combination that plays nicely together. Looks like Kevin's solution of ripping out udev's ability to rename interfaces may be the only quick fix. It does get us the ability to change ownership of LVs back which is more important. So far, I've seen no ill effects and everything (networking and storage) seems to be working as it should. I took the time to wait for the monthly flush. I also reduced the threshold delay and waited for the cleanup to happen. So, do I have to dig through the database looking for the precise flag to update, or is there some more clever way? I'm pretty sure this shouldn't be there anymore, as the power management of this host has already been tested and approved many times since. Hi Nicolas The Alert should be deleted from the Alert View once you had succeeded to configure test it successfully If you only configure it without testing or test failed, only the Alert saying that PM is not configured for the Host will be deleted. The message you had noted failure to verify to restart status of a host is not the exact one, can you give please the exact message? Failed to verify Host x Restart status, Please Restart Host x manually. The tests I did on power management, either via the test button, or via some actions, including power up, reboot, are all reacting well. I'm close to think there is actually NO problem, except this old log msg. I haven't find any trivial way to flush this message queue, and I was wondering whether it was stored in a database? Yes, it is stored in the database. Is there a way to clear these error messages? (Am I right with the db location?) The table holding all those messages is called audit_log, deleting from this table manually is not recommended. The table has also a auto-clean mechanism controlled by the AuditLogAgingThreashold configuration value that is set by default to 30 days. this value may be modified using the engine-config tool (requires restart of the engine to take place) Ok, so either I wait 15 more days for this msg to disapear, either I find the adequate config command line to shorten it, and restart. Ok, this is enough for me. Thank you for your explanation. And this was our vision of an active user: Name: Dan Age: 25 Job position: an integrator at a medium sized service company Technical level: computer savvy person with interest in gadgets and innovations. Has about two years of java coding experience, but coding may not be his main focus at work. Reason for using the UI Plugins feature: After getting requests from his costumers for simple log monitoring feature, the integration team leader have decided that implementing this as a Plugin for ovirt would offer a more centralised solution and has assigned dan to start getting familiar with it and give him a time estimation for completion. By creating a more accurate persona(s) of the user base we could more easily understand the needs of the users and steer the project in more productive and helpful ways for the people that really need it. It would be very interesting to see what others think this person is like and what does he need. so who do you feel is the likely user? In hopes of making ovirt better and more relevant to its users, Noam. :) [*] For those who don't know what a persona is: It's a fictional person that represents the users/costumers/people of interest of a product. by giving this person a name, age, education level and other traits its easier to relate and vision his needs Thanks Noam, I'd love to see others share their thoughts / similar work on $SUBJECT. I have exported a couple of VMs to an export domain and did a new setup of ovirt-engine. Importing is no problem as long as I import all machines first and then create new VMs. If I first create a couple of VM's and then try to import I get the error that the mac address is already in use. No problem, but I don't see an option to change the mac address of the to be imported machine so can't import it. Re: [Users] Thin Provisioning
Hi Juan, I see what the issue is and it's actually by design. The template you created has a Preallocated image. in NFS, to make a preallocated image we actually write to the disk to make it preallocated. as you can see, I created a vm with preallocated disk in NFS and if I run DU during the creation of the image you can see the size go up: 2.4G. [root@orion f1a6a2e7-38f1-4a7c-8f3b-efbca664d7aa]# du -h 2.5G. [root@orion f1a6a2e7-38f1-4a7c-8f3b-efbca664d7aa]# du -h 2.6G. [root@orion f1a6a2e7-38f1-4a7c-8f3b-efbca664d7aa]# so in NFS storage, if your template is preallocated you cannot create a thin provision copy vm (distinguishing between the actual data and previously zeroed will be complicated). you can create a snapshot of that image which will be thin provision but it will be linked to the template. or you can create a thin provision template and than create a thin provision vm or preallocated vm. Re: [Users] VM Export and import problem
Hi, This is indeed the current behavior. The issue will be solved in the near future, and the new behavior will allow importing the VM, while unplugging the specific network interface. In the mean time, you can set the AllowDuplicateMacAddresses flag to true (either using the engine-config tool, or directly in the DB in table vdc_options). Obviously, having two network interfaces with the same MAC address is highly unrecommended. Re: [Users] iSCSI multipath with EqualLogic SAN
Hi Baptiste, usually a SAN doesn't support bonding (see post of Nicolas) of its interfaces, so you have to use multipathing technology. You have to separate all nics in different subnets so multipath can work. Command multipath -ll with show the connected paths. If you merge all paths in one subnet you will have the result/behavior you just posted. So this is less oVirt related, more network specific. We have a running iSCSI config with 4 networks and oVirt runs well. Maybe the following link will help you here: https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/pdf/DM_Multipath/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux-6-DM_Multipath-en-US.pdf Cheers, Sven. -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Von: users-boun...@ovirt.org [mailto:users-boun...@ovirt.org] Im Auftrag von Nicolas Ecarnot Gesendet: Donnerstag, 21. Re: [Users] VNC web console
My 2 cents here. I think what he masses would like to ultimately see here is a pure web based SPICE/VNC client nicely integrated into the user/admin portals. In this regard the console becomes truly portable across operating systems and browsers. The biggest win here is no longer having to be stuck with Internet Exploder as the only browser on a windows client that can access a spice console. At least on a Linux based client we have Firefox, but chrome would be nice. Due to the current console situation what is completely out in the cold here is tablets (granted you can use a vnc client on a tablet, but painful due to manual connection steps ip/port/password ATM). Likewise VNC != SPICE quality and interactivity wise on top of the other obvious advantages or SPICE over VNC (EG: HW Accel via QXL). Also left out here are OSX users for which a solution like this would console enable them as well. - DHC On Thu, Feb 21, 2013 at 7:16 AM, Michal Skrivanek michal.skriva...@redhat.com wrote: On Feb 18, 2013, at 10:10 , Jaco ubuntumu...@gmail.com wrote: I've seen this in the list archives, but not sure how much traction it's gained in the intervening period (or ). Yep, it's the network sync that adds HWADDR back which then triggers udev to rename em1_1.538 to em1_1

Re: [Users] iSCSI multipath with EqualLogic SAN
Ive discussed this at length with dell's EQ support team, and on a regular system that's connected in to an equallogic san, all the iscsi ports would be on the same subnet. The kicker is, dell really wants you to use their specialized driver/iscsiinitiator to access (known as their HIT kit...host integration tools), and the HIT kit handles establishing all the multiple sessions into the EQ SAN. Unfortunately, equallogic doesnt support RHEV (and thus ovirt), and ovirt does not seem to execute the commands the HIT driver would want to intitiate multiple connections. Dell says that the use of bonding for iscsi just begs for tcp retransmits. since bonding is the only method of failover I see for now, were using anyway against their recommendations (so far zero retransmits, but were not running our systems hard yet). Re: [Users] iSCSI multipath with EqualLogic SAN
We have 2 Equallogic PS4100s. And someone more knowledgeable may prove me wrong here but, Multipathd is not my most favorite thing to configure, but you can configure your nodes to use the other paths using the command line on the Centos nodes. Yeah Dell will tell you that they want you to use their software (like the mem plugin in Vmware) but the Linux OS will see the other paths and treat it like any other SAN, you are just going to have to configure them to use them. The link sent earlier in the thread is the official guide to doing that. https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/pdf/DM_Multipath/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux-6-DM_Multipath-en-US.pdf Here is another Doc I used that is for Rhel5 but I beleive the multipath commands are the same: http://www.equallogic.com/WorkArea/downloadasset.aspx?id=8727 On Thu, Feb 21, 2013 at 1:09 PM, Jonathan Horne jho...@skopos.us wrote: Ive discussed this at length with dell's EQ support team, and on a regular system that's connected in to an equallogic san, all the iscsi ports would be on the same subnet. Re: [Users] VNC web console
http://cloudiad.com/analysis/doc1 it looks noVNC would be easier to integrate with. Thanks for the link - did not know that. I think noVNC has a bit more traction in the industry (with good reason), since is does seem to be a fairly simple straight-forward client, whereas Guagamole is actually a more generic/general VNC ( RDP) proxy. In theory Guacamole may be extendible to the SPICE protocol, enabling a single interface for accessing instance consoles. - J ___ Users mailing list Users@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/users
Re: [Users] VM Export and import problem
Muli Salem wrote: Hi, This is indeed the current behavior. The issue will be solved in the near future, and the new behavior will allow importing the VM, while unplugging the specific network interface. What would be real nice is a selection dialog window for mac addresses from a pool(manager) I have an 'old' xen virtualisation solution running which has quite a few features that I would like to see in oVirt, mac address pool manager is one of them. In the mean time, you can set the AllowDuplicateMacAddresses flag to true (either using the engine-config tool, or directly in the DB in table vdc_options). Obviously, having two network interfaces with the same MAC address is highly unrecommended. Understood, use clone to circumvent this problem, only need to remove /etc/udev/rules.d/xx-net.rules and then the network will come up. Thanks Noam! Interesting that this came the same week as the Nagios plug-in was announced on the list ;-) My follow-on questions: what does Dan need from the oVirt project? Tutorials and documentation on writing a plug-in, I imagine, perhaps a plug-in template or example he can read, understand and modify to fit his needs. Does he need/want a way to distribute, promote, update, and manage his plug-in through oVirt.org? Perhaps he'd like users to be able to tell him whether they like it, ask him questions? By creating a more accurate persona(s) of the user base we could more easily understand the needs of the users and steer the project in more productive and helpful ways for the people that really need it. It would be very interesting to see what others think this person is like and what does he need. so who do you feel is the likely user? I think that we definitely have a number of types of UI plug-in developer - perhaps another one might be a start-up who wants to promote their product by integrating into oVirt? Or perhaps someone like NetApp or HP, a partner working ot integrate their hardware solutions? It would be really interesting if someone had thought about and put together user profiles or personas for people like that ;-) (for those watching at home, I split our group into smaller groups, and indeed there were two groups who came up with profiles like those above). Hi Charlie, On 02/21/2013 07:13 PM, Charlie wrote: Wow. That's an incredibly tight focus! Working towards a maximally useful product wastes resources, and the aliens will never buy Earth goods anyway. Thanks for the feedback - as the guy who gave the presentation, perhaps I can explain. Projects have users, and those users have things they need/want to do. If you can think of the people and the problems they have, you can figure out what their needs are, and whether you meet them. Let me give you an example. Let's say I am bringing a new lollipop to the market. I *could* say to myself anyone could buy this - some people do not like sweet things, so it should not be too sweet, but other people like spicy things, so it should be a bit spicy, etc. I could, instead, say who has the problem which is solved by a lollipop? I might decide one of the problems is I want a lollipop stick, and then I'm thinking of people who might want lollipop sticks, and why, and whether I want to meet their needs. I would probably decide children like sweet things. I need to consider the needs of a child who wants a lollipop. Children are small, so the lollipops should not be high up. They like sweet things. Based on interviews with kids, I ascertain that the favourite flavours of 7 and 8 year old kids are banana, chili and strawberry. So I decide to make lollipops basedon these three flavours. When I try to figure out how the kids will get the lollys, I realise that they don't buy lollipops, their parents do. So I make sure the lollipops are at eye level for an 8yo (not high on a shelf), in a place where the parents have no choice but to stand and wait (beside the cash register) and are priced at a level that a parent will add one to the shopping just to shut the kid up. Lollipops do not have one target audience. Perhaps I'm also targeting college kids studying for exams who want a coffee flavoured lolly. I make sure that university campuses get lots of these at the right time of the year, and that they are also available in the 24h service stations near the universities. By making a range of personas, I cover the entirity of my target audience. oVirt has lots of target user types: * Sysadmins who will install and maintain virt infrastructure for medium sized companies * Sysadmins who will install and maintain virt infrastructure for large companies * Consultants in a service company who want to install and support virt for their clients (perhaps as a remote admin tool?) * University CIO who wants to have a nice VDI solution for his students * Developers/testers/??? working in a medium size enterprise, who want to spin up and down VMs at will, create them from templates and images, live snapshot to save state, etc * ISP clients, who have access to the VMs their ISP created for them, and who just need to be able to shut down and restart, and also monitor resource usage. * Developers who want to integrate their stuff into market virt solutions, to grow the market for their stuff * Developers of core code Some of these, we can take care of my addressing another group. For example, maybe the medium sized company's needs are taken care of by the same features as the big company, and maybe not. But we can identify 3 or 4 personas for oVirt which cover most of them - and the UI plug-in author is one of them. Thanks for your feedback! Re: [Users] iSCSI multipath with EqualLogic SAN
Never heard of HIT before. Seems to be a proprietary Dell solution? Ok, I just high-lighted the classical /most common SAN connection :) We are using a Dell MD3220i (much smaller then EQ series) with MD1200 units, and yes the network configuration for subnet separated multipathing seems to be more complicated at first, but it will give you load-balancing and auto fail-over functionality. Of course a nice and quick alternative as suggested here ...but you can configure your nodes to use the other paths using the command line on the Centos nodes..., is also possible. Cheers, Sven. Yeah Dell will tell you that they want you to use their software (like the mem plugin in Vmware) but the Linux OS will see the other paths and treat it like any other SAN, you are just going to have to configure them to use them. The link sent earlier in the thread is the official guide to doing that. https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/pdf/DM_Multipath/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux-6-DM_Multipath-en-US.pdf Here is another Doc I used that is for Rhel5 but I beleive the multipath commands are the same: http://www.equallogic.com/WorkArea/downloadasset.aspx?id=8727 On Thu, Feb 21, 2013 at 1:09 PM, Jonathan Horne jho...@skopos.usmailto:jho...@skopos.us wrote: Ive discussed this at length with dell's EQ support team, and on a regular system that's connected in to an equallogic san, all the iscsi ports would be on the same subnet.
