[ovirt-users] Re: What is the status of the whole Ovirt Project?

2023-10-12 Thread Alex Crow via Users

Thanks Neal, your insight is very much appreciated.

A lot of people forget about SuSE, but it's got the same ethos that RH
had a few years ago, and it's worth looking into.

I can imagine Fedora being a choice in CI/CD deployments but I'd be
surprised is more old-fashioned companies would accept the risk. Going
through a whole risk vs cost thing right now.

It does seem that OpenShift is a potent platform, and pulling out of OKD
would be a horrible mess, so here's hoping that if oVirt dies that OKD
is a viable platform for both containers and Virtualisation (ah, legacy
workloads!). It's just a shame that oVirt no longer has the sponsorship,
I've been relentlessly ragged on on Reddit for admitting to using it
(mostly from Hyper-V fanbois), but it's far, far better than Hyper-V and
much less restrictive than VMWare. Hyper-V had me pulling my remaining
hair out almost every single day. Five clicks to get the MAC address of
a VM? Dynamic MAC addresses not being cluster-wide and pinned to a VM,
so they change after a migration? Yuck.

I will read that link now!

Best regards

Alex

[ovirt-users] Hosted engine VM not coming up after Storage rebuild.

2023-10-12 Thread Sumit Basu
Hi,

We are running Ovirt 4.3 on IBM x3650, x3550 servers with our SAN on IBM
Midrange storage DS5300. All the storage domains are separate LUN's in the
storage with a dedicated LUN for the HostedEngine VM. The storage had a failure
due to a major power issue. One of the storage array's that have the storage
domains had to be re-constructed using IBM's StorageManager tool. After booting
the hosts, i can see all the storage domains as LUN's with the multipath -ll
from all the hosts, but on starting the hosted engine with #hosted-engine
--vm-start, and checking with --vm-status i get

"Engine status: {"reason": "failed liveliness check", "health": "bad",
"vm": "up", "detail": "Up"}'.

The global maintenance mode is enabled and i tried "hosted-engine --console" -
after logging in i checked the boot.log, i find

[ovirt-users] Re: VMs randomly pause due to unknown storage error, unable to resume

Hi,

Up until recently oVirt 4.5.4 has been running fine on our RHEL 8 hypervisors
with primarily (and a few appliances) Linux guests. We started to add Windows
2019 VMs to the cluster with the guest agent installed. They seem to run fine
at first, but some of the Windows VMs may randomly pause due to an unknown
storage error. The VM cannot be resumed through the UI or virsh. The paused VM
cannot be migrated to another Hypervisor. The GlusterFS storage volumes seem
fine. Resetting the VM seems to work, but eventually it'll become paused again.
The only thing that came to my mind is the virtual hard disks are thin
provisioned. Is a preallocated disk necessary for Windows VMs? Any helpful
hints on where to look next is greatly appreciated.

What error do you receive? Do you have discard enabled on the disks?
I would have a look at the vdsm/libvirt logs on the hypervisor to see if
it gives any additional information.

Thank you,

Jon
