[ovirt-users] GlusterFS Hyperconvergence

2015-07-06 Thread Tiemen Ruiten
Hello,

I'm in the planning stage of setting up a new oVirt cluster, where I would
prefer to use the local disks of the hypervisors for a GlusterFS storage
domain. What is the current recommendation (for version 3.5.x)?

I found this presentation which seems to suggest that it's possbile with
some caveats:
http://www.ovirt.org/images/6/6c/2015-ovirt-glusterfs-hyperconvergence.pdf

And a few open bugs:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1177791
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=115
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=113

What I can't find is current information on if this setup is already
possible with 3.5.x or it's better to wait for 3.6. Could someone enlighten
me?

What are recommendations (if they exist) for the type of Gluster volume

Would this setup already leverage libgfapi instead of FUSE?

 Hi,
most of the current work is focused in hyperconverged using hosted engine
 and
this includes the installation and a few other features such as not
 fencing hypervisors
 to avoid killing running bricks.
If you do not want to use hosted engine, then you should be able to
 create bricks
and manage them as a gluster volume which your setup should be able to
 work with.
If you do not use HA and/or fencing you should be mostly ok with this use
 case.

 Anything specific you're looking for?

This one doesn't have any relevant messages. Does this mean the changes are
not announced anywhere? I'm not talking about release changelogs, like
3.5.3 btw. I mean the equivalent of CentOS-announce or

You are right, the problem is with the file handlers.
You can increase the number of handlers in pool using the vdsm

/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/vdsm/config.py

The default value for 'process_pool_max_slots_per_domain' is 10,

can increase it by a bit, but not too much.

But I suspect the problem is in a larger scale, and this is only a
temporary relief for your system and this needs much more

proper fix.
could you please open a bug on RHEV/vdsm in bugzilla stating all
 of the
details of your setup and logs?

 Hello,

I ran into a nasty problem today when creating a new, cloned VM from a
template (one virtual 20 GBdisk) on our two-node oVirt cluster: on the node
where I started a VM creation job, load skyrocketed and some VMs stopped
responding until and after the job failed. Everything recovered without
intervention, but this obviously shouldn't happen. I have attached the
relevant vdsm log file. The button to create the VM was pressed around
11:17, the first error in the vdsm log is at 11:23:58.

The ISO domain is a gluster volume exposed via NFS, the storage domain for
the VM's is also a gluster volume. The underlying filesystem is ZFS.
The hypervisor nodes are full CentOS 6 installs.

I'm guessing the 'no free file handlers in pool' in the vdsm log file is
key here. What can I do to prevent this from happening again? Apart from
not creating new VMs of course :)

Re: [ovirt-users] [ANN] oVirt 3.5 GA Releases

2014-10-20 Thread Tiemen Ruiten
Hello,

Last week I upgraded to 3.5 and on the engine side everything went
absolutely fine. Now I'm wondering what to do about my hosts (full CentOS 6
installs). Is the upgrade something the engine takes care of when I set the
compatibility version to 3.5? Or should I install the ovirt-release35 rpm
and run yum update on all hosts?

Should I expect impact on running VM's, eg. from restarting vdsm?

Sandro, as I know you always like to hear things like this:
I just upgraded my oVirt 3.4.4 installation to 3.5 and everything went
really well (apart from some package siging / deps; but these are really
  not your issues).

I really like when someone report everything goes fine :-)

Tomorrow I start checking out the new stuff.

Thank you! I really appreciate the work you do.

The oVirt Project is pleased to announce the general availability of
its sixth formal release, oVirt 3.5, as of October 17, 2014.

oVirt is an open source alternative to VMware vSphere, and provides an
excellent KVM management interface for multi-node virtualization. oVirt is
available now for Fedora 19, Fedora 20, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5,
and CentOS 6.5 (or similar) and allow you to use Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7
 and
CentOS 7 too as node and for running Hosted Engine.

  New features include:

  Live Merge
  --
If an image has one or more snapshots, oVirt 3.5's merge command will
combine the data of one volume into another. Live merges can be performed
 with
data is pulled from one snapshot into another snapshot. The engine can
merge multiple disks at the same time and each merge can independently fail
 or
  succeed in each operation.
  Import Storage Domain

This latest release expands oVirt's feature of importing ISOs and
exporting storage domains to expand support for importing an existing data
 storage
domain. Based on information stored in the storage domain, oVirt can
revive entities such as disks, virtual machines, and templates in the setup
 of
any data center to which the storage domain is attached.

  Advanced Foreman Integration

oVirt 3.5 adds the capability to provision and add hypervisors to oVirt
from bare metal. Foreman is a complete lifecycle management tool for
 physical
and virtual servers. Through deep integration with configuration
management, DHCP, DNS, TFTP, and PXE-based unattended installations,
 Foreman manages
every stage of the lifecycle of your physical or virtual servers.
Integrating Foreman with oVirt helps add hypervisor hosts managed by
 Foreman to the
  oVirt engine.

Enhanced Authentication, Authorization and Accounting Support
  -
A new architecture has been built for oVirt 3.5's authentication,
authorization and accounting (AAA) system. The enhancements will provide a
 clear
separation of authentication from authorization and provide a developer
API to develop custom extensions for authentication and authorization.

  New PatternFly Interface

oVirt 3.5 will have a new look and feel, using PatternFly, the open
interface project. The new look and feel aims to maintain the colors and
 spirit
associated with oVirt, while updating it with a new, modern, sleek, and
minimal look. The minimal design allows complex screens to look cleaner and
airier, and lets the user focus on the data and the tasks by removing
 all extraneous visual elements.

  Advanced Scheduling with Optaplanner

The Optaplanner is a new service that takes a snapshot of a cluster (a
list of hosts and VMs) and computes an optimized VM-to-Host assignment
solution. Optimization will is done on per Cluster basis. The
administrator can use this information as a hint to tweak the cluster to
 better utilize
  resources.

This release of oVirt also includes numerous bug fixes. See the release
notes [1] for a complete list of the new features and bugs fixed.

A new repository has been created and will be automatically enabled by
 installing / upgrading ovirt-release35 package.
See release notes page for further instructions about install / upgrade.

A new oVirt Live iso is also available [2] and a new oVirt Node iso
 will be available soon.

Just as a side note, the ovirt-guest-tools-setup.exe can be copied to any

The installer doesn't copies any files from the CD's bin directory etc.,

The sole purpose of these files on the CD is for user's convenience, to

[ovirt-users] gluster split-brain on vm images volume

2014-08-02 Thread Tiemen Ruiten
Hello,

I have an oVirt environment backed by a two-node Gluster-cluster.
Yesterday I decided to upgrade to from GlusterFS 3.5.1 to 3.5.2, but
that caused the gluster daemon to stop and now I have several lines like
this in my log for the volume that hosts the VM images, called vmimage:

[2014-08-02 12:56:20.994767] E
[afr-self-heal-common.c:233:afr_sh_print_split_brain_log]
0-vmimage-replicate-0: Unable to self-heal contents of
'f09c211d-eb49-4715-8031-85a5a8f39f18' (possible split-brain). Please
delete the file from all but the preferred subvolume.- Pending matrix:
[ [ 0 408 ] [ 180 0 ] ]

What I would like to do is the following, since I'm not 100% happy
anyway with how the volume is setup:

- Stop VDSM on the oVirt hosts / unmount the volume
- Stop the current vmimage volume and rename it
- Create a new vmimage volume
- Copy the images from one of the nodes
- Start the volume and let it sync
- Restart VDSM / mount the volume

Is this going to work? Or is there critical metadata that will not be
transferred with these steps?

I tried that this week and it seems like SCSI3 persistent reservations
are not supported yet by the VirtIO-SCSI driver, therefore it's
impossible to set up shared storage. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

did you try an external (direct lun) disk with 'privileged scsi'
 commands?

I just tried that and Cluster Validation gives me this error for the
intended shared disk (direct lun, attached to two VM's, shareable,
privileged scsi):

Disk bus does not support clustering. The required inquiry data (SCSI
page 83h VPD descriptor) was reported as not being supported.

In the report, the VPD Page 83h identifier is listed as Unknown.

This seems to be an issue outside of oVirt, stgt only supports this
field since version 1.0.46:
http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-stgt/msg04349.html
Since I'm running CentOS 6 on the machine that hosts the scsi targets
which has 1.0.25, if RedHat hasn't backported that feature, it's not
supported.

intended shared disk (direct lun, attached to two VM's, shareable,
 privileged scsi):

Disk bus does not support clustering. The required inquiry data (SCSI
page 83h VPD descriptor) was reported as not being supported.

In the report, the VPD Page 83h identifier is listed as Unknown.

This seems to be an issue outside of oVirt, stgt only supports this
 field since version 1.0.46:
 http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-stgt/msg04349.html
Since I'm running CentOS 6 on the machine that hosts the scsi targets
which has 1.0.25, if RedHat hasn't backported that feature, it's not
 supported.

Well I decided to give the newest stgt version a go (1.0.48) and the VPD
Identifier error is gone, but I still get errors when validating:

The port driver used by the disk does not support clustering. Disk bus
type does not support clustering.

So still a no.

Yes. I've done just that. Works great.

Caveat - there was a bug related to not setting the Guest Agent to
autostart (at least for Windows 2008 R2). I think that's been fixed
but don't know if the fix has been pushed to the latest ISO yet.
Workaround - go into Services and change it from Manual to Automatic.

Unfortunately, I get 'Unsupported Windows version' on Windows Server
2012 R2.

[ovirt-users] 3rd party qemu/libvirt rpms and ovirt

2014-07-08 Thread Tiemen Ruiten
Hello,

I'm trying to setup a new oVirt environment based on F19 hosts, but I'm
running into so many issues, that I'm thinking of switching 'back' to
CentOS. However I would lose the advanced features (libgfapi, live
snapshots etc.) that are enabled in the F19 libvirt/qemu/kvm packages.
So after some googling a came across Alexandar Evseev's repository with
all the newest virtualization rpms packaged for CentOS 6:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/aevseev/CentOS6/x86_64/

However, I can't find any information at all about the status of these
packages or any indication about stability. Is anyone familiar with this
repository and would it be possible to use these packages in an oVirt
environment?

Well yes, I thought of that. But my reasoning was that if I only upgrade
these specific packages, there is less difference and less potential for
issues. On the other hand, CentOS 7 is mostly based on Fedora 19, so it
could work...guess I can only find out by trying.

libgfapi is not enabled in vdsm until libvirt has proper support for
 snapshots.
for the other 'advanved features', you can use the .el6 rpm built in
 jenkins.ovirt.org
All right, that's useful information. Maybe I didn't get my terminology
right: I want to host my VM-images on a GlusterFS volume, on a separate
storage cluster. Will it be possible to create a GlusterFS storage
domain on a CentOS cluster that utilizes that? Or should I use the posix
storage domain and specify glusterfs as a type? Is there any difference
in performance, since libgfapi isn't enabled anyway?

bonding mode 4 which is the most natural choice, requires configuration of the
 switch ports for lacp.

Why is it the most natural choice? On
http://www.gluster.org/community/documentation/index.php/Network_Configuration_Techniques
mode 6 is recommended. My storage domain is type GlusterFS. Mode 6 is
not an option in the oVirt interface though.

Anyway, since the traffic seems to go out from the VM interface, through
the hypervisor bridge+bond and the switch and arrives at the
DHCP-server, could this really be an issue with LACP? What else can I try?

My oVirt version: 3.4.2-1.el6 (CentOS 6.5)
The hypervisor hosts run GlusterFS 3.5.0-3.fc19.(Fedora 19)
The two storage servers run GlusterFS 3.5.0-2.el6 (Centos 6.5)

So I am NOT using local storage of the hypervisor hosts for the
GlusterFS bricks.

What can I do to solve this error?

 Hello,

I've been struggling to set up an Ovirt cluster and am now bumping into
