Win2012 and Win8 have SPICE disabled in osinfo. Only VNC is allowed since there
is/were no qxl drivers.

[ovirt-users] getting 404 after fresh install of oVirt 3.4 on CentOS 6.5 (+ solution)

2014-05-13 Thread Steven Van Acker
Hello all,

I was asked to post the following problem on this mailinglist.

After installing a clean CentOS 6.5 with a clean oVirt 3.4, following the
instructions from
http://www.ovirt.org/Download#Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux_6.2FCentOS_Installation_Instructions
I went to http://localhost.localdomain:80/ovirt-engine as indicated and was
redirected to a 404 page. The same happened when using https.

During the installation, engine-setup will print out the following on my VM
with 512MB RAM:

[WARNING] Warning: Not enough memory is available on the host. Minimum
requirement is 4096MB, and 16384MB is recommended.
  SSH fingerprint: 4B:DE:48:26:99:AA:C0:72:E3:C8:B5:64:5F:6E:6D:00
  Internal CA
FB:82:FE:14:35:3A:BE:1A:B1:E6:99:C2:DC:CD:6D:E0:44:64:0F:47
  Web access is enabled at:
  http://localhost.localdomain:80/ovirt-engine
  https://localhost.localdomain:443/ovirt-engine
Please use the user "admin" and password specified in order to
login into oVirt Engine

The consequence of not having enough RAM for oVirt is that it will silently
fail to start up, without apparent errors or warnings.
In my view, the warning above should be rephrased as "Not enough memory is
available on the host, oVirt will refuse to start" and colored red.

The solution to this problem is to have at least 4GB of RAM, after which
oVirt seems to start up fine (with only 1.2GB of RAM in use).

If the configuration is manual, you need to set the group to 'virt' as shown

I have two NICs - a wireless NIC which is disabled, and an ethernet NIC
"p3p1" which is statically configured via network-scripts.

I've also attached the output of "ip addr".

I also notice some disturbing looking messages in the vdsm log during
setupMultipath, including "Panic: Error initializing IRS" and then
subsequent lvm-related errors during StorageRefresh. Those did not abort
the deployment, however. What do those failures indicate?

if it's a python-ethtool issue, try with
yum downgrade python-ethtool
if it works, add it to exclusion (in /etc/yum.conf add exclude=python-ethtool)
until the issue is fixed.

Dan, can we have a respin of VDSM once the issue is handled (if it has to be
solved vdsm side)?

If we haven't already a BZ, please open one and make it blocking 3.4.2 release,

You mean, in the log?

Did it 'refuse' to start, or simply failed to start?

With what conditions exactly you want this error? What if the engine does
manage to start (e.g. because you did some weird tweaking and managed to
make it run in 256MB)? What if it later fails, after you add a few tens of
hosts/VMs?

I know I regularly use a 1GB VM for testing setup, never had problems.

Generally, red stuff in setup is reserved to real errors - when something
failed.

So the engine uses 2.2GB of virtual memory, but only 530MB rss, and total
system use is, without caches, 670MB. So it's likely that a 512MB VM will
not be enough.

Thanks for the report!

Antonio may correct me here, but I believe it's caused by vdsm using
libnl-1.x and py-ethtool using libnl3. We've discovered an issue with
this combination, where libnl-1.x is able to invalidate the netlink
socket libnl3 gives py-ethtool; rendering py-ethtool useless.

This issue is somewhat tracked in this bz:

This is actually quite a delicate issue, as I believe there are some
fixes in vdsm, py-ethtool have some patches to improve the error
handling (which should help vdsm too) and we're waiting for an official
libnl3 update to tackle the socket handling better.

I have hopes that once the libnl3 fixes gets out, much of this will be
solved.

Those did not
 abort
the deployment, however. What do those failures indicate?

Hi Doron,

thanks for pointing out [1]. I was not aware of this, basically these
are the steps I wrote ;)

Thanks for pointing out the availability of the maintenance mode in the
GUI; I noticed local maint. being transparent (from GUI -> command line,
though not the other way around).

Also, I need the global maintenance for step one because of the engine
upgrade because I suspect ha-agent would interfere because of necessary
service restarts/downtime.

It could have been reactivated much earlier though!

Cheers,
Daniel

Doesn't this make you wonder where the minimum requirements come from?

If it runs with less than 1 GB RAM, why do the docs say you need 4 GB
and recommend even 16 GB ?

Is it just a matter of scale(number of vms/hosts/DCs) ?
What would make engine consume more RAM?

Can you maybe lower the minimum requirements?

I know RedHat does some heavy load/scale tests
so maybe someone can share some information
about ram/other resource usage in heavy load
scenarios?

It is unavoidable that any management level in a software stack adds
abstractions and requirements.

If you are planning to run only a couple of VMs on a single laptop,
going to basics and using qemu/libvirt directly, or gnome-boxes, would
make sense.

If you plan to manage a multitude of hosts, then the benefits of oVirt
comes to play.

To your specific point, I am aware of two restrictions. One, of Linux
not supporting bridging wifi. The other is oVirt's reliance on bridges
for VM connectivity. The second restriction is avoidable, but requires
some tinkering. If you decide to try it out, I'd love if you report your
success or challenges on this list.

Hi Qiang,

you should be able to rebuild debian spice-xpi package:
https://packages.debian.org/source/spice-xpi
That should give you working spice-xpi with least effort.

In the long run, it would be a huge achievement to utilize ovirt
even for little vm workloads, especially if you want to compete
with vmware.

I know "one size never fits all" but I guess ovirt could very well
be improved for single host management as well.

Re: [ovirt-users] stateless is false, but state changes do not persist after a poweroff.

2014-05-13 Thread Zhong Qiang
I've known that Virtual machines in a pool are stateless, meaning that data
is not persistent across reboots. Virtual machines in a pool are started
when taken by a user, and shut down when the user is finished.

In vdsm's ovirt-3.4 branch we have detection of ethtool's version and use the
same libnl version, as seen in:
http://gerrit.ovirt.org/gitweb?p=vdsm.git;a=blob_plain;f=lib/vdsm/netlink.py;hb=7e306159d5f10f67197d499daa282d3d4c1bef73

if _ethtool_uses_libnl3():

This looks to me like there might be a python-ethtool 0.9.2 bug for devices
that do not get ipv6 autoconf addresses. I'll investigate.

I double checked this and I was very much surprised by this finding!

[ovirt-users] oVirt Mirrors

2014-05-13 Thread Andrew Lau
Hi,

I was wondering if there were any plans on drumming up an oVirt mirror
down in Australia. It takes me nearly a few hours just to grab all the
required packages to spin up a new box.

Alternatively, the mirror does not seem to support rsync. Is there a
recommended way to sync? (w/o ISOs)

Thanks,
Andrew

Re: [ovirt-users] oVirt Mirrors

2014-05-13 Thread Ewoud Kohl van Wijngaarden
Would it be an idea to keep a mirrorlist file? AFAIK it's as simple as
dropping a static file at a well known place with one URL per line. Yum
can do the heavy lifting of determining the fastest mirror.

Additionally I'd really like some clear instructions of how to set up a
mirror and get it published as public mirror.

We should ensure we have GPG-signed packages though. IIRC someone was
working on this. Anyone has more information about this?

Yes, 3.4.1 packages have been signed.
GPG public key is delivered within ovirt-release34 rpm.
About the mirrorlist, I think Ewoud is right, it should be only a matter of
dropping a static text file with the list
and change yum repo config for pointing to the mirror list.
We'll handle it for next release. Ewoud, do you mind open a BZ on this and make
it blocker for 3.4.2?

Hello,
today it seems I was given right to join the Italian translators' team on
Zanata (I see myself as one of the team members).
What is the next step?
I'm following
https://github.com/zanata/zanata-server/wiki/Opening-a-Translation-Project
but I don't see a link to translate oVirt in Italian
Is it responsibility of one of oVirt project maintainers to allow me to
create an "it" branch?

I opened https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1097307 for this. I

you need to request that from one of the maintainers of the

[ovirt-users] update vm in a pool

2014-05-13 Thread nicola gentile
Good morning,
I am new user, and I would ask you an information.
I have installed ovirt 3.4.
I created a pool with 3 vm, too.

I should add software to 3 vm how I must proceed?
1) I must delete the vm from pool, and than add the software and then
recreate the pool?
2) or there are other solution?

Thank you a lot.

[ovirt-users] My presentation and first question - RAM limit 64000MB

2014-05-13 Thread Fagner Patricio
Hello Everybody

My name is Fagner Patrício and i am new in the list, I am from Brazil and I
am a network admin of a public institution of my state.

I have a first question, a few months ago i installed a oVirt enviroment
and so far so good, but last week we received a big data application with
big RAM needs, about 96GB. So i created a virtual machine with this RAM
configuration, but when a start, it report a error, that my limit o RAM per
machine is between 1024MB and 64000MB.

How can i change this limits?

My oVirt is version 3.3 of compatibility.

ok, started with messages part...
is it correct that I can translate only oVirt master branch (and rhevm
ones)? Will it be automatically applied to 3.4 too?
If I have a 3.4.1 environment can I then easily apply my translation over
so that I can check with real application?

Re: [ovirt-users] Failure during self-hosted deployment: exception configuring management bridge

2014-05-13 Thread Bob Doolittle
I think I did in fact start with the wrong ovirt-release RPM, and
consequently the wrong repos.

I have started over as specified in the 3.4.1 release notes (fresh
Fedora 19 install, yum localinstall
http://resources.ovirt.org/pub/yum-repo/ovirt-release34.rpm).

Now I am encountering a different issue during the same step, but I'll
start a new e-mail thread for clarity.

Thanks,

[ovirt-users] New problem with hosted-engine during "Configuring the management bridge"

2014-05-13 Thread Bob Doolittle

Hi,

I have started a new installation as specified in the 3.4.1 release
notes (fresh Fedora 19 install, yum localinstall
http://resources.ovirt.org/pub/yum-repo/ovirt-release34.rpm).

This is failing in the step "Configuring the management bridge".

Based on the vdsm.log, it appears I am hitting:
*Bug 988995* -vdsm
multipath.py restarts mutipathd, cutting the branch vdsm sits on

"multipath -F" is returning "invalid keyword: getuid_callout" and it
appears that this is causing vdsm-tool to abort (although the command
exit status is 0 and the bug report says that those are only harmless
warnings).

There is no workaround stated in that bug report.

Help?

certainly a fair question ... There is also a statement in

Or isolate the recommendations to a flat file which is
commented, and sourced by the script, so a person can discern
the difference between 'hard' requirements, and simple

yum install epel-release

yum -y update

yum -y install ovirt-engine

When asked "Configure VDSM on this host?", I answered yes

vdsm-python-4.14.6-0.fc19.x86_64

Now I can access to the Administration Portal, but cannot start the local Hots,
allways get this message:

Host's Compatibility Version doesn't match the Cluster's Compatibility Version.

Host local_host is installed with VDSM version (Non interactive user) and
cannot join cluster local_cluster which is compatible with VDSM versions [4.13,

What can I do to fix it?

every version in Zanata tracks the translation for a different ovirt-engine
code-branch:
the 'master' version in Zanata is tracking the translation for the 'master'
branch in ovirt-engine's code repo. therefore the 'master' version should
*always* be kept up-to-date with regards to translations.
the 'ovirt-3.4' version in Zanata is tracking the translation for the 'ovirt-
engine-3.4' branch.
AFAIK, the ovirt-engine-3.4.1 code was already branched out of
ovirt-engine-3.4,
therefore we will need to create an 'ovirt-3.4.1' version in Zanata if we would
like to track translations specifically for ovirt 3.4.1 (the 'ovirt-engine-3.4'
code branch is now the baseline for ovirt-engine-3.4.2, AFAIK).

we are typically not updating translations for versions that were already
GA'd (3.4), therefore I recommend to concentrate at this point only on the
'master' version (which is currently tracking the ovirt-engine-3.5
translations,
practically).

once we will branch the ovirt-engine-3.5 code out of the 'master' code branch,
I will create an 'ovirt-3.5' version in Zanata, to track the ovirt-engine-3.5
translations. the 'master' version will remain the translation tracker for the
'master' code branch [which would practically become the baseline for the next
ovirt-engine planned release (ovirt-3.6?)].
from that point on, translations which we want to land in ovirt-3.5 will need
to be updated in both the 'master' version and the 'ovirt-3.5' version in
Zanata
(very similar to code patches: once we branch out, if we want a certain piece
of code to land in ovirt-3.5, we will need to fix it in 'master' as well as in
the 'ovirt-engine-3.5' branch).

> If I have a 3.4.1 environment can I then easily apply my translation over so
> that I can check with real application?

again, doing translations specifically for 3.4.1 is problematic, as I explained
above; I recommend working on a 'master'-based environment.
in order to apply your translations, a regular ovirt environment is not enough
-
you will need a development environment, since the GUI code needs to be
re-compiled with the new locale to make that new locale available in the GUI.

you can leave it untranslated or copy-paste the English string into the Italian
translation - the result should be the same (English string displayed in GUI).

It is recommended to copy the translation rather than leaving it untranslated,
since leaving it untranslated will affect the statistics of the translation
completeness (i.e. even if the translation is actually 100% complete, it will
not be shown as 100% if strings were left untranslated, even deliberately).

if you will leave the translation blank but mark it as 'translated' (so
statistics are not affected), there is a good chance that the GUI will simply
display a blank text as the translation, rather than the English text, so
need to be careful with that.

> In case of no translation for a sentence what would be behaviour during use

missing translations will result in displaying the corresponding English
string instead.

I've seen a similar problem (404 on webadmin) on my 4GB physical ovirt

Relevant bz https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?format=multiple&id=1078291

so it might have been that it wasn't a memory limit in the OP that
caused failure, but the time it took jboss to deploy

I have a first question, a few months ago i installed a oVirt enviroment
and so far so good, but last week we received a big data application
with big RAM needs, about 96GB. So i created a virtual machine with this
RAM configuration, but when a start, it report a error, that my limit o
RAM per machine is between 1024MB and 64000MB.

How can i change this limits?

My oVirt is version 3.3 of compatibility.

do you want to use the VMs as stateless or statefull?
did you use the pool to assign a single vm per user from user portal, or
just to create a bunch of similar VMs?

3.4 has "template versions", so you can create a new version of the
template, and next time you shutdown/start the VMs, they will rebase to
latest version of the template if pool is so defined.

you can also install the application on the VM after you start it as an
admin (which doesn't create the stateless snapshot by default like when
a user starts the pool'd vm from the user portal).

If the configuration is manual, you need to

#gluster volume set VOLNAME group virt

This will enable below options on gluster volume :

  quick-read=off

  remote-dio=on

Can you please make sure group has set properly ?

check whether it helps ..

tnx a lot!! now it's much better - from VM i can
get dd with ~ 60 MB/s
this is still ~ x2 lower than from host, but x3
better than it was before :)

BTW could not found "GUI got ""Optimize for virt.
store" option" in oVirt 3.5

The option "Optimize for Virt store" is available when you select a
volume in Ovirt - both as a right click menu option as well as a button
in the top sub navigation bar.

You also can check this option while creating a gluster volume using the
oVirt GUI

Re: [ovirt-users] jboss deployments timeout (was: getting 404 after fresh install of oVirt 3.4 on CentOS 6.5 (+ solution))

2014-05-13 Thread Yedidyah Bar David
I am the reporter of the below bz, and the author of the fix [1]. However, I
don't know jboss at all - just searched around, found somewhere the option
'deployment-timeout' (not sure where, probably a quick search can find this)
and verified that the fix works. It seems like neither any of the reviewers
of the change know enough about jboss to do some more analysis. Can anyone
else, that knows jboss, please look at this issue? Specifically:
1. Was anything related to the maximum time for deployments changed in relevant
jboss versions?
2. What is affected? What isn't?
- fedora 19/20(/21?), el6
- ovirt repos (3.3, 3.4, master) and minimum requirements

John: If this is reproducible for you, you might want to try the fix [1]
(linked to from the bug). If you do, please report - what exact versions
(OS, jboss, ovirt, etc) you used, and (according to the logs) how long did
the deployment take. Thanks!

For what it's worth: my system is not a roaming laptop. it's a fairly
big desktop system that has a wireless interface. so in my case i
think we might still be talking about 'single host management'. The
reason i have wireless adapters in my desktops as well is because i
couldnt easily wire the entire house. Perhaps these days, this is not
such an uncommon configuration as you might think, and wireless is no
longer only common in portable or laptop systems but in desktops as
well.

Anyway, I just wanted to try out this enterprise grade/level
virtualization stack on a single node, just to see how it works and
where the good/bad points are. Other people might want to try this for
similar purposes, kick the tires a bit before a full blown formal
multi host pilot is attempted. The 'All-In-One' installation/setup is
meant to address that; i was hoping it would be a good fit for me as
well.

John Smith.
