Re: [Users] Hypervisor info

2014-01-13 Thread Sven Kieske
Yeah,

I know that script, but it's a difference if you can tell the
virtualization software or if you get information regarding
the infrastructure beneath it.

But I agree that the UUID is not that much information.
We should just pay attention to not leak more information
than necessary.

This leads me to the question: Why does the UUID got exposed
to the vm in the first place?

[Users] Using oVirt in mini datacenter

2014-01-13 Thread Novel Kumar
Hi Guyz,

I have a requirement to compare vCenter features with oVirt in data center
usage. I have a done a deep comparison of features and oVirt seems to be a
good opensource alternative for Vmware.

Can some one provide a lab requirement for setting up a mini oVirt setup.
Does it require a dedicated DHCP and DNS server?

My Requirement:

To setup a mini datacenter using oVirt for demo purpose and feature
comoparison with Vmware. I need HA , load balancing an fault tolerance. I
also need to setup authetication with our current corp email address which
is based on AD.

This is what i was able to figure out.

1. At least three physical servers .
2. One shared storage among the 3 servers [for live migration]
3. A DHCP server running on Linux [OR can i use my existing DHCP server
which is running in Windows]
4. A DNS server [Or can i use an existing DNS server]

What else is required.. Please help...

Regards,
Novel

/tmp is a red herring here. virt-v2v creates a temporary mount point for
the export storage domain in /tmp, and then writes to it directly.
Specifically, in this case /tmp/dgsXFuqz0X is a temporary mount point.
virt-v2v doesn't require any significant temporary storage in this case

I still think that the problem is likely to be nfs permissions. Could
you please try the following, as root, on the virt-v2v box:

Prep: If none already exists, create user with uid:gid = 36:36.

# mkdir /tmp/ovirt-mount
# mount ovirt-server:/path/to/export /tmp/ovirt-mount
# su - 36 user
$ cd /tmp/ovirt-mount/8eff2927-3bff-4b15-bdd0-8c4e0f40652d
$ ls
$ touch foo
$ rm foo

Tidy up by deleting your temporary user and group if you created one.

Do you hit any errors doing the above?

 Hi,

is this feature page up to date?

 http://www.ovirt.org/Features/Online_Virtual_Drive_Resize

 specifically the point:

 QEMU-GA

support for notifying the guest and updating the size of the visible
 disk: To be integrated

That actually meant triggering the partition/lvm/filesystem resize
automatically (in the guest), so that you don't have to do it manually.

because we used online drive resize and it does show up in ubuntu
 based vm, without qemu-ga installed?

There are errors for one volume reoccuring all the time, but that doesn't look

want to be sure that if I have to power off a host for mainteinance,
when I booted it up again, all work flawlessly.

In my testing I powered off a cluster host member, but when I booted
up the host again, the network configuration was reverted to an old
configuration that I had configured previously to the registration
with Ovirt-engine. (Before registration I had changed this config to
the correct settings, but I never had rebooted the host).

In other cases whith other nodes, when I rebooted the node there was
not networking config at all. I reconfigured the network interfaces
and rebooted again and again, and nothing. The network settings
dissapears from the status tab (TUI) when the host boot up.

There is possible to add a reset to defaults option to Ovirt node?

Thanks in advance.

I have no experience with oVirt VoIP but here is some general feeback.
This has been asked several times on the Asterisk mailing list so you
might want to search those archives. If you want to use an E1 or T1 then
last time I looked it's a no go because (at the time) passing on PCI(e)
cards to a VM was not working very well. If you use all SIP than your
mileage may vary. It all depends on how much load the box has from the
other VMs. The less load on the entire box the better and the less VMs
run on the box the better and the less the VoIP software does to the
actual calls in transit the better. And if there's no clock skew the
calls might even sound ok. Best thing you can do is setup a proof of
concept and load it with hundreds or thousands of calls. Then add a few
other VMs and let them do stuff that causes disk reads/writes and
network send/receives (aka a lot of interrupts). Then see what happens
to your calls. In general, the more calls the bigger the chance that
(clusters of) bare metal boxes are used.

[Users] Horrid performance during disk I/O

2014-01-13 Thread Blaster

This probably more appropriate for the qemu users mailing list, but that list
doesn’t get much traffic and most posts go unanswered…

As I’ve mentioned in the past, I’m migrating my environment from ESXi to oVirt
AIO.

Under ESXi I was pretty happy with the disk performance, and noticed very
little difference from bare metal to HV.

Under oVirt/QEMU/KVM, not so much….

Running hdparm on the disk from the HV and from the guest yields the same
number, about 180MB/sec (SATA III disks, 7200RPM). The problem is, during disk
activity, and it doesn’t matter if it’s Windows 7 guests or Fedora 20 (both
using virtio-scsi) the qemu-system-x86 process starts consuming 100% of the
hypervisor CPU. Hypervisor is a Core i7 950 with 24GB of RAM. There’s 2
Fedora 20 guests and 2 Windows 7 guests. Each configured with 4 GB of
guaranteed RAM.

Load averages can go up over 40 during sustained disk IO. Performance
obviously suffers greatly.

I have tried all combinations of having the guests on EXT 4, BTRFS and using
EXT 4 and BTRFS inside the guests, as well as direct LUN. Doesn’t make any
difference. Disk IO sends qemu-system-x86 to high CPU percentages.

This can’t be normal, so I’m wondering what I’ve done wrong. Is there some
magic setting I’m missing?

Yes, the other option is to buy certificates from already trusted 3rd parties,

No.

You can replace the Websocket Proxy certs referenced by
/etc/ovirt-engine/ovirt-websocket-proxy.conf.d/10-setup.conf

The websocket proxy needs a combined certificate file with your cert and
the entire chain for SSL_CERTIFICATE

Google Chrome.

Excellent, that's what I was looking for. I already tried going to
http://FQDN/ca.crt, downloaded it, and installed it but still received
the same error. I'm going to replace them for 3rd party ones.

It should not happen.

Which browser do you use? how did you mark the CA certificate within the
browser?

Thank you for the help!

[Users] Venue for oVirt meet-up, Saturday Feb 1st

2014-01-13 Thread Dave Neary
Hi all,

I have a venue for our meet-up in Brussels!

We will meet from 19h30 in Au Bon Vieux Temps, a very nice Belgian bar at:

Impasse Saint-Nicolas 4,
1000 Brussels,
Belgium

We will be there from about 19h30. Bear in mind, this is a bar, not a
restaurant - but there are lots of places nearby where you can partake
in pomme-frites and sausages, or step out for a quick meal and come back.

See you all there!

Cheers,
Dave.

[Users] Help: Problem uploading the ISO file on engine

2014-01-13 Thread David Li
Hi,

I copied a Centos netinstall ISO file to a directory on my engine machine to
get ready for installation. Then I used

engine-iso-uploader upload -i ISO_DOMAIN CentOS-6.4-x86_64-netinstall.iso

to upload or put it into the proper ISO domain directory. However this command
now totally stuck. Even kill -9 won't be able to do anything. Moreover now my
ISO domain in the DC seems dead or becomes inactive too.

What happened? Is there any way to recover from this point without rebooting
everything?

2014-01-13 Thread Blaster

Sorry I missed your original post. But at least I know now I’m not the only
one suffering this problem. I would be interested in knowing how wide spread
this is, and why there aren’t people screaming up and down on the qemu mailing
list about this issue? My system board is a Sabertooth X58 using the ICH10r
chipset.

I wish I hadn’t of destroyed my AMD oVirt system yesterday, I didn’t notice any
issues on there, but I didn’t push the IO very hard on it.

Have you opened a BZ on this issue?

I wonder if it’s possible to down rev qemu to see if this is a recent issue, or
will oVirt have an issue?

Are you trying to directly access noVNC throught that URL?
I use the webui and click on the console icon/button and then FF opens a
new tab with the console in it. Looking at the address bar it shows some
magic url but nothing that I can see that you can use directly.

I use oVirt-Engine web interface to connect to the console. I was saying
I go to that link to accept the certificate, which then allows me to
connect to the noVNC page. Supposedly, importing that cert prevents you
from having to do that continuously. However, that is not working
correctly for me, in Chrome.

Re: [Users] Horrid performance during disk I/O

2014-01-13 Thread Sven Kieske
Hi,

I suspect most users didn't complain because
they do not have high IO workloads (yet).

I think most people run test setups (as do I).

However,
in my own (artificial) IO workload test
on engine 3.2.3. there was no extreme cpu penalty
for higher IO, the read/write(cache/no cache)
was an expected linear transformation, with no
high cpu at all.

I didn't test it with 3.3. though, and
as I said it was an artificial workload, no
real applications.

I've disabled the service again, and the migration has completed successfully.

Thank you all for your assistance, and I'm sorry for wasting your time.

Regards.

Neil Wilson.

 Good morning everyone,

 Sorry for the late reply.

Tom: unfortunately selinux is disabled on all the machines involved.

Michal: Attached are the latest logs, I started the migration at
8:43am and it returned an error/failed at 8:52am. The details of the
 migration are as follows.

 node01 (10.0.2.21) is the destination
 node03 (10.0.2.23) is the source
 engine01 (10.0.2.31) is the engine
 Tux is the VM

Strangely enough the immediate pop up error I received in the GUI
previously didn't appear this time and it looked like it might
actually work, however after waiting quite a while it eventually
returned an error in the Tasks as follows...

 2014-Jan-14, 09:05 Refresh image list failed for domain(s): bla-iso
(ISO file type). Please check domain activity.
2014-Jan-14, 09:05 Migration failed due to Error: Internal Engine
Error. Trying to migrate to another Host (VM: tux, Source:
 node03.blabla.com, Destination: node01.blabla.com).
2014-Jan-14, 08:52 Migration failed due to Error: Internal Engine
Error (VM: tux, Source: node03.blabla.com, Destination:
 node01.blabla.com).

and then also received an error in the engine.log which is why I've
 attached that as well.

Please shout if you need any further info.

 Thank you so much.

 Regards.

Sorry to trouble you again, anyone have any ideas on what to try next?

 Hi Neil,
hm, other than noise I don't really see any failures in migration.
Can you attach both src and dst vdsm log with a hint which VM and at what
time approx it failed for you?
There are errors for one volume reoccuring all the time, but that doesn't
 look related to the migration

 Thanks,

  Hi Dafna,

Apologies for the late reply, I was out of my office yesterday.

Just to get back to you on your questions.

can you look at the vm dialogue and see what boot devices the vm has?
Sorry I'm not sure where you want me to get this info from? Inside the
ovirt GUI or on the VM itself.
The VM has one 2TB LUN assigned. Then inside the VM this is the fstab
  parameters..

  [root@tux ~]# cat /etc/fstab
  /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3defaults
  1 0
  /dev/vda1 /boot ext3defaults1
  0
  tmpfs /dev/shmtmpfs defaults
  0 0
  devpts /dev/ptsdevpts gid=5,mode=620
  0 0
  sysfs /syssysfs defaults
  0 0
  proc/proc procdefaults
  0 0
  /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01 swapswapdefaults
  0 0
  /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol02 /homes xfs
  defaults,usrquota,grpquota1 0

can you write to the vm?
Yes the machine is fully functioning, it's their main PDC and hosts
  all of their files.

can you please dump the vm xml from libvirt? (it's one of the commands
  that you have in virsh)

Re: [Users] Migration Failed

2014-01-13 Thread Sven Kieske
Hi,

you may want to consider to enable your firewall
for security reasons.

The ports which nfs uses are configured under:

/etc/sysconfig/nfs

for EL 6.

There's no reason at all to run oVirt without
correct firewalling, not even in test environments
as you will want firewalling in production and
you have to test it anyway.

Re: [Users] Help: Problem uploading the ISO file on engine

2014-01-13 Thread Markus Stockhausen
I copied a Centos netinstall ISO file to a directory on my engine machine to
get ready for installation. Then I used

 engine-iso-uploader upload -i ISO_DOMAIN CentOS-6.4-x86_64-netinstall.iso

If you have access to the ISO domain you can simply copy files
into it. Ensure to set the right permissions. Afterwards these
files should be visible in the CD dialogue in the admin interface.
